It's not beta read so be kind. Disclaimers: I do not own Forever Knight or any of its characters. I thank TPTB for letting me take them out and play with them and I promise to put them back in good condition (or an unreasonable facsimile thereof). The Knight the Tables Turned (01/01) KaliraRael =A9 1999 *************** October 30, 1999 The 96th Precinct Detective Nicholas B. Knight was sitting at his desk staring at the envelope which rested there. It hadn't been there before he went into Capt. Reese's office. He had only stepped into the office for a moment to leave the final reports of Tracy and his last case. That had taken just a couple of seconds. He had not seen, heard or felt anyone pass by his desk and yet the envelope was there. As he reached for the envelope, he glanced around the bull pen to see if he could catch anyone watching with unusual interest, but no one was looking his way. He opened the envelope and pulled out a sheet of plain white paper, standard stuff, which anyone could purchase anywhere. --Meet me in the old Billings Manor House, midnight tomorrow. Come alone. A life depends on it.-- That was all. The note was computer generated and untracable. Nick quickly took the note into Capt. Reese. "Cap, take a look at this." "What is it?", asked Captain Joe Reese. "I found that note on my desk just now. I have no idea who left it.", Nick told him. After reading the note, Reese looked up at his best detective and asked, "Do you think it's real?" "I'm not willing to take the chance of not believing it.", Nick replied, "I'm going." "Alright, I'll send Harlow and Sadowski out as back up." "No, Cap! The note said I should come alone. That a life depended on it! We can't risk them being spotted and losing that life!", Nick said insistently. Reese glared at Nick disgustedly. "You know department regulations as well as I do, Nick! This might be a set up. I can't let you go out there without back up! This is *not* negotiable!" Nick caught Reese in his gaze. "You know I have to do this alone." "You're not going to send any back up. Do you understand?" "Yeah, I do!", Reese responded softly while wearing a "deer in the head lights" look. "Good.", Nick said, and let him go. Reese closed his eyes and gave his head a small shake. When he looked up again, Nick was gone. *********************************** October 31, midnight The old Billings Manor House Nick stood on the curb beside his Caddy looking at the house. It had been abandoned years ago when the entire Billings family had been murdered in the Manor by person or persons unknown. 20 years ago investigation and been stopped. There were no clues, no suspects, no apparent motive. No one had lived in the house since except a few rats. Rumor had it that the place was haunted. Nick used his vampire enhanced hearing to listen inside the house. One heartbeat, extremely rapid.........frightened. Quickly, but quietly, Nick entered the Manor and tracked the heartbeat down into the cellar. There, seated in a chair and tied to it, was Natalie. A gag was tied tight around her head, and terror shimmered in her tearful eyes. Nick ran over, released her bonds and removed her gag. Natalie threw her arms around his neck. "Oh Nick, thank God you came. I was so scared. They were gonna kill me if you didn't show up!" "Shhhh. It's okay Nat. I'm here, and I won't let anyone hurt you.", Nick soothed her. "Who was it? Who did this to you?" There was no time to answer, as the sound of footsteps entering the Manor was heard over their heads. "It's them!", Nat gasped. "They're here!" Nick quickly searched the cellar for a way out. Nothing! They were trapped. The only way out was up the stairs and through the Manor. Nick looked into Natalie's white face and wide round eyes, and tucked her into his arm. "Stick close to me, Nat. I'll get us out of here, I promise!" Nick and Nat went slowly up the stairs to the door. Nick listened carefully and counted the different footstep. A chill went down his spine. There were close to 30 people up there! Who was this gang? He had never heard of one so large in Toronto. Whispering to Natalie to stay behind him, Nick flung the door open and dashed into the room. "HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!!!!!", yelled the off duty members of the 96th Precinct. Nick stared stupefied at all his co-workers, then turned to find himself confronted with Natalie's smug look. "We got tired of hearing your ridiculous excuses not to attend the annual Halloween party.", she explained. "So we decided to turn the tables on you and come up with an equally ridiculous way to get you to show up! And look, you even came in the perfect disguise.........A Brave Knight Rescuing The Damsel In Distress!!" Nick dropped his head into his hands and groaned. It was going to be a looooong night. end.
