Be Careful What You Wish For (01/01) By Kim Kocak October 1999 ______________________1824_________________ The Fleur Family was highly respected and well known in the Toronto Community. So it wasn't a surprised to anyone that this year charity ball, the Fleur's would be honored. Joseph Fleur went to see if the carriage was ready while Elizabeth Fleur was saying goodbye to seven unhappy children. The oldest didn't understand why he couldn't go; not because it was a charity ball (a first for him) but it was Halloween and had to stay with the rest of the children the youngest of which was two years old.. "Mother, I can't understand why I can't go," pouted William. "Because you have to help the governess, plus you would be bored anyway," smiled Elizabeth. A little two year toddler grabbing Elizabeth's gown screaming. She looked down and picked him up. "There there little monkey. Be good for mommy." She gave him to the governess, he was fussing as always. "I hope he wouldn't give you a hard time... Mary. There's other servants if you need help," Elizabeth said. "I'm sure I'll be fine, Ma'am. The wee one wouldn't give me hard time would you?" replied Mary holding a very fussing toddler. "I know... but still if you need help just ask the other servants" "I'll be here to help" replied Daniel the second oldest. William just gave Daniel a sharp look. There's been bad blood between the two brothers and would increase in the future. Just then Joseph came in. Saying good-bye to the children, he and Elizabeth went to the charity ball. Couple of hours later, Mary told the servants to boiled some water so she can give the toddler a bath. The toddler loved baths and with his favorite toy was playing in the water. Suddenly an argument started between Daniel and William. Leaving the toddler alone, Mary went to see what the problem was. When she got back to the nursery, Mary found the toddler in water. Apparently, the toddler lost the toy he was playing and tried to get up. He then slipped and drowned. Mary just stood there unable to move or scream. Tears ran down her face. In a daze, she turned and went up to the fourth floor Going to the storage room, Mary found a rope. Feeling that she betrayed the family, she placed one end of the rope around the beam. The second end around her neck and then hung herself. With the dead weight, the rope snapped and the body went to the basement. ___________________________Present____________________________ Halloween. Tracy loved Halloween but this year thanks to her partner, she had couple of weeks of backlog of cases that needed to be done. "What can I do to Knight!" Tracy said out loud. "Stake him! No, too simple. Burn him! No, too messy." "What about just telling Knight to do his own work and dumped the paperwork on his desk!" said a voice behind her. "YEEEP......" screamed Tracy. Turning around, she saw Vachon. Vachon always loved to scare Tracy and in a way had a feeling that Tracy loved it anyway. "Vachon how many times do I have to tell you not to do that. One day, I'm going to stake you" "Yea, that will be the day Trace." laughed Vachon. "Anyway, Knight is working you too hard and it's time for a break even from all this. It's Halloween, the veil between the living and the dead has lifted. Anyway, we should be looking for ghosts." Tracy rolled her eyes "Speak for yourself, Vachon. Why don't you look at yourself in the mirror if you can find yourself. And second, this place already has a ghost" "Yea, I bet." "You don't believe me. You know Vachon, you're full of it." snapped Tracy. "You're not quite human yourself. A 500 year old vampire and *you* don't believe in ghosts?" Suddenly, there was a knock on the door. Thinking it was trick and treaters, Tracy opened the door and found nobody was there. Shutting the door, Tracy looked towards Vachon. "What's wrong Trace" "Nobody's there" "Are you sure? Maybe, kids are playing around. You know, it is Halloween." said Vachon. "Vachon, I'm telling you nobody is out there" Again there was a knock on the door. But before Tracy could reach it. Vachon stopped her. "I'll open the door this time." replied Vachon. They opened the door, and it was again empty. Walking out of the hall, Vachon turned and then saw it. A ghostly figure of a woman dressed up in the early 19th century. Vachon didn't say a word. It seemed that the figure was telling him something. Walking back inside, Vachon gave Tracy a hug. "I'm sorry, but I have to go Trace." And with that, he left. Confused, Tracy went out to the hallway. What on earth would make Vachon act like that to a point that would *scare* a vampire. Going back to her apartment, she decided it's time for Knight to do his share of work and tomorrow it would be the day. She closed up shop and went to bed, still wondering what Vachon saw. Meanwhile at the church, Vachon drank down couple bottles of the *special* vintage. He couldn't tell Tracy what he saw because not only did he saw the ghostly figure down the hallway, he saw something else... the future.... His death and Tracy's. finish.
