The sudden realization of what he had just done, hit it him. He howled in denial and savagely yanked the stake out of his back. He fell to his knees and held the lifeless body to his chest, bloody tears streamed from his eyes. It wasn't supposed to end this way, he thought miserably, gently closing Nick's unseeing eyes. The last year had been rough on them: Janette, Schanke, the demon, the fever, Divia...in their mutal grief they had both turned to each other and for the first time in almost 400 years slowly began to put their differences behind them, and now this.. He laid Nick on the floor and gently stroked Natalie's cold cheek. This woman was remarkable. Despite his repeated attempts to drive her away from Nick, she stood by him. She had single handily saved the community from the fever. More than once she had risked her life to protect Nick's secrets..their secrets. His lips twisted grimly remembering when he had stumbled across two Enforcers who had been waiting for her one night. Their deaths had been a graphic reminder to all the vampires in Toronto that she was off limits, and he would personally "deal" with anyone who tried to hurt her. "I would give anything, anything to have you back." LaCroix whispered hoarsely, staring up at the ceiling, pleading to a God he didn't believe in. He buried his head in his hands. "Anything..." he whispered, his body starting to shake. Suddenly his head snapped up. He heard something...singing at the very edges of his hearing. Almost imperceptibly the loft began to glow and a faint blue began to grow infront of him. The light suddenly flared and a woman stood infront of him. She was dressed in a simple but elegant white grown that fell gracefully to the floor. She was beautiful. Alabaster skin, a faint dusting of freckles across her nose, curly balck hair, large blue eyes and a wide mouth that was made for smiling. However it was the circle of light, the halo above her head and the delicate wings that caught his attention. He instinctively jerked away. One touch from his exalted being and he would be incinerated, but her hand felt warm on his cold cheek has he looked into her blue eyes. Infinite sorrow lingered in those eyes, has if she knew the pain he was going through. "My lady...my son..." he managed to choke out, trying to get past the lump of grief in his throat,"...please...", pleading with his heart and soul. "My name is Gabrielle. I have heard your plea Lucien LaCroix." She paused a moment has if to gather her thoughts. The unearthly choir was muted has if it was listening to the conversation. "You said," she said softly," that you would give anything to have him back. That price will be high. Are you willing to pay it?" LaCroix nodded, a faint hope rising in his chest. "Willingly." She nodded, stood up, held out her hand and pulled LaCroix to his feet with a strength that was greater than his. She took his other hand and her face was serene has she faced him. "Do you speak for Natalie Lambert as you do for your son?" "I do." "Would you take his place?" "Yes." There was no hestaiation. "Why?" "What?" LaCroix asked, genuinely confused. "Why do you want him back?" Gabrielle questioned. Her eyes grew distance as if she was communicating with someone. "He will be welcomed in Heaven if that is what you are worrying about. I must know why." she said slowly. She knew how important his answer was going to be. "He is my son." he said softly. He knew that answer wasn't the one she was seeking. She shook her head, curls dancing wildly. "That not good enough. I must know why." LaCroix was nonplussed. He would finally have to admit his true feelingd for Nicholas. How ironic that he had never admitted his true feeling for him to anyone, but to admit it to this exault being... "I Love him. I have always loved him." he said defiantly, unable to look away from her eyes. She gave him a radiant smile, her warmth infusing his soul, melting the lump of ice around his heart. "Was that so difficult to admit Lucien? What do you think is the greater sin? Admitting or denying that love? A father should love his son." She let go of his hands. He had passed the test. "Take their hands Lucien." she directed. He quickly kneeled on the floor, taking their cold hands in his. She stood behind him and put her hands on his shoulders. "This will hurt, and whatever happens you cannot let go." she whispered into his ear. LaCroix shook his head in disagreement. "No my Lady. It cannot hurt more than what I am suffering now." He sensed, rather than saw her sad smile. She took several deep breaths and began to sing in a beautiful unearthly voice. With each verse the loft was infused with a soft blue light. Her song was a mixture of a plea, a demand and finally a question. The unearthly choir that he had earlier was silent, considering her question Please, please he added silently, I'll pay the price whatever it is. Finally the choir replied. He could feel her let out a soft sigh and nod in agreement. She began to glow and he could feel the heat beginning to radiate fron her hands. It was pleasant at first, like being out on a warm summer day, then it began to burn. LaCroix whimpered and closed his eyes unwilling to see the smoke rise from his body. The pain increased tenfold but he didn't let go of their hands. His screams echoed with choir and he finally pasted out. comment to scarlet@cam.org _____________________________________________________________________ ***Interested in Sci-Fi...Warp 9 General Sci-fi FanClub. His internal time clock told him it was almost sunset. A whole day had pasted. "Lie still for a few minutes." Gabrielle said in a tired but satisfied voice. After a few minutes he started to feel better. It took a few tries but he finally managed to sit up, looked at Nick and Nat and felt his jaw drop. He heard two, not one, human heart beats. He mentally reached for Nicholas through his bloodbond, but felt nothing. No vampire presence radiated from him. "What happened? he demanded. He could not believe what his senses were telling him. "A miracle." Gabrielle was curled up on the sofa watching him. She looked very pleased with herself. Awed he started at her. "Why?" "Love and faith. You loved both of them enough that you were willing to give your own life for them. I think that tipped the scale in your favour. They also had faith that whatever happened, they would be together." She paused for a moment. " Besides my punishment...well I can live with it. Looking after cherubs can't be that bad...I hope." She gracefully stood up and LaCriox did the same. "I have to go." She cocked her head has if listening to someone. "Oh tell Nicholas that someone took care of I.A and he's been cleared of any wrong doing. Tell him that Tracy and Javier are fine." She began to glow. "I'll be looking in on you once in a while. Take care of yourself." There was a flash of light and she was gone. LaCroix sat down on the sofa, his eyes picking up the quickening heart beats. He smiled to himself. He could hardly wait to see their expressions. "Welcome back to the land of the living." LaCroix said calmly. Both Nick and Nat sat up at the same time and looked at each other. Nat touched her neck in wonder and turned to Nick. "You bit me and I was dying..." she trailed off confusingly, "Am I a vampire?" "Hardly, my dear." A smile crossed LaCroix's face. This was just too amusing for words. Nick was staring at his hands in amazement. He could feel his heart beating in his chest, and he no longer feel LaCroix presence. "You killed me. I remember the stake going through my back. How?" He demanded has Nat grabbed his wrist and checked his pulse> It beat like a normal person. His skin felt warm, like a normal person. Her heart began to pound wildly. LaCroix's smile grew broader, and Nick felt his jaw drop. He had NEVER seen LaCroix smile like that in his entire life. "Well, it all started after you both were dead..." LaCroix began and explained the entire story, not leaving out any details. Nick and Nat were stunned when he finished his tale. "I really don't know what to say." Nick muttered and Nat echoed in agreement. LaCroix smiled and got up. "I have to get to work. I'm on the air in an hour. I'm sure that you both have several important thing s to discuss." He walked over to the door and paused. "Oh by the way Nicholas. I will be very disappointed if I'm not the best man at your wedding." LaCroix laughed softly and let himself out.
