Thank you! "Keep it up, Nick" A Forever Knight Quickie by Quack "It's the most unexpected thing. I mean, if it weren't for the recent research I would never have thought about it." Nick stared at Natalie and wondered how to go about saying "no". The last time she had suggested a drug he wound up crazed, shot and with a really bad sunburn. The truth was he didn't have the heart to say "no." He didn't have a human heart at all. But he wanted one. "Is it safe for human use?" Nick asked concerned. "Not beef, not pork, not chicken -- but the vampire's preferred food group?" Natalie, of course, thwapped him. "Yes, I'm sure it's perfectly safe," she said after giving him her sternest glare. "As a matter of fact, the FDA -- the most anal of all regulatory agencies in the world -- has approved it." "So what is it?" he asked as he rubbed his shoulder. Nat packed a pretty good wallop. Natalie fidgeted a little. How was she going to explain this? After a moment she decided to be direct. "It's sildenafil citrate," she said, meeting his gaze squarely. "Which is...?" Nick raised his eyebrows at her. Nat thought. "It's a phosphodiesterase inhibitor. It works by blocking the enzyme that..." Nick threw his hands up. He wasn't in the mood for the long version. "Okay, okay," he said resignedly. "What about side effects?" Natalie grinned. "Oh, I don't think you'll mind those." He didn't like the smirk on her face. "Like what side effects?" "Well," she said evasively, "let's just say it'll add color to your cheeks." she added silently. They decided to add the new medicine to a protein drink. The extra nutrition couldn't hurt, Natalie reasoned. Crushing the PDE5 inhibitor tablets into a fine powder, Natalie prepared the drink while Nick mentally prepared himself. He had decided to sit this one out ... literally. The immediate effects of their last such effort had been severe, and Nick didn't think Natalie would appreciate his turning over another tray full of instruments. He chose the chair by Nat's desk and sat down, taking several slow deep breaths. Natalie handed Nick the pitcher filled with the concoction. He sniffed it and wrinkled his nose. "Go on," Natalie urged. Taking a big breath and closing his eyes, Nick began to chug the thick, creamy liquid. "Keep it up, Nick!" Natalie cheered. "Don't stop now!" Completely out of breath and out of liquid cure, Nick slammed the pitcher down on the desk and wiped his mouth with the back of his shirt sleeve. "Nick," Natalie chided, "that shirt is SILK!" He wasn't listening, she realized. He seemed distracted. Natalie knew this wasn't the flashback kind of distraction, either. The room seemed to fade as Nick became more and more aware of the change happening in the core of his being. After eight hundred years of terrible blood lust, a new lust now enveloped him. A lust for life. His head drooped forward onto his chest as he concentrated. Nick could feel the vampire begin to fade. It shriveled away, loosening its clutches on the roots of his soul. And as the demon of the night left, Nick could feel another member rising. Natalie could not stand it another minute. The struggle was silent but the stakes were high. "Nick," she whispered, "what's happening?" When he didn't respond right away, Natalie's concern grew. "Talk to me, Nick. Tell me what's up." His hands remained were they were, dangling between his knees, as he slowly raised his head to look at her. This was no ordinary look. This was the deer-caught-in-the-headlights look. "Maybe you should lie down." Natalie gestured toward the exam table. "Let me have a look at you." "No!" Nick replied too quickly, "maybe in a few minutes." Swiveling to face the desk, he quickly pulled himself forward, tucking his legs under the desk and out of view. Natalie asked herself. "Who's the doctor here?" she said stubbornly. "I need to examine you." Nick realized that he never won these arguments. Resigned to the inevitable, he kicked back and let the chair roll away from the desk. Natalie immediately discerned the nature of Nick's current medical problem. "Oh!" Natalie said, eyes wide. She swallowed. "Oh!" Two hours later, the situation hadn't resolved itself and Natalie was becoming concerned with Nick's comfort level. They had experimented with many ways of treating Nick's condition -- recumbent, reverse, oral, and manual manipulation -- but the solution remained temporary after each experiment. However, after the first few attempts, Natalie had stopped taking notes. Nick didn't become too panicked until his cell phone went off. He was late for his shift and he realized that he was going to have to go to work in this condition. "Why didn't you TELL me this was Viagra?" "Well," Natalie began, trying not to be too embarrassed by her secret delight at the present turn of events, "it's never been used on vampires before. How was I supposed to know that you would be exchanging one form of eternity for another?" Nick put on his long coat and buttoned it all the way down, wondering if he was really destined to forever look to Natalie for cheap, temporary fixes. Nat smiled devilishly. "Look on the bright side. At least you're mortal now!" Nick grinned back at her. "Very tired, but mortal!" Natalie watched Nick's retreating back, content in the knowledge that she, at least, would live happily ever after. -fin- Comments and offers for free prescription drug insurance coverage to Quacked3@geocities.com.  Visit the Quacked Web Site at http//www.geocities.com/TelevisionCity/1163, which has a link to more information about "the cure" in this story.
