Please keep in mind that this is my 1st ever fan fic and I only wrote it becuase Susan asked so nicely. Little does she know the maniac that has been unleashed . If for whatever reason one were to assign some underlying deeper meaning (which is NOT intended) please keep in mind that the incident is considered by some to be lucky - why?, I haven't a clue. In any case, Susan, I hope you don't mind the cheese. This story is only borrowing FK characters. They will return relativly unscathed to the PTB. Thx for the loan! Permission granted to archive the story on Mel Moser's great page. All others please seek my permission. adrimcm@hotmail.com The sound came without warning. In all his 800 years Nick had heard it on various occasions; to most, it's quiet presence led to certain unenviable torture and on this evening Nick was to be no exception. He glanced left and right - humanity pressed around him. The only accelerated hearts were not caused by the impending doom, rather they were those of children playing, and the couple ensconced behind a tree. They were all blissfully unaware of what was about to occur., they hadn't heard it yet, couldn't. Sourly Nick wished for their ignorance. Almost immediately he realized that his change of attitude had alerted Natalie that something was amiss. He sighed inwardly as he turned and prepared his words - she had a right to know. Nat had turned to face Nick, her mind raced as she took in his grimace; could it be that a walk in the park at dusk was too much? It couldn't be the remaining light - she'd seen him withstand brighter conditions. Maybe it was the beating hearts of those around them. If that was the case, well, too bad for him she thought and her face hardened slightly. Nick took in her expression and glumly laid to rest the idea that his vampiric speed might save them. The sound was coming closer he could hear the effects on people now "Nat" he began, "See those seagulls?" She glanced up at the twilight sky and saw the ghostly shapes of seagulls flying above the far side of the park, their undersides eerily illuminated by the park lights. "Yeah .. what about them?" she replied absolutely bewildered. This was the only time of day that the gulls looked beautiful to her. "It's nesting season" "What"? Was Nick trying to tell her something? This was hardly the time and place.. she hastily thought.. Well it could be, she amended. But Nick had never expressed much interest inthat direction ... and he was her patient... and he never said that he could... or might...or.... Nat's mind sputtered to grinding halt as she stopped and stared openly at Nick. Nick's face took on a pained air he whispered urgently. "Can't you hear it yet?, they're " "What are you talking abo " Natalie's bewildered interruption never finished because suddenly through the seagull cries she began to hear human voices raised in discontent she listened, they grew closer. So intent was she on trying to hear more clearly that she closed her eyes and didn't notice that Nick had raised the collar on his jacket and was struggling to do the same for her. Suddenly she heard it too. Her eyes flew open as she darted a glance upwards trying to avoid fate, careening the sky in beautiful disguise. It wasn't to be. SPLAT! SPLAT! Something warm trickled past her ear and a foul stench assailed her.......... Finis Adriana McM
