FOREVER IS OURS by Nightlady Part 1/6 Natalie grabbed the mail out of her box as she hurried out the door of her building on her way to work. As she walked to her parking space she casually glanced through her mail. Among the usual assortment of magazines, advertisements and bills was a cream colored envelope. Stopping, Natalie opened it. As she read the contents a smile spread slowly across her face. Grace looked up from her desk as Natalie entered the office. "My, my don't you look like the cat that swallowed the canary," she commented teasingly. It was nice to see Natalie looking so happy. "Do I?" asked Natalie. "Well I think I might be entitled. Guess who is going to be named Physician of the Year by the Ontario Medical Society?" "YOU! Oh my gosh! That's wonderful! When is the presentation?" "I don't know. I kind of stopped reading when I finished the part that said 'It is with great pleasure that we inform you that, do to your extraordinary achievements in your position of M.E. to the Toronto Metropolitan Police Department, you have been selected to receive the Physician of the Year award.'" Natalie laughed. "Let's see ... ah here it is. 'The award banquet and ball will take place in London, Ont. on Saturday, December 17th. The festivities will be held in the Grand ballroom of the Lamplighter Inn, beginning with a cocktail hour at 6:00 p.m., dinner from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m., followed by the presentation of the award and dancing until 2:00 a.m.'" "Good thing you're used to working nights. December 17, that only gives you two weeks to find a dress and arrange for time off." Grace said. "I hope you invite me to go with you when you shop. You need somebody to make you buy a dress that does you justice." "Excuse me?" Nat laughed. "What's wrong with how I dress?" "For work absolutely nothing, but I know you. Left to yourself you'll buy some nice, oh so practical outfit that my mom could wear. I'll make you get something that says 'not only am I brilliant, I'm gorgeous too'." Grace smiled at Nat. "Besides, I'll bet Det. Knight wouldn't object to seeing you in a dress like that." Nat shook her head and blushed. "Uh...I ... I'm not sure I'd ever have the opportunity to wear something that fancy around Nick." she shrugged. "Come on Nat" Grace said looking at her a bit sternly. "You are going to ask him to escort you to this? Aren't you?" "I don't know. Things between us are a bit complicated right now. Anyway, I had better get to work or I'll be an unemployed 'Physician of the Year.'" As she went on toward her own office she heard Grace mutter under her breath "So what else is new?" What indeed thought Nat. It seemed as if every time she and Nick took a step forward in their relationship something would happen to set them back two steps. Nat was still trying to figure out what had caused this latest bump between them. They'd spent a wonderful night at Nick's loft watching old movies and, as had happened in the past, she'd fallen asleep sometime during the third movie. She'd awaken on the couch the next day and as usual let herself out. When she saw Nick at work the following night she had been stunned by the coolness he showed her. Even now, over a week later, he was still keeping a distance between them. She wanted Nick to be with her when she was honored by the other doctors in the society, yet she didn't feel comfortable in asking him to go to London with her. She knew that he would probably do it to please her but that wasn't what she wanted. "I want him to care enough about me to want to be there with me," she said softly to herself. ******************************************************************************* Tracy Vetter looked up from the file she was reading as her partner entered the detectives' bull pen. She looked at Nicks' face trying to decide if he was in a better mood than he had been for the past week or so. 'Must be some sort of trouble between him and Nat' she mused. She had only worked with Nick for a few months, but she had quickly noted that Nick's moods and the state of his relationship with Nat mirrored one another. Of exactly what the relationship between the good looking detective and the attractive M.E. consisted, was something that Tracy had yet to determine. Kind of like my "relationship" with Vachon she thought with a silent sigh. Of course, at least Nick and Nat don't have the added complication of one of them being a vampire. That thought brought a small smile to Tracy's face. "Sorry I'm late," Nick said as he sat down at his desk. "I was visiting an old friend and lost track of the time." "No problem. Thank goodness things around here have been quiet. I've even gotten most of MY share of our paper work done. " Tracy looked pointedly at the stack of files on Nicks' desk. "Maybe you'll be as lucky with YOUR share." Nick groaned in mock despair. "I don't know. I think I might prefer a call to doing these" "Well, if you work really hard on them I might let you come with me when I run over to the Morgue to pick up the results of the lab tests on the Kent case." Tracy teased. Seeing the shadow that passed over Nick's face made her wish she hadn't. "Of course, you don't have to go if you don't want to," she quickly added. "No, I'll get started on these. There are probably some things I'll need from Nat in order to finish them," Nick answered with a sad smile. Besides, he thought, even if we're not getting along my need to at least see Nat is as strong as my need for blood. Nick knew that he was to blame for this latest coolness with Nat. He wanted her so badly that keeping the vampire under control when they were together was almost impossible. Just over a week ago, last time they had been alone at his loft, he had almost lost the battle. They'd been cuddling on the couch, watching an old movie, and Nat had fallen asleep in his arms. He'd sat there basking in the feel of her warm body, the scent of her hair and of her blood. Without thinking he had gently kissed her first on the forehead, then light as feathers on her eyes, the swell of her cheekbone, her lips and the curve of her throat. When she sighed softly in her sleep, Nick was startled to realize that his fangs had descended. He had frozen until, after several moments he had once again pushed the killer back inside himself. He had eased a still sleeping Natalie onto the couch and, after covering her with an afghan, all but fled upstairs with two bottles of blood wine. The rest of the night had been spent lying on top of his bed drinking and aching with both remorse and desire. Even now the memory of that night brought painful shame to him 'If I ever harm her I'll destroy myself,' Nick vowed silently to himself. Since that night he had been careful not to put Natalie in danger. He knew that she was both confused and hurt by his sudden coolness. He had made certain that he wasn't alone with her here at work and had been staying with La Croix during days in order to avoid her at the loft. He knew that he owed her an explanation for his behavior, but he feared that she would be horrified by his actions. ******************************************************************************* Send comments to Marchell Cheeseman aka Nightlady at cstar@pdq.net Nick & Nat Packer, closet Dark Knightie with some Cousin tendencies. I am interested in feedback. Disclaimers in part 1 FOREVER IS OURS by Nightlady PART 2/6 "Well, at least we had a chance to catch up on most of the paperwork," Tracy said to Nick as they entered the Medical Examiners building. "Capt. Reese is going to be thrilled to have all of those files completed." Nick nodded in agreement as he walked beside Tracy. Nick smiled at the woman seated at the desk in front of them as he greeted her. "Hello, Grace. How are things around here tonight?" Grace looked up from her work. "Oh, hi Nick, Tracy. The operative word around here is quiet," she said smiling at both of them. "Gives us a chance to catch up on our files. Can I help you or do you need to see Dr. Lambert?" Grace wished that Nat had not asked her to say nothing about the award to Nick. "We're just here for copies of the test results on these cases," Tracy answered, handing Grace a paper with a list of names on it. "What's Natalie doing? Maybe we'll say hello if she's not real busy," she continued glancing sideways at Nick. "I think she's doing a hospital post right now, but you can go on back. I'll pull these files and bring them back to you when they're ready." Grace began to type in her request on her computer. "By the way, Tracy, are we still on for next Thursday?" "Yes, and I am looking forward to it." Tracy waved as she started down the hall followed by Nick. "I didn't know you and Grace were such good friends," Nick remarked as they walked. Tracy laughed. "This is the first time we're doing anything together. I think she's nice and we have some stuff we want to talk about." Tracy did not add that just what was going on between her partner and Grace's boss was going to be the main topic of conversation. Before Nick could inquire further, they reached the door to the autopsy room. Nick steeled himself, knowing that his first impulse would be to take Nat in his arms. 'That would sure give Tracy and Grace something to talk about,' he thought wryly. Natalie looked up from the body she was working on as they entered. Neither Nick nor Tracy missed the quickly hidden look of sorrow and pain that passed over her face before she smiled and greeted them. "Did I miss a call or did you just come here because you don't think you've been to work if you haven't made at least one trip to the morgue?" she joked. When Nick didn't reply, Tracy said, "Neither, we came by to pick up some test results so we can close some of our files. Grace said it would be okay if we stopped in an said hi while she got them ready for us." She glanced a Nick who gave a nod of agreement never taking his eyes from Nat. 'He looks like a starving man outside a grocery,' Tracy thought. "Well it's always good to see you," Nat said to Tracy. She could feel Nick's eyes on her. Maybe she SHOULD mention the award to them. Just as she was starting to speak, Nick interrupted her. "Obviously you're busy. Come on Tracy. Grace should have those results printed out by now and we can finish up the files and maybe call it a night. See you, Nat." He turned and left hurriedly. Just outside the door he stopped and took several deep breaths. He had had to get out of there. The urge to hold Natalie, instead of lessening seemed to get stronger every time he saw her. He knew that Tracy must think that he was incredibly rude, but he couldn't help that. 'Maybe La Croix is right,' Nick thought. 'Perhaps it would be better if I just moved on, but, I don't think I could stand never seeing her again.' Inside he heard Tracy say plaintively "Nat...." and Nat's brisk reply, "It's all right Tracy, I've got work to do." Nick could hear the barely hidden tears in Nat's voice and the sound burned him like the sun. Tracy came out and gave Nick a look of anger and disbelief. She started to say something then changed her mind and shaking her head in disgust walked off down the hall leaving Nick to follow. ******************************************************************************* "I swear I was ready to haul off and slug him! How can someone so smart be so dense. I thought Natalie Lambert was going to burst into tears right then and there." "Easy, Tracy. Easy," Vachon soothed. "You said yourself that you don't know exactly what Knight's relationship with Dr. Lambert is. Maybe they're not a close as you thought." Vachon had seen Knight at the Raven several times over the past week. Urs had told him that Knight had been staying there with La Croix for over a week, but she didn't know why. Tracy calmed somewhat. "I don't care. It still wasn't necessary for Nick to be rude to her like that." She paused. "I mean look at us, Vachon. We get along. It's not like Nick and Nat have to cope with one of them being a vampire like we do." Vachon carefully kept his expression neutral. 'Oh Tracy,' he thought. 'If only you knew how hard it is for me not to let the vampire out when I'm around you. I know my feelings for you are nowhere near as strong as Knights' for her.' Knight's feeling for Dr. Lambert was well known throughout the vampire community in Toronto. Vachon had heard that, just the year before, Knight had killed another vampire that had tried to attack her. Aloud he said, "I'm sure you're right, but I DON'T think it would be wise to get into an argument with your partner because you don't approve of how he handles his personal life." "No, I guess it is really none of my business. But Vachon, if you could see them together...I've never seen two people who were anymore right for one another." Tracy went over to him. "Sorry, I didn't mean to come here and dump on you." Hugging her gently he said, "Don't worry about it. Let me show you that new book I was telling you about." He led her across the room. (Thursday night -- One week later) Tracy was enjoying her evening out with Grace. They had decided to eat at a small Italian restaurant. They had finished their appetizers and were awaiting their main courses. So far they had spent the time learning a bit more about each other. Tracy could tell however, that Grace was as eager to discuss Nick and Nat as she was. After the waitress brought their meal, they began exchanging information. "I certainly do remember when Nick started here," Grace said. "And I remember thinking that it sure hadn't taken him long to become friends with Nat. At first, it seemed like they were being real careful to keep it all strictly professional. If you kept your eyes open though, you'd see the way they looked at each other when they thought no one was watching." "Well, I caught on from that first awful night at the plane crash that they seemed to be a bit more than 'casual friends'." Tracy replied. "If you had seen the look on their faces when they found each other at the crash site...." She paused, then added, "And it sure didn't take long for me to figure out that the mood of my partner depended heavily on how he was getting along with the M.E.. What I DON'T understand is why in the world they don't just admit that they're both nuts about one another and be done with it!" "Me either," Grace chuckled. "Of course I really don't know much about Nick. I mean, I know he's a good cop and he seems like a really nice guy, but I've never heard him talk about any of his family, or school friends or anything like that. " Grace looked at Tracy with questioning eyes. "Sorry, I haven't the slightest idea of his background," Tracy said shaking her head. "You're right though about him never talking about his past. Nick, well Nick just seems to have this aura that says 'I will let you come only so close'. Maybe it's just because I've only been his partner for a short time." "No Tracy. I remember Don Schanke saying, not too long before he died, that he'd been partners with Nick for almost five years and he still didn't know who Nick really was." Grace ate for a few moments then added, "If you want to know the truth, I think that Nat is the only one who even has a clue as to Nick and I don't know if she knows everything. As to what you said earlier about Nick's mood, let me tell you that works both ways." "Have you got any idea of what the problem between them is this time?" Tracy asked. "Cause, I've got to tell you, I'm starting to dread going into work! Nick is irritable, and when he isn't snapping about something he's moping. I frankly don't know if I can stand much more of his behavior." "Nat hasn't snapped at anyone but I almost wish she would. She is just so sad." Grace said softly. "She should be on top of the world right now. Winning that award and..." "What award?" "Didn't she tell you? She's been named physician of the year by the Ontario Medical Society! As a matter of fact, Saturday afternoon I'm going shopping with her for a dress to wear to the presentation." "I had no idea at all," Tracy said thinking. "When did she find out about this? Maybe she wanted Nick to escort her and he turned her down and that's what all this is about." "I wish that WERE the case. No, she only found out last Thursday and you know that this latest incident started before then." Grace said sadly. "She was so happy when she came in that night. Then I made the mistake of assuming that she would tell Nick and he would be escorting her. Tracy, it was terrible. As soon as I mentioned his name she just wilted. As a matter of fact she made me promise that I wouldn't say a word to Nick about the award." Grace paused. "She didn't say that I couldn't tell his partner though.." "And I've never promised not to tell MY partner." Tracy said slyly. "When and where did you say this was going to take place?" Grace reached into her purse and handed Tracy a sheet of paper. "I just happen to have all the details right here," she said grinning. "Oh, and by the way, I insisted on going with her to shop. I promise you I will not let her pick out some nice, safe dress. I think it's time that Nat remembers that she is still young and pretty." Tracy was all smiles now too. "Great! If those two don't have the common sense to see that they're made for each other we'll just have to give them a little nudge. Let's see. I'm off today and Sunday and Nick's off on Friday and Saturday. Okay, I start working on him first thing Monday night." PG-13 Please let me know what you think. Disclaimers in part 1 FOREVER IS OURS by Nightlady Part 3/6 (Monday night) "KNIGHT! IN MY OFFICE!" Capt. Reese shouted from the doorway. "Not you Vetter, just your sweet tempered partner" Tracy sat back down and watched as Nick, jaw tightly clinched disappeared into Reese's office. She knew from Miller that in the middle of last night's shift Nick had stormed into the office and checked out without a word to anyone. Grace had called late this afternoon and told Tracy what had preceded that event. Nick had gone over to the morgue to get details on a young male found dead earlier that night. Grace had offered to go collect the report from Nat and Nick had walked along with her. They had entered Nat's office just in time to see Det. Banks from the 79th make a pass at Nat. According to Grace, Nat never had a chance to respond, before Nick had grabbed Banks away from her and punched him, knocking Banks across the room. Grace swore that the only thing that stopped Nick from killing Banks was Natalie's scream for Nick to stop. Nick had stopped. Then, he had rushed from the room leaving Banks bleeding on the floor, Natalie in tears and Grace frightened half to death. "Tracy," Grace had said. "I have never seen anyone as angry as Nick was. I tell you for a moment I could have sworn his eyes were glowing red!" "Knight, what the HELL did you think you were doing yesterday!" Reese roared. He stopped and took several deep breaths. "Listen," he said more calmly, "I know you and Dr. Lambert are friends, but that does not give you the right to beat up somebody because you don't like the way he talked to her! Do you realize that you broke Banks' jaw? IA is going to go after you for this and I hope that you get through it in one piece." Reese looked at Nick. "Do you have any sort of explanation that would make sense of your actions?" he inquired. "No Capt.," Nick said aloud. 'I don't think that telling IA I was so jealous of him that I lost control of the vampire in me would be an explanation they'd accept,' he thought to himself. "I guess I just lost it for a moment," he continued aloud. Reese looked at Nick and thought that he had seldom seen anyone who looked as unhappy, with the possible exception of Dr. Lambert last night. "Well, for now pending the findings of the investigation you are on indefinite suspension with out pay. Damn it Nick, you're one of my best detectives and I don't mind telling you that I am REAL unhappy about this," Reese said sadly. "You might make it through okay though. Dr. Lambert has filed a complaint with IA over Banks actions and it seems like she isn't the only one he has accosted," he added. "I understand Capt. I really am sorry to have caused you this embarrassment. I'll book off and go home." Tracy had been keeping an eye on Reese's door. When Nick came out, she got up and walked over to him. "You okay?" she asked softly. Nick turned to her with pain clearly visible in his eyes and nodded then shook his head negatively. "Tracy, would you do me a favor?" he asked. "Sure" "Would you tell Natalie that I'm sorry about what happened last night?" Nick said. 'And that I love her and miss her and want her so badly that I think I may lose my mind,' he thought to himself. 'I know how badly I've hurt her and I don't know how to apologize...or even if I should try when the result of resuming our relationship might well be her death.' Tracy nodded and asked "What's going to happen?" "Well, for now, I'm on suspension while IA investigates. So I guess you're going to be on your own for at least a week or two." Nick gently squeezed her shoulder. "Don't worry." "I'll try not to. Nick, I know this probably is not a real good time, but could I meet you somewhere later on -- just for a few minutes?" "Why not. You can let me know what is happening with our cases." Tracy watched as Nick took his name off the duty roster and walked out of the office. "At least this way if I can talk him into going to London for the award banquet there won't be a problem with getting time off," she murmured picking up the phone. "Right now, maybe I should have a little talk with Daddy." ******************************************************************************* Nick sat alone in his loft staring at the shifting flames in the fireplace. A half full bottle of blood wine sat beside him on the table. 'You really made a fool of yourself last night,' he thought shaking his head. He knew he had acted like a fool the night before and that there would be a price to pay for it. He only hoped that it wouldn't be too high. Even though La Croix had spent the past two weeks urging him to move on, Nick knew that he could not. The thought of never again seeing Nat or hearing her voice was unbearable. During the past two weeks, he had spent the final few minutes before dawn standing across the street from Nat's apartment. He had listened to her breathing. On more than on occasion, she had come to the window and looked out. Each time, it had taken all of his control not to go to her. Only his fear of her rejection had kept him motionless. There HAD to be a solution. He readily admitted to himself that he loved Nat. In 800 years of existence, he had never loved ANYONE as much as he loved her. When she was away from him it felt as if a part of his very being was missing. She was he realized, the most important thing in his life. He had told Nat that he was unwilling to risk her life by making love with her. Now, however, he wondered if he had been hasty in making that decision. Perhaps he and Nat should discuss the possibility of attempting it. The memory of Alyssa and her death made him shudder, but he was far more experienced than he had been then. If he took too much, even though he hated the idea of condemning her to his eternal darkness, he could try to bring Nat across. In the end he knew from his own crossing, the final decision would be Nat's. The most he could do would be to provide the option to her and attempt to call her back. He knew Nat would be off work on Saturday and he resolved to talk to her then. 'If yesterday hasn't caused her to completely wash her hands of me. Not that I would blame her if she did.' he brooded as he lifted the bottle to his lips and drank deeply. ******************************************************************************* Nat stood looking into the darkness outside her bedroom window. Her eyes searched the shadows across the street in vain. During the past two weeks she had, on several occasions, had the feeling that Nick had been standing hidden in them. She had never been able to see clearly enough to be certain if he was there. When she got back from her interview with IA, Nat had called Grace and learned that Nick was on an indefinite suspension. She remembered the way he had looked yesterday. She had been afraid that he was going to kill Banks, but when she had screamed to him to stop he had. 'Always my knight in shining armor,' she thought. When he had run out of her office, she had gone after him calling his name, but he had already vanished from sight. She had seen to it that Banks received medical care. Then, after Capt. Reese and the others had left, she had collapsed in Grace's arms and cried. She knew Grace was worried about her and she had to admit that she was a little worried herself. Since that night at Nick's loft Nat hadn't really slept. She had spent sleepless days trying to figure out what had happened. She knew Nick had been holding her in his arms when she had fallen asleep that night. Nat hugged herself as she recalled how content she always felt in his arms. She had come to the conclusion that, while she slept in his arms, Nick must have let his control slip for a moment. His fear of harming her would explain his sudden avoidance of her. She knew that one of his greatest fears was that he would kill her or, in his mind even worse, bring her across to his world of darkness. Nat had always trusted Nick, even when he doubted his ability to keep the vampire under control. From the time they had first really met, on the night after she first saw him in the morgue, she had never been concerned by the thought that he might harm her. As she had fallen in love with him, he came to represent a safe haven. Even though she knew that she might be in danger from the Enforcers, she never had any fear when she was with him. Her only fear was of not being with him. It didn't matter to her anymore if it was with him as a mortal or her as a vampire. Being together was all that she wanted. 'Oh, Nick,' she breathed, 'When you're with me I'm NEVER in darkness.' As she got out, she saw Nick walk across the street toward her. She looked at her watch It was 4 a.m. She had called Nick before leaving the office and they had agreed to meet here, as it was only a few blocks from Tracy's apartment. "Did you get a chance to talk to Nat?" Nick asked as soon as he reached Tracy. "Sorry, Nick. She had a meeting with IA and then went home." Tracy responded lightly touching his arm. "I DID talk to Grace though. Come on. Let's get out of this cold and I'll tell you what she said." They entered the diner and found a booth. Tracy ordered hot tea, but Nick just shook his head when the waitress asked if he wanted anything. "First," Tracy said, "the general consensus around the station is that Det. Banks is a real jerk who finally got what he deserved. I happened to talk to my father, and according to him you'll probably have to finish this weeks' suspension and receive a letter of reprimand in your file." "Your father 'just happened' to call tonight?" Nick looked at her with raised eyebrows. "Okay, okay so I called him," Tracy said looking sheepish. "But I swear Nick, I didn't ask him to pull any strings or anything like that. I just asked him what he knew about the investigation. You should be pleased to know that your reputation is far and away superior to Banks'. When you add Natalie's statement showing you might have had reason to believe she was being assaulted, things look pretty good." Nick gave her a small smile. "Thanks, Tracy." He swallowed, then softly asked, "What did Grace have to say?" Tracy smiled back. "I apologized to Grace for you too. She says Natalie is all right, or at least as all right as she's been for the past couple of weeks." Tracy watched as Nick took in this information. "Did Natalie tell you she's been named Physician of the Year by the provincial medical society? The award presentation is this Saturday." Nick looked at Tracy with a mixture of surprise and pride on his face. After a few seconds, however, his expression saddened. "No, we...we haven't seen much of each other lately." Tracy reached across the table and laid her hand over Nick's. "I know. Listen...I don't know what happened between the two of you and I'm not asking you to tell me. I DO KNOW that you're both MISERABLE because of it." When Nick started to open his mouth she quickly continued. "It hasn't been hard to notice. Nick if you care about Nat as much as you seem to, go to the presentation. According to Grace, Nat wants you to be there with her. She hasn't said anything about it to you because of whatever is going on between the two of you. Nat doesn't want you to think that she's trying to force you into something. She's afraid that you'll reject her if she asks you." Tracy smiled at Nick and squeezed his hand. "Nat deserves to have someone who cares about her at this. So what's it going to be Nick? Are you going to be there with her or not? Please, Nick, don't let your male pride keep the two of you apart." "I want to be with her, but what if Grace is wrong? What if my being there ruins the evening for her? I know I've hurt her. After what I pulled last night, I'm not sure she'll even talk to me." Nick looked at Tracy and she could see the faint hope that was in his eyes. "Nick, what does she have to do? Take out an ad or put up a billboard that says she loves you? All anyone has to do is see the two of you together. You are made for each other." Nick suddenly squeezed Tracy's hand. "I don't suppose that you would happen know where the presentation is being held?" he asked. Grinning broadly Tracy reached into her purse. "I just happen to have all the information right here." Nick looked at the paper. "London, huh? I'll have to miss the dinner but I should be able to get there in time to make the presentation and the dance." He suddenly looked worried. "Tracy, should I tell her I'll be there?" Tracy considered the question. "You could, but I bet it would be a lot more fun to just surprise her." She laughed. 'And if the dress she's wearing looks half as good on her as Grace says it does, you may be in for a bit of a surprise yourself Nicholas B. Knight' she thought. " I happen to know that she's planning on driving over Saturday afternoon. I also know that Air Canada flight 1221 leaves here at 6:45 p.m. and arrives in London at 7:25 p.m. If things go well, you can catch a ride back with Nat." (Saturday Night) "Nat pulled her car into the parking area at the Lamplighter Inn and glanced at her watch. It was just after 5pm. The 106 mile (170 km) drive from Toronto had taken just over one and half hours. She carefully removed the garment bag that held her new dress and entered the inn in search of the hospitality suite where she would change for the presentation. Some twenty minutes later Nat stood in front of a full length mirror. She felt like she was looking at a stranger. 'But not an all together bad looking stranger' she mused. The dress was of velvet, almost the color of the blood wine that Nick drank. The neckline was off the shoulder with long fitted sleeves and plunging both in front and back. The princess style bodice outlined every curve of her body. She had swept her hair up off of her neck into a sophisticated twist. She wore delicate gold hoop earrings and the heavy gold locket that Nick had given her rested in the hollow between her breasts,. Nat reached up and gently clasped the locket. She closed her eyes and thought 'I wish you were here Nick. We were so happy when you gave me this.' With a sigh Nat picked up her small evening bag and headed to the ballroom. Once at the ballroom, Nat took a deep breath and, although she felt more like weeping, fixed a smile on her face. Even though the cocktail hour wouldn't officially start for twenty minutes the room was already full of people. Through the floor to ceiling windows the darkness of the winter night was visible. As she walked into the room, Nat was aware that more than one man turned their head to watch her go by. 'I wonder what Nick would think of me in this dress. I hope it is not too daring.' she worried. She saw Dr. Paul Michals, the current president of the Ont. Med. Society, approaching her. "Dr. Lambert, how lovely you look tonight." he greeted her. He was a distinguished gentleman in his mid - sixties. "Thank you Dr. Michals. I have to confess I feel a little uneasy in this dress. I usually wear something a bit less revealing." "Well, you look lovely." He smiled at her warmly. "At least half the men here have already decided you are, by far, the best looking honoree we've ever had." He took her arm and led her over to the bar. "May I offer you a drink?" he inquired. "Yes, thank you. A glass of white wine, please." Nat was feeling more at ease. For the rest of that hour she mingled with the other guests. She accepted their congratulations on winning the award. Gradually, she began to relax. All the time, her eyes scanned the room looking for the one face she knew wouldn't be there. 'It's my own fault,' she thought. 'I'm the one who didn't tell him about this and insisted that Grace shouldn't tell him.' She smiled as an idea came to her. "Excuse me for just a moment. I have to make a quick phone call." Nat left the small group of people with whom she had been standing. Hurrying from the ballroom, she went to the bank of telephones in the hotel lobby. Swiftly, she dialed Nick's home number. She listened to the recording on his machine and at the beep she spoke. "Nick, it's me, if you're there please pick up the phone." She paused for a moment waiting and then continued. "I'll be back in Toronto no later than 4:00 a.m. Please, meet me at my place I have to talk with you." her voice breaking on the last words. "Please, Nick." She slowly hung up the phone and went back to the ballroom. "My pleasure I assure you," Tracy replied with a grin. "You look great by the way. You should wear a tux more often." Nick laughed, "I can just see me at a crime scene in one of these." He sat back in the seat. He had been nervously fidgeting ever since Tracy had picked him at his loft up a few minutes after sunset. He looked over at her. "I hope this goes well. I wouldn't blame Nat if she told me to get lost." "She won't" Tracy assured him. "I know she is going to be thrilled when she sees you. Well, here we are! Have a great time and give Nat a hug for me." "I will," Nick said. Just before he got out of the car he leaned over and kissed Tracy on the cheek. "You don't know how much I hope you're right." Tracy watched as Nick disappeared into the airport. "I know I'm right," she said quietly. "I know it" The flight arrived in London on schedule and Nick caught a cab to the Lamplighter Inn. Although he could easily use his powers to make the trip, somehow he wanted to do it the "mortal" way. 'Face it, as nervous as I am I'd probably manage to be the first vampire to get lost if I tried to fly.' Nick entered the building and headed for the ballroom. Using his powers he could hear a man's voice saying, "It is with great pleasure that I now present to you the winner of this years award -- Dr. Natalie Lambert." As Nick entered the ballroom, he looked around. He spotted a small shadowy recess near the door. He stepped into the shadow and looked toward the dais where the podium stood. He inhaled sharply as his eyes found Nat. He had never seen her look so beautiful. His heart leapt a little as he noticed the locket, HIS locket around her neck. The sight of it released a small hope that maybe, just maybe she would be glad to see him. Natalie shook hands with Dr. Michals and took the plaque with her name on it from him. She then turned to the assembled guests and began her thank you speech. Looking out into the darkened ballroom, she suddenly had the same feeling of being watched that she had been experiencing over the past two weeks. Continuing with her speech she searched the sea of faces before her. She caught a movement near the doorway and in that moment she was certain that Nick was there. She quickly finished her speech and left the podium to generous applause. As the other diners began leaving their seats, to dance or visit with friends, Natalie hurried toward the door. Nick realized that, somehow, Nat knew he was here. He watched as she made her way across the room toward him. When she was a few feet away he stepped into the light where she could see him. Nat stopped and looked at him. He could hear her heart as it beat rapidly. As he looked at her he hoped she could see all of the love he felt for her. Tears shone in her eyes as a radiant smile spread across her face. Voice breaking with emotion, she said his name and then she was in his arms. They stood there, oblivious to everyone around them. Nat pressed her face against Nick's chest. He held her against him caressing her neck and shoulders. He could feel her body as she clung to him. His face was against her hair and he luxuriated in the feel and scent of her. "I love you, Nat." he murmured to her as he gently kissed her hair. "I know I've hurt you. I probably don't have haven't the right to love you, but I do." Nat's arms were around him and she tightened her hug as he spoke. She wanted to remain wrapped in his arms, feeling his body against hers forever. She tilted her head to look into his blue eyes. Raising one hand, she touched his face. Nick closed his eyes and turned his head so that he could kiss her palm. Her touch sent a warmth through him that he had not known in 800 years. The small sound of pleasure she made increased his need for her. When he gazed back at her, Nat could see the gold flecks in his eyes as he struggled for control. Reluctantly, she moved so that they no longer pressed against one another. Nick would not release her entirely, and kept his arm around her shoulder. Nat realized that Dr. Michals was standing a few feet from them with a questioning expression on his face. Now he approached, clearly waiting to be introduced. A quick glance at Nick showed her that the gold had faded from his eyes and the gentle squeeze he gave her further reassured her. "Dr. Michals," she said, "May I introduce Det. Nicholas Knight of the Toronto Metropolitan Police. Nick, this is Dr. Paul Michals - President of the Ont. Med. Soc." She watched as they shook hands and exchanged greetings. "Did you just arrive Det. Knight? If you haven't eaten, I'm sure it would be possible to get a meal for you." Michals offered. "Thank you, but that won't be necessary. I ate before I left Toronto. I knew I wouldn't be able to get here in time for the dinner. I had to work." "Well then, glad you could make it in time for the dance. Dr. Lambert, Det. Knight I hope you have a very pleasant evening." Michals said smiling. When he had left, Nat turned to Nick. "We need to have a long talk." she said quietly. "We can leave now if you'd like..." Nick shook his head. "Not just yet. This is your night. Right now I want to dance with the most beautiful woman I have ever known." He gently kissed her mouth. "We DO need have to have a long talk, but it can wait for a few more hours." He led her toward the dance floor. "Yes, I guess it can. Nick, I've MISSED YOU SO MUCH. I wanted you here so badly...how DIDyou get here?" "You can thank Tracy, Air Canada and a cabdriver for that." "WHAT?" "Tracy told me about the award. She found out from Grace." Nat rolled her eyes and chuckled. "I should have known Grace wouldn't keep quiet." 'Thank goodness!' she thought. "Once, I knew I had to come." "Okay, but Air Canada and a CAB?!" Nick shrugged. "Yeah...well...I'm going to have to hitch a ride back to Toronto with you. I only bought a one-way ticket." Nat laughed, "Fine, but YOU have to drive." Nick smiled back. "Your wishes are my commands." he said as they reached the dance floor. There he gathered her into his arms as they glided into a slow waltz. (1:00 a.m.) "Are you sure you want to leave?" Nick asked. Natalie nodded. Together they went to the hospitality suite and collected Nat's things. In a few minutes they were in her car, headed back to Toronto. They rode in companionable silence and Nat dozed for most of the trip. Just after 2:30 a.m., Nick parked the car outside his loft. They rode up in the elevator and it wasn't until they were seated on the couch in front of the fire that Natalie spoke. 'Nick, what happened that night? I need to know." Nat saw the brief look of pain that crossed Nick's face. She waited until he was ready to speak. "I let my control slip. I almost bit you." He watched her face waiting for the horror he was certain he would see there. Instead he saw calm acceptance. "Why didn't you tell me?" "I didn't know how. I thought that the best thing to do was to try and put some distance between us. I told you once that my love could be deadly to you. I don't want to be the cause of your death. I couldn't survive if that happened" Nat reached over and took his hand in hers. "I kind of guessed that might be what it was." She looked deeply into his eyes. I've known from the start the risk I was taking just being around you, yet I have never been afraid of you." Seeing his skeptical look she chuckled. "Okay, I admit that when you sat up in the morgue that first night you scared me half to death." She sobered as she continued. "Nick, these past few weeks I've done a lot of thinking about us and our relationship. I've weighed all of the pros and cons and I've reached a decision. I want to make love with you no matter what the risks. Lowering her eyes she lifted his hand to her lips and kissed it. Nick put his hand under her chin and gently raised her face so that she looked into his eyes. "What if I can't stop...if I take too much? Are you willing to risk that?" Nat smiled, love for him shining in her eyes. "Yes, I am." "I don't know if I can bring you across. I can't bear the thought of condemning you to this eternal darkness. "I want to be with you. I don't care how. If you take too much, then TRY to bring me across." Nick started to speak but Nat placed her hand over his lips. "Nick please understand this. If you bring me across, I won't be in darkness. So long as I'm with you my existence is filled with light." END PART 5 WARNING: Part 6 is ADULT in content. I would like to know what you think of it. Disclaimers in part 1 FOREVER IS OURS by Nightlady Part6/6 Nick cradled her against his chest. Then he slowly began kissing her. When his lips reached her mouth the intensity of her response inflamed his passion even more. His hands sought her breasts even as she stroked his arms and back. Lifting her in his arms he carried her up the stairs. In the bedroom Nick set her on her feet. He released her hair from the twist so that fell in a soft, full cloud about her shoulders. Slipping off her dress, he gently cupped her breasts in his hands. Nat gave a moan of pleasure and swiftly unbuttoned his shirt. As it fell to the floor she traced the muscles in his back and chest first with her fingers and then with her lips and tongue. Reaching behind her he unfastened her bra. He bent his head as he kissed her breasts, teasing the nipples with his tongue. He could hear the increased speed of her heartbeat as she responded to him. He shivered with want as she undid his trousers and slipped her hand inside to touch him. The heat of her body kindled an answering heat within him. In response, he slid the lacy garter belt she wore over her hips. Both now naked, he held her and managed to whisper, "I'll stop now if you're having any second thoughts about this." She replied by kissing him deeply on the mouth while she stroked his groin with her hand. He picked her up and laid her on the bed. As he lay down beside her, she pulled him to her. She ran her hands along his thighs and buttocks kissing him all the while. He kissed her breasts and neck. She sought his mouth and ran her tongue along his teeth. She looked as his eyes now golden with desire and felt his fangs as they descended. "I love you Nicholas," she whispered smiling. Unable to resist the need for her any longer, he slid between her open legs and she reached down and guided him into her. He began to move, slowly at first, then faster and she met his thrusts with her own. As she felt her self ready to explode with joy and pleasure, she pulled his mouth to her neck. She felt the sudden sharpness of his fangs as they sought and found the vein. When he began to drink, she felt the love and need he had for her. "I love you, I love you," she whispered as waves of pleasure poured over her. She never dreamed that anyone could experience this much pleasure. "I love you," she whispered even as she sank into blackness. With the first taste of her blood, Nicholas felt his own release. He knew in an instant that her love for him was stronger than anything he had ever experienced. It filled him and he met it with his own love. Never, with Janette nor any of the other lovers he had had in his 800 years of existence, had he felt anything like this. He heard her whisper and it added to his pleasure. When she lost consciousness, he felt her go limp in his arms. He lifted his mouth from her neck. She lay unmoving with her eyes closed. "NO!" he cried. "Nat, no." Just as he felt despair wash over him he saw her eyelids flutter. She was alive! "Nat...please...Nat" Her eyes opened and found his. She smiled. He pulled her to him, relief washing over him. "I'm all right Nick," she said cuddling into his embrace. "You stopped In time. You didn't take too much." The joy that Nick felt shook his entire body. He could feel the warmth her love gave him. Unable to speak, he held her tightly in his arms and gently kissed her. She smiled back at him and snuggled up against him. They held each other and drifted into sleep. Several hours later Nick awakened. Nat was still cuddled up against him. He felt her warmth and listened to the steady beating of her heart. The memory of their lovemaking washed over him. Gazing at her, he knew that he could never be without her again. He lovingly stroked her hair and kissed her. Nat opened her eyes and looking into them he saw again the depth of her love for him. They had no secrets now. By drinking from her they had known each other completely. Each knew the other -- both strengths and faults--in a way that no two mortals could ever experience. "Nat, I promise you we will never be apart again. I want a life with you...hopefully, as a mortal. I will not lose you though and I will bring you across if and when you decide you want me to." Nat hugged him to her, tears of happiness spilling from her eyes. "I will let you know when the time is right. Right now, just knowing that forever is ours is enough."
