He had tied to sleep also, but the wonder and excitement that had filled him when Nat had told him that she was pregnant with their child still possessed him making sleep impossible. As he gently stroked her hair, he was glad that she had agreed to spend the day with him. He was content, to hold her in his arms and dream about the future. "We're going to have a baby." Nick smiled as he recalled how he had been rendered nearly speechless by her words. It wasn't until he realized that she was afraid that he would be unhappy, as if that could have been possible, to learn of his impending fatherhood that he had held her and assured her of his joy. She had all but collapsed into his embrace, as the relief she felt and the hormonal changes that were already taking place in her, brought on a brief onslaught of tears. For a long while they had simply sat together, needing no words to express their contentment. Seeing that Nat was exhausted, and not wanting her to leave, Nick suggested that she spend the day at the loft. "I'd like that Nick, if it won't be too difficult for you." Nat replied recalling the confession he had made only a little more than a day earlier. The encounter with the demon had caused a resurgence of his desire for human blood, rather than the cow's blood he normally drank. "I'll be fine. I don't want you trying to drive home as tired as you are. Most of all, I don't want you to leave, I need to hold you in my arms." Nick smiled a bit self-consciously. "I'm afraid that if I wake up and you're not there, I'll find out that this has all been a wonderful dream." Nat smiled up at him. " I know what you mean. I still can't believe that I'm going to have your child." She snuggled her head against his chest. "I want this baby so much, Nick," she breathed. Kissing her forehead, Nick tightened his embrace. "So do I, Nat. So do I." Together they had climbed the stairs to the bedroom. Soon they lay in each other's arms and Nat had drifted into an easy sleep. Nick lay watching her as she slept trustingly in his arms. Her scent filling his nostrils and the warmth of her body was like a balm to his. How often he had lain alone in this bed, dreaming of just a moment like this. Each day since the night that they had been together, he had replayed each moment of that time in his memory, and despaired of ever having the chance to again experience it. Now, he was at peace in a way that had eluded him for almost 800 years. He knew that LaCroix would find out about Nat's pregnancy, but Nick was not concerned. For all LaCroix's posturing otherwise, Nick knew that LaCroix respected and admired Nat and that he would never harm a child of Nick's. The Enforcer's had made it clear by their lack of interference all these years, that they did not consider Nat to be a threat to the safety of the Community. With thoughts of what his unborn son or daughter would be like slowly running through his mind, Nick fell into a deep, restful sleep. It was almost 4pm when Nat stirred and slowly opened her eyes. For just an instant she was uncertain as to where she was, but the feel of Nick's cool firm body against her own quickly reminded her that she had stayed at the loft. Smiling, she looked at Nick's sleeping face. 'He looks so peaceful.' She thought.. 'This is the first time that I've ever seen him sleep.' She lay still, not wanting to awaken him, enjoying the feeling of security being in his arms brought. As she watched he opened his eyes and seeing her gaze, lifted her chin to plant a soft kiss on her lips. "I could get very used to waking up like this," he murmured into her hair. "How about it Nat. What do you say we make this a regular event." Nat smiled back at him. " I think I could manage waking up with you every day without too much trouble." She had spoken lightly, but looking at Nick suddenly realized that he was very serious about this. Nick took her hand in his. "Nat, will you marry me?" Nat couldn't speak for an instant, she knew that she loved Nick and the thought of marriage to him made her want to shout "YES!" She needed to know, however, why he had picked now to ask. 'I don't want him to marry me because he feels that he has too, because of the baby,' Nat thought. 'I want him to marry me because he loves me.' "Nick, before I answer you will you tell me why you picked now to ask me this?" Nick smiled at her. "Fair enough. One reason I want to marry you is because I don't want to just be on the fringes of this baby's life. I want to be a father to our child." He traced the outline of her face with his fingers. "But that isn't the most important reason. Nat, I've loved you from the moment I saw you. You complete me. I have never told you this because I didn't feel that I had the right. I always felt that you deserved more than I could offer you. I knew how much you loved children and as a vampire I knew that I could never give you a child." He paused and looked deep into her eyes. "Now, by what I can only consider a miracle, you're carrying my child. And I hope that perhaps, it is a sign that I can dare to hope that you will accept my love for you. I want to believe that TOGETHER we can find either a cure or a way for us to show our love without it causing your death. The past few weeks, when we were apart, I have been miserable. Please, Nat I want to marry you because I LOVE you and cannot imagine my life without you." Nat closed her eyes as Nick finished speaking. She had wanted to hear those words for a very long time, but had resigned herself to the possibility that she never would. Smiling back at him, tears of hope and happiness filling her eyes, she gave him her answer. "I can't imagine my life without you either. Together, Nick we will find a way. Yes, I'll marry you." Nick's mouth found hers. His kiss was soft and gentle at first, but Nat's response to it caused it to deepen. Beneath him, Nat made small sounds of pleasure as he allowed his hands to stroke and caress her body. For both the memory of the last time they had shared this bed filled their minds. Nick deepened the kiss farther. He could feel the growing pressure in his loins as he hardened and desire swept through him. When he suddenly felt the warm touch of Nat's hand on his pulsating manhood, he gave a gasp of intense pleasure. How he loved her! Nick slowly shifted his kisses from Nat's mouth moving down her throat and finally suckling gently on her full breasts. He realized that they were indeed somewhat fuller than the last time he had enjoyed their taste and the knowledge that this was due to her carrying his child, enabled him to control his beast. Being careful not to hurt her, Nick slid his turgid penis into her warm welcoming center. The feel of Nat's hands as she drew him closer, fed the fire burning in him and with gentle thrusts he brought both her and himself to the edge of release. He felt his fangs drop and shut his eyes, hoping to keep his condition from Nat. As she felt herself cresting the wave of pleasure that making love to Nick was producing, Nat saw the gold suddenly come into his eyes. As he quickly shut them, she realized that only with blood would he find his own release. Trusting him, she pulled her hand from behind his neck. "Nick, here, please drink. I want you to come with me." The now golden eyes of the man she loved gazed back at her. Seeing the anguish in his expression she offered her wrist to him. "Drink Nick. I know you won't hurt me or our baby." Nick bent his head and kissed her wrist before sinking his fangs into it. The unexpected sweetness of her blood filled his mouth and he felt his body shudder as he climaxed. The unconditional love and total lack of fear that her blood carried quickly satiated his beast and having drunk but a few mouthfuls he withdrew his fangs from her. Kissing and licking away the last small droplets of blood, Nick eased his weight from Nat and cuddled her in his arms. Nat lay in Nick's arms savoring the feeling of total contentment that filled her. Her body still tingled with the power of her orgasm and her heart was bursting from the sense of love she had experience when Nick drank. The depth of his love for her she now knew could not be expressed in words. All worries that she had on the rightness of her decision to marry him had been vanquished. It was almost 5:30 before they reluctantly arose to prepare for the night ahead. Having finally showered and dressed, Nat stood in the kitchen of Nick's loft and said a silent prayer of thanks that she had left some frozen orange juice and bagels in the freezer from her stay here when Nick was injured. She had just finished heating a bagel when Nick came downstairs. Smiling at Nat, he crossed to the fridge and removing a bottle, poured himself a glass of cow's blood. Together, they carried their breakfasts over to the couch and sat down side by side. After taking a swallow from his glass, Nick sat it on the table beside him. "While you were in the shower, I made a few phone calls." Nick said smiling. "Are you busy tomorrow afternoon? Say about 4:30?" Nat paused for a moment to think. "No, I don't have anything scheduled. Why?" Nick smiled broadly, "I took the liberty of arranging to have the clerk's office stay open a little later than usual. If we go tomorrow afternoon, we can get a marriage license. It will be good for 30 days, but I hope you won't make me wait that long." Nat could feel her eyes fill with tears of happiness. "How soon after the license is issued can it be used?" "According to the lady I spoke with," Nick replied, "it's good as soon as it's issued." He hoped that Nat was considering a very short engagement. Looking into Nick's eyes, Nat whispered, "Then let's not wait at all. When we get the license, let's find a judge and get married." She gently punched Nick in the shoulder, "After all you're not getting any younger you know." Nick laughed and pulled her into a deep embrace. "I was hoping you'd feel that way, but are you sure you don't want a wedding, even if it's just a small one?" Nat laid her head on Nick's chest. "I don't care about a wedding. I just want to be married to you. I want to go to sleep in your arms and wake up in them. I love you Nick and so far as I'm concerned, being with you is all that is important." She glanced at the clock on the table and with a sigh, rose from the couch. "I've got to stop by my apartment and feed Sidney before I go into work." Nick rose and after helping Nat with her coat reached for his own. "I need to be leaving too. I have a few stops to make before I clock on." Together, they entered the lift. The ride down to the garage was far too short and they reluctantly broke from the embrace they had shared during it. As Nick shut the driver's door on Nat's car he leaned down. "Come back here after work. Spend the day with me." When she nodded her agreement he gave her a final kiss through the window, then stepped back as she drove off. Whistling softly, Nick got in the Caddy and drove out of the garage. End part 1 Comments, etc to cstar@pdq,net. Love's Gift (part2/5) by Nightlady (c) 1997 Disclaimers--please see part 1 Nick walked into the precinct and headed for his desk. As he sat at the desk he felt the small jeweler's box in his coat pocket bump against his leg. Smiling slightly, he reached inside the pocket and closed his hand around the box. He allowed his mind to drift, to imagine Nat's reaction to the contents of the box. "Nick? You okay?" Nick started slightly as Tracy's voice penetrated his reverie. "Just fine, Tracy." He said with a grin. "In fact, I can't remember the last time I felt this good." "Uh huh." Tracy looked at Nick curiously. "And that's why it took me three minutes to get your attention." Nick laughed, "Well Trace, I guess I was too busy imagining what Natalie is going to say when I give her this." He removed the box from his coat pocket and opened it to reveal a large pear shaped diamond set in a band of gold. Tracy's eyes widened as she looked at the ring. "Nick! You're going to ask Nat to marry you!" She exclaimed, a huge grin on her face. "Well, actually I already have," Nick responded. "And as you may have deduced, she said yes." "I am so glad to hear that! You two are perfect for one another!" "Tracy, all I know is that I cannot imagine my life without her." Nick had spoken softly, but the depth of his love for Nat was clear in his voice. Tracy smiled and reached over to lay her hand on his. "So are you planning a big wedding or what?" "Actually, we are thinking more in line of a quick trip to the judge." Nick answered. "Neither, Nat or I have anything in the way of family, and a wedding takes too long to put together." Tracy considered for a minute, wondering if there was something else she wasn't aware of, then replied. "That makes sense. So when do you plan on making it legal?" "Tomorrow." Nick nearly choked at the expression on Tracy's face that one word produced. "Tomorrow!!! You really meant it when you said a quick trip!" Tracy exclaimed. "Man oh man I would love to see Grace's face when she hears the news!" Nat walked into the Coroner's building, still in somewhat of a daze. She was happier than she had been in years. 'And why shouldn't I be happy? The man I love more than anything in the world just asked me to marry him and I'm going to have his child.' As she approached Grace's desk, she smiled at her friend. "Good evening, Grace. It's a beautiful night isn't it?" Grace looked up at Nat with a questioning expression. "Excuse me but who are you? I know you look like Natalie Lambert, but you are much too bouncy to be her." Nat laughed, "Very funny, Grace." Grace smiled back, "Well, you have to admit that you've been less than jubilant the past several weeks. I gather that you are over that virus you had the other night?" Nat took a deep breath, "Actually, it turned out to be the same type of virus your sister had." She heard Grace's sharp intake of breath. "I found out yesterday afternoon and I told Nick last night." Nat could not keep the smile off of her face. Grace had risen from her desk, "And? What did he have to say?" "He said, 'Let's get married.' And I said, 'Yes.'" Grace wrapped Nat in a hug. "Oh sweetie, I cannot tell you how happy this news makes me." She pulled back to look at Nat. "Yep, you look like a woman in love." Nat laughed, "Good, because that is exactly what I am!" "So when's the big day going to be?" Grace asked. "Tomorrow." Nat laughed out loud as Grace all but fell back into her chair. When Nick and Tracy entered the Coroner's building it quickly became evident that the grapevine here was just as efficient as the one at the precinct. Nick smiled as he responded to quiet words of congratulations from the various staff members. As they rounded the corner, Grace looked up and saw them. Nick could feel his smile broaden as Grace approached him. "You had better take good care of Nat, or you'll have to answer to me." She said as she hugged him. "You don't have to worry Grace. I will see to it that Nat never wants for anything. I promise that every day of her life she will know just how much I love her." Grace nodded, "Yes, I do believe she will." She released Nick from her embrace. "So what brings the two of you here? We don't have any of your cases?" Nick glanced at Tracy. "Think I should show her?" Tracy pretended to think. "Yeah, I think so." "Show me what?" Grace said looking from Tracy to Nick. Nick opened the box, "This. Do you think Nat will like it?" He held the ring where Grace could see it. "Like it? Nick she is going to LOVE it." Grace said. "And if she doesn't I'll be glad to take it off your hands and you don't even have to marry me!" Nick and Tracy both laughed at that. Nick turned, "Now if you two ladies will excuse me a moment, I'm going to give my bride to be her engagement ring." As he strode down the hall, Nick could hear Grace and Tracy as they happily discussed his and Nat's upcoming marriage. Reaching Nat's office he paused outside the door. He could hear the calm, steady beat of her heart and, with a smile, Nick knocked lightly on the door as he opened it. "Got a few minutes to see a lonely cop?" He asked as he entered. Nat stood up from her desk and crossed to him. "I think I can manage a few minutes." She melted into his arms as he kissed her. "Or even a little longer." She said as she snuggled into his embrace. Nick stood holding her. Her scent and the feel of her body against his were something he knew would never cease to bring him joy. "I have something for you," he said smiling down into her face. "And I wanted to give it to you as soon as possible." Reaching into his pocket he took out the jeweler's box and removed the ring. Lifting her left hand he slipped the ring on her finger. "I've wasted too many years that I could have spent with you already." Nat looked at the brilliant diamond that sparkled on her finger. She could feel her heart as it pounded in her chest. "Oh, Nick it's beautiful." She looked up at him; her eyes shining with such happiness that Nick felt his breath catch in his throat. For a moment they stood looking deep into each others eyes, then their lips met in a kiss that spoke not only of the love that they shared now, but promised that it would last forever. It was several minutes before they reluctantly broke their embrace. Looking down at the beautiful ring, Nat asked, "When did you manage to get this?" "I stopped at a little jewelry shop I know before I came into work. The owner is going to come by the loft tomorrow, about 1pm and bring over a selection of wedding bands for us to see." He hugged Nat as he saw the delighted expression on her face. 'And to bring me a little something special I ordered from him tonight.' Nick thought to himself. "Wedding bands. I hadn't even thought about where we were going to get those." Nat confessed as she rested her head on Nick's shoulder. "Oh, Nick, I've got so much to do in order to be ready for tomorrow." Nick kissed her hair, "Don't worry about a thing. All the important stuff will get done and everything else can wait." He felt her relax against him as she accepted his reassurance. "You're right. I will not get myself into a frenzy over this. But I am going to go shopping tomorrow for a dress." Nat said contentedly. "After we pick out the rings. But you do know that I would marry you even if you were wearing a warm up outfit." Nick teased. "You!" Nat exclaimed as she lightly punched his shoulder. "Come on," Nick said indicating the door, "Tracy and Grace are probably going nuts out there waiting to see the ring on you." Nat rolled her eyes. "Oh my, I'm sure you're right about that!" Together they left the office to find Tracy and Grace watching the door from a short distance down the hall. As soon as the two women caught sight of Nick and Nat they moved toward them. For several minutes the usually somber hallway of the Coroner's building echoed with laughter and squeals of admiration as not only Tracy and Grace, but the rest of the staff took a minute or two to rejoice with the happy couple. Finally, Nick and Tracy had to leave and calm returned to the hallways. Natalie went first to her apartment after work in order to pack a few essentials and to pick up Sidney. Arriving at Nick's building she was preparing to park her car in the spot she normally did when one of the other garage doors began to open. Look inside, she saw Nick standing in the open bay. He motioned for her to pull into the garage. Once she was inside, Nick stepped over to the car and opened the door for Nat. "Since you are going to be living here from now on, I thought you should have somewhere out of the weather to park." He said as he helped her from the car. Reaching past her, Nick clipped a remote for the door to the visor on the driver's side. When he had finished doing that, he handed a smaller remote to Nat. "Guess this makes me official, huh?" Nat said as she took the remote. Suddenly, Sidney let out a yowl, to remind her that he was less than happy in the cat carrier. "No," Nick laughed at the sound the cat made, "the fact that Sidney is here makes you official, this is just a loose end." Picking up the carrier and Nat's bag, Nick led the way to the lift. He couldn't remember the last time that he had felt so good. After the loss of Schanke, Nick had wondered if he would ever feel happy again. Now, in just a short time after three of the worst experiences in his very long life, he was on the brink of having most of what he desired. He might not yet be mortal, but the woman he loved would, within the space of twenty-four hours, be his wife and they would welcome a child into their lives in just over seven months. As the lift stopped, Nick opened the door and watched as Natalie stepped into her new home. After making a quick check for any possible dangers to Sidney, Nat released him from the carrying case. She and Nick laughed as they watched his exploration of the loft. Knowing that they both had a very busy day ahead, Nick and Nat went hand in hand up the stairs to the bedroom. It wasn't until she actually lay down that Nat realized just how tired she was and moments after Nick gathered her in his arms, she was deeply asleep. Nick lay awake for a while, content just to watch Nat sleep in his arms. It was so much more than he had ever dreamed of and to his joy so much less than the total of what they could share. He gently ran his hand across Nat's still flat abdomen and thought of the child that was growing within. Wondering, as all fathers tend to, if he would be capable of the demands of parenthood, Nick fell asleep. End part 2 Comments, etc. to cstar@pdq.net Love's Gift (part3/5) by Nightlady (c) 1997 Disclaimers--please see part 1 Shortly before noon, Nick and Nat awoke. The quickly showered, dressed and ate in order to be ready for the visit from the jeweler. A precisely 1pm, he arrived with several trays of wedding bands. It only took Nick and Nat a short time to decide on a set of wide 24-karat gold bands. Nat sat looking at the rings with a sense of joy as the jeweler repacked the other trays and left. Shortly after 1:30pm, Nat left the loft to meet Tracy and Grace at one of the city's best stores. Nat's two friends had insisted on being allowed to help her select suitable dress for Nat to wear that evening to be married. The thought of actually being Nick's wife caused shivers of happy anticipation up and down her spine. An hour later, after having tried on more dresses in that time than she usually tried on in a year, Nat had found the perfect dress. It was a soft cream color, princess style that looked marvelous on her. The price was almost double what she would normally spend on a dress, but it wasn't every day that she bought an outfit to be married in! Handing over her charge card to the clerk, Nat waited eagerly for the dress to be wrapped. Both Tracy and Grace agreed that she looked radiant in it and assured her that Nick would think so too. "By the way, Nat, what time is your appointment with the judge?" Tracy asked as they were getting ready to leave. "I really don't know." Natalie laughed. "Nick was going to set that up while I was doing this." "When you get back to the loft and find out give one of us a call. We'd like to be there if you don't mind." Grace said hugging Nat. "I don't mind and neither will Nick. I'll be sure and let you know." Nat said as she got in her car. Waving to her friends, she drove off. Nick had spent the day making the final arrangements, setting a time of 5:15pm to meet with the judge for the actual ceremony, contacting a florist for a bouquet for Nat to carry, and a return visit by the jeweler. Nick had instructed the man to wait until Nat left before returning. Alone, Nick had chosen a sapphire and ruby necklace as a wedding gift for Nat. He smiled as he patted the slender box now hidden in his jacket pocket. He was already dressed when Nat returned and after a quick kiss, went down stairs to allow her to finish her own preparations. He promised to call Tracy and give her the time to meet them at the judge's office. When he called he arranged for Tracy to stop at the florist's and pick up the bouquet. Shortly, before 4pm Nick heard the bedroom door open. He watched as Nat, somewhat nervously descended the stairs. "You are absolutely beautiful." He said as he met her at the bottom of the stairs and took her in his arms. Nat raised a face filled with love and excitement and looked deeply into his eyes. "You're sure you want to go through with this?" Natalie teased. "Nat, I want this more than I want mortality." Nick replied. "To be with you, to raise this child is the most important thing in my existence." He saw the tears form in her eyes and softly kissed her lips. Leading her over to the couch, he waited until she was seated before handing her the slender box. "What's this?" Nat said. "A very small token of my love for you." Nick waited with anticipation as she opened the box. The look on her face as she saw the necklace was one that he would remember forever. Nat could hardly believe the beauty of the Necklace in front of her. It was a thick gold chain from which was suspended a pendant consisting of a large, flawless, square-cut ruby surrounded by pale blue sapphires. "Nick, this is magnificent! I've never seen anything so beautiful in my life!" Nat breathed. "It pales compared to you." Nick said as he took the necklace from her and fastened it around her neck. He looked at it as it lay shimmering against the pale cream material of her dress. The ruby reflecting the color of her lips even as the sapphires caused the blue of her eyes to deepen. Standing he offered her his hand. "Will you come with me now and do me the honor of becoming by wife?" Nat took his hand and rose gracefully to her feet. "Yes," she said smiling, "I will." Pausing only long enough for a gentle kiss, they gathered up their coats and headed for the lift. Nat pulled the Caddy into a parking space deep in the underground garage. Getting out she opened the trunk and waited as Nick emerged from it. The banks of elevators that would enable them to reach their destination without having to risk exposure to the last rays of the sun, were only a few yards away. Hand in hand, Nick and Nat rode up to the sixth floor of the municipal building. As they exited the elevators, they spotted Tracy and Grace all ready waiting for them. While Grace was hugging a beaming Nat, Nick quickly retrieved the bouquet that Tracy had picked up. He nodded in pleasure as he looked at the delicate arrangement of white roses, blue cornflowers and small red sweetheart roses. Lifting it from the box he carried it over to Nat. "Every bride should have a bouquet." He said as he handed it to her. The radiant look on her face was reflected in his own. Nat held the flowers to her nose and inhale the rich aroma. "They're beautiful and I love them." She could feel the butterflies in her stomach, as the fact that in a few more minutes she would be Mrs. Nicholas Knight suddenly became real. The sense of happiness that this brought was almost overwhelming and Nat had to blink back tears of joy. After a quick visit to the clerk's office, Nick and Nat, with Tracy and Grace following, headed to the chambers of the judge that would perform the marriage ceremony. Less than twenty minutes later Nick and Nat emerged, now married. Nick and Tracy walked into the precinct having first dropped Grace and Nat off at the Coroner's building. Since there had been no chance to arrange for vacation time, the honeymoon would have to wait until later. As they went back into the detectives' area, Reese's voice met them. "Knight, Vetter the interrogation room, NOW!" Nick sighed and looked at Tracy, "I should have known that everything was going too smoothly to last." Tracy shrugged, "We're not late, all of our paperwork is current, how bad can it be?" Nick gave a snort of amusement and shook his head. As they neared the interrogation room, he realized that there were already a number of people inside it. Reese stood at the door waiting for Nick and Tracy to arrive, and looking past them down the hall. Nick saw a quick twitch of Reese's lips and at the same time became aware that someone was approaching him from behind. An instant later he recognized the sound of Nat's heartbeat. Nick stopped and waited as Nat caught up with Tracy and him. "What's going on?" Nat asked, somewhat breathlessly. "There was a message waiting for me at my office saying I was need here ASAP." Nick noticed that Tracy seemed to be having a difficult time keeping a straight face. "I don't know," Nick replied, "but I'm starting to have a few suspicions." He took Nat's hand and after a glance at Tracy, continued on to where Reese stood. Inside the room, Nick and Nat could see most of the other detectives as well as a number of staff members from the Coroner's office. They could also see a large banner reading "Congratulations Nick and Nat" "You two really didn't think that you could get married without any of us finding out?" Reese said smiling. "After all, half the Metro Toronto police force has been trying to get the two of you together for years." Nick laughed, "No, I guess we couldn't. Thanks Capt." "Yes, thank you!" Nat said as she stood on tiptoe to kiss Reese on the cheek. Hand in hand, Nick and Nat moved about the small room receiving congratulations from their fellow workers. They each accepted a piece of the cake, and Nat after eating some of hers quietly changed plates with Nick, thus avoiding any awkward questions. The festivities ended after about a half-hour and Nick was walking Nat back through the precinct when Reese stopped them both. "I just finished talking with your superior, Natalie," he began, "and wanted to let you know that you are officially off duty for the rest of the night." He turned with a smile to Nick. "So are you. Consider it our wedding present to the two of you." His smile grew as he saw the slightly shocked expressions on Nick and Nat's faces. "Well, don't just stand here, go home! After all this is your wedding night." Nick smiled back. Going home with Natalie definitely appealed to him. "Thanks Capt. and thank Dr. Ashburn for us too." Looping an arm around Nat's shoulders, he grabbed his coat and led her out of the precinct. As the Caddy pulled into the garage at the loft, Nick turned to smile at Nat. "We're home Mrs. Knight." "I like the sound of that." Nat said happily. "I still feel like I'm going to wake up and find that all this has been a dream." She gazed at Nick with such love that he gathered her against him. "It's real and I plan to prove it to you now, and every day from now on." "OOH I love the sound of THAT!" Nick got out of the car and walked around to open the door for Nat. Together, they went to the lift. As they rode up in it, Nick pulled Nat into his arms and kissed her deeply. Just before the lift stopped, he picked her up. "Time to carry my bride across the threshold," he murmured into her ear. Nat giggled, and laid her head against his shoulder. "I have some thoughts as to where you can put me down once we're inside." She stroked his cheek with one hand. The glint in Nick's eyes told her that he was sharing her thoughts on the matter. Nick opened the door and carried Nat inside and toward the stairs leading to the bedroom. As he started to climb them a tall figure stepped out of the shadows on the upstairs landing. "My, my, I do hope that I'm not interrupting anything. " LaCroix's cool voice halted Nick in his footsteps. Nick could hear the sudden increase in Nat's heartbeat. "As a matter of fact, you are." Nick replied. He gave Nat a reassuring squeeze. "I heard a most interesting rumor earlier this evening. According to it the two of you are pretending to be married." LaCroix fixed his steely stare on them. "Have you suddenly decided to abandon your attempts to 'cure' Nicholas and decided to join our little club, Doctor?" He smiled coldly at Nat. "If so, then I suppose I must thank you for Nicholas' return to his true nature." Nat glared back at LaCroix, but fear of what he might do to her unborn child made her keep silent. It was better to let Nick deal with this. "Neither of us has abandoned anything, LaCroix. As a matter of fact, I feel more human now than I ever have." Nick spoke quietly. He knew that there would be no chance of keeping Nat's pregnancy hidden from LaCroix. He also knew that he would die before he allowed her or their unborn child to be harmed. Nick hoped that the idea of a grandchild might appeal to his father. Nick looked at Nat, hoping that she would understand what he was about to do. She met his eyes, and he felt her take a sudden, sharp breath as she realized what he was preparing to say to LaCroix. For several seconds they held one another's gaze, then Nat smiled and nodded. Nick gently stood her on her feet, and slipping his arm around her waist, looked back at his master. "Nat and I are going to have a child, LaCroix. You are going to be a grandfather of sorts." The stunned look on LaCroix's face was something that Nick would remember forever. End part 3 comments, etc. to cstar@pdq.net Love's Gift (part4/5) by Nightlady (c) 1997 Disclaimers--please see part 1 "Impossible!" LaCroix exclaimed. "You know as well as I do that we cannot father children." "Not when you are functioning as vampires," Natalie spoke up, "but Nick had a brief time when he was functioning as a mortal. And my pregnancy is the result of that time." LaCroix stood completely still. He concentrated all of his senses on the woman that stood just a few feet away from him. Yes, there was indeed the soft, fluttering sound of an unborn heart emanating from her. He concentrated harder and was both stunned and amazed to find that there was indeed an aura of Nicholas connected to this sound. Nick saw the emotion that swept LaCroix's face. He was prepared to do anything necessary to protect Nat. "I must admit doctor, you have succeeded in completely amazing me." He turned to Nick. "It appears that congratulations are in order." Nick was still tense. "LaCroix, I will not allow any harm to come to either my wife or our child." "Nicholas, I am many things, most of them evil in your eyes, but one thing I have never been guilty of is knowingly harming an unborn child. I do not claim to understand how this has happened, but I can sense enough to know that you are indeed the father." LaCroix drew himself up to his full height. "You nor the good doctor need to fear me. I will not harm my grandchild... ," LaCroix raised an eyebrow, "or rather I should say grandchildren." "What!!" Nick and Nat exclaimed together. Nat looked at Nick, her eyes wide. Nick focused all of his concentration on the woman he loved. A smile crept across his face as he too heard the two distinct sounds of his children's hearts. "He's right, Nat. There is more than one heart beating." He quickly grabbed her as she swayed with shock at the unexpected news. Nat's mind was swimming with the idea of having twins! She looked up into Nick's face and the joy that was so clear in his expression, brought tears of happiness to her own eyes. Smiling, she leaned against him, savoring the strength of his body and in the arms he had protectively wrapped around her. Nick kissed the top of Nat's head and then looked back at LaCroix, who was watching with a faint expression of amusement on his face. "I will hold you to your word, 'Father'. I love Natalie, and I love the children that she carries." LaCroix nodded, but his face was solemn, "While you have nothing to fear from me, or any others of our kind here in Toronto, you must be very careful that this does not draw the attention of the Enforcers." He paused as he watched Nick's face harden in a determined expression. "I will do all I can to protect your Natalie and my grandchildren." Nat felt a shiver of fear race through her at the mention of the Enforcers. Nick had told her of them shortly after they had met. He had been unwilling to let her commit herself to what was a potentially fatal path without fully knowing of the dangers she might encounter. She had made the decision that Nick was worth the risk to herself, but dare she risk the lives of her unborn children? 'So long as Nick and I are together we will be able to withstand anything,' she thought, 'including Enforcers.' "Thank you for your support, LaCroix," she said facing him, "and for accepting these children as a part of your family." LaCroix looked into the clear, blue eyes of the woman if front of him. With a smile he reached out and lifted her hand to his lips. "I will do whatever I can to protect you, my dear, for Nicholas' sake as well as your own." She never broke eye contact with him and he realized that she was indeed an extremely remarkable mortal. Nicholas had chosen well in her. "Having said all of this, I will leave to two of you." He nodded and in a moment had disappeared through the skylight. Nick looked into Nat's face and saw the worry in her eyes. "I will never let any harm come to either you or our children." He promised her. "I don't think that the Enforcers will bother us. You have never posed a danger to the community and that is their main concern." The soft look of love and trust that filled her eyes made him determined to see that promise was never broken. "I know Nick. I'm not afraid." Nat suddenly smiled. "Twins, Nick can you believe we are going to have twins!" Nick laughed, "I love the sound of that word, almost as much as I love you." He found her lips, and kissed her with all of the love he held for her. To his great joy she met his kiss with fervor, her tongue seeking his to dual with ever-increasing passion. The feel of her breasts as she pressed herself against him fanned the fire that he always felt when near her to full flame. With a moan that was almost a growl, he lifted her and carried her to the bedroom. Once there, Nick removed the necklace he had given Nat and unzipped the dress Nat had worn for their wedding slipping it from her shoulders. Planting kisses along her neck, he undid the bra she wore, releasing her creamy, full breasts to his caressing hands. Nat sighed with pleasure as he gently kneaded them, lovingly rubbing her nipples as they hardened with desire. Turning her in his arms, he again found her lips and once again kissed her with skill and passion. He felt her hands as she unbuttoned his shirt, and pushed it open. The heat of her body against his bare chest caused the blood to rush through him. He could feel his hardness straining to escape its confinement. With a soft smile, Nat undid his belt and trousers. As they slipped down around his ankles, Nick stepped out of the slip on loafers he was wearing and out of the clothes. Kneeling in front of Nat, he carefully slid the pantyhose she wore and the tiny satin thong beneath them off of her. He felt her hands on his shoulders, for balance, as she stepped out of her shoes and the undergarments. Nude, she stood before him and Nick felt a lump form in his throat as he gazed upon the beauty ...of his wife. Softly, almost reverently he kissed the smooth, silky skin of her abdomen, and moving downward, trailed kisses into the warmth of her mound. Pausing, Nick leaned his head against her, and the sound of his children's heartbeats warmed him. Standing, he pulled her against him, his eyes filled with blood tears. "I love you, my soul, my heart, my beautiful wife." He whispered into her ear. Nat had felt as if she would explode with desire as Nick's skilled hands and lips had played along her skin. At Nick's whispered words, she felt her eyes fill with tears that matched his. They had been through so much, but now they would never again be apart. She WAS his wife, and she knew that no woman had ever loved her husband as much as she loved Nick. "Make love to me, my dearest husband," she whispered back. Nat felt herself lifted and softly placed on the bed. In only a moment, Nick's body was covering her own. She moaned with happiness as she felt his lips on her breasts, and opening her legs allowed him to slide his erect manhood into her. The coolness of him as he entered her excited her further. Wrapping her legs around Nick, she raised her hips and met his trusts with her own. As their bodies met and separated with ever-increasing speed, Nat felt herself rising on an ever-building wave of pleasure. She sensed, rather than saw when Nick's fangs dropped, and this time she offered him, not her wrist, but the soft creamy skin of her throat. Unafraid, she felt the brief, sharp sting as his fangs penetrated her skin and found the vein. Her climax over took her as Nick began to slowly drink from her. All of his love for her seemed to flow into her even as her own blood flowed into his mouth. With an incoherent cry, she clung to Nick, knowing that she would never again be alone, that they were indeed one forever. Nick tasted the honey sweetness of Natalie's blood and felt his body's release. He could feel the jetting pulses of his manhood as he emptied into he welcoming warmth. Her happiness, love and desire for him filled his mind and increased the physical pleasure that he felt. Mindful of the two tiny beings that were their children, Nick stopped feeding. He knew that he had taken less blood than would have been drawn for any standard blood test, and that by stopping, he insured not only his children's safety, but also Natalie's. Her body would quickly replace the little blood he required and they would be able to demonstrate their love for one another, if not every day then almost that frequently. As they relaxed in each other's arms, they murmured endearments and exchanged kisses as they slipped into sleep. (3 months later) Nat stood nervously in the middle of the main area of the loft. The soft sound of the lift filled her ears. 'What if I've made a mistake?' She worried. As the motor stopped she took a deep breath and watched as LaCroix entered the room. His unexpected phone call, requesting to see her alone, had caught her so off guard that she had agreed to it. Now, Nat hoped that she hadn't made a fatal mistake. LaCroix could tell from the sound of her heartbeat that Natalie was a bit frightened by being alone with him. He smiled slightly as he thought of how that would have pleased him only a few months earlier. Now, however, he wished that there were some way to convince her that he meant no harm to her. "I trust you are feeling well these days?" He cursed himself for the stiff sound of his question. Nat raised an eyebrow, "Yes, actually I feel wonderful. Would you like to sit down?" She motioned toward the conversation area and was relieve when LaCroix nodded and took a seat in one of the chairs. So far, his manner was anything but threatening, indeed he seemed to be somewhat unsure of himself. Nat could feel herself relaxing slightly. "I thank you for allowing me to visit with you on such short notice," LaCroix began, once he was seated. "But there are some things that I've recently become aware of which I must speak with you about." Hearing the sudden acceleration of her heart he quickly reassured her. "Nothing relating to the Enforcers or any other member of the community." Nat looked at LaCroix with open curiosity, "What things?" LaCroix took a deep breath, "I happen to come across an article which stated that insuring that a pregnant woman has an adequate intake of folic acid is vital to the developing baby's health, and I want to ask if you are taking any type of supplement to insure this." He fixed his blue eyes on the woman seated across from him. Nat felt her jaw drop open. It was several seconds before she could stammer "Fo..folic acid?" The look of concern that crossed LaCroix's face, coupled with his statement "You didn't know about this?", cause her to burst into uncontrollable laughter. "I'm...I'm sorry, LaCroix," she managed to gasp at last. "It's just that the LAST thing I every expected to have you say to me." LaCroix managed a small chuckle as he considered Natalie's statement. "Indeed, I believe that I can understand your feeling that way." "Thank you," Nat said, "and yes, I am on a supplement." The look of relief that crossed LaCroix's face almost triggered another bout of laughter. "Good, I am pleased to hear that. Now how about after the children arrive? I've heard sheepskin is very soothing to infants." Nat sat in wonder as LaCroix went on and on asking about the latest pregnancy and childcare information that he had gleaned from a variety of sources. It was not until he started questioning if she would be having an episiodomy that she finally held up her hand. "Uh, that's getting just a little too personal for my comfort, LaCroix." The hurt look on his face prompted her to add, "But I will take into consideration what you've told me before I make any decision on it." LaCroix smiled. "Thank you. I just want to be certain that my grandchildren are healthy," he added. Nat stood, "I understand and I am glad." To her surprise, she found that she meant that. End Part 4 comments etc, to cstar@pdq.net Love's Gift (part 5/5) by Nightlady (c) 1997 5 months later) Nat sighed as she struggled into a standing position. The large, frequently wiggling bulge that was her abdomen made navigating in close quarters difficult. She smiled as she caressed her abdomen. She was due in less than two weeks and, to be totally honest, she could hardly wait. The pregnancy had progressed uneventfully, unless you counted the surprise that LaCroix had turned into a real worrywart. Nat shook her head and giggled as she remembered the first time he had, ever so regally, inquired if she was getting an ample supply of folic acid. Nat could scarcely believe that she could feel as comfortable as she did around the elder vampire. Even Nick had become more accepting of LaCroix, a fact that Nat could tell greatly please him. After that first visit, LaCroix had taken to dropping by the loft after each of her doctor's visits to check on the progress of his grandchildren. Just over a month ago, he had brought word that the Enforcers had decided that since the unborn children were mortal, and since Nat had been of great help to the community in the past, there would be no action taken toward either her or Nick. There WERE times, during the past several months, when Nat thought she would scream if LaCroix asked one more concerned question. "And your daddy is not much better!" She said to her bulging abdomen. She smiled as she remembered how loving and thoughtful Nick had been during this pregnancy. He had spent hours, gently stroking the ever-growing bulge, while talking in soft tones to the unborn children within her. His concern and care was not directed solely toward the babies. Whenever she started to feel like a bloated blob, he always managed to do or say something that reassured her that in his eyes she was beautiful. The past seven months of their marriage had been the happiest time of her life. As she crossed to the door of her office, she looked around. This was her last night on the job until after the birth. Glancing at the clock, she frowned slightly. Nick was supposed to pick her up at 4am and he was late. A sudden flurry of kicks from her unborn children erased the frown from her face, and it was not a surprise that just moments later, the door opened to reveal Nick. Some how the babies always seemed to sense when Nick was nearby. Nick smiled as he watched Nat, caress her abdomen. "I see your early warning system is functioning," he said. "Sorry, I'm late, but we had a bit of paperwork that had to be finished before I could leave." Crossing to her he kissed her and laid his hand on her bulging abdomen. He loved to feel the tiny movements of his children, he loved, for the first time in many centuries his life. "You're here now and I am ready to go home." Nat said. She had felt unusually restless this night. She smiled as Nick took her arm and led her out into the warm, mid summer night. The scent of blooming flowers in the small contemplative garden filled the air. All seemed calm and quiet, and it was with a bit of a shock that Nat suddenly realized that liquid was running down the sides of her legs. "Umm, Nick," she said. "My water just broke." Nick stopped in his tracks, the saline scent strong in his nostrils. As he looked at Nat, her eyes suddenly widened. "And that was no Braxton-Hicks contraction either." She said. "That was the real thing!" Nick lifted her in his arms and all but flew to the Caddy. Since the top was down, he was able to seat her inside, without having to open the door, and then rushed around to the driver's side. In seconds they were headed for the hospital. Nick made the trip to Mercy General in record time. As he pulled up in front of the hospital, he could feel his excitement growing. His soul nearly burst with love as he helped Nat out of the car. She smiled up at him and held onto his arm as another contraction hit her. "Let's get you inside," he said and lifted her into his arms. Nat didn't argue with him, the contraction was stronger than the one she'd had in the parking lot. She wrapped her arms around his neck and laid her head against his shoulder. "Nick, it's almost dawn how are you going to manage?" She looked into his eyes with concern. She wanted, no needed, him with her but knew that he would have to be well fed to control himself during the birth. Nick kissed her forehead, "Don't worry about me. I have several bottles in the trunk. I was concerned that this might happen and there is no way that I am going to miss our children's birth." Nat relaxed in his arms as the contraction ended. "I'm glad. I can't do this without you, Nick." "You won't have to, my love." Nick smiled. "You're stuck with me Natalie Lambert Knight." He carried her through the doors of the hospital. It only took a few minutes to get Nat situated in a room. Her doctor had arranged for them to have a room with only a narrow window that had heavy drapes on it so Nick would not have to worry about the sunlight. Nick excused himself for a few minutes while Nat was changing into her hospital gown and, going back to the Caddy, moved it to a parking space in the underground garage that was accessible with out having to go outdoors. He also drank three of the six bottles of blood he had place in the trunk earlier. He returned to the room just as Nat was settling in the bed. Nick spent the next several hours, wiping Nat's face with a cool cloth, feeding her ice chips, massaging her back and generally giving her all of the support she needed. He held her gently and managed to refrain from laughing when she turned to him at one point and said, "Nick, I think I've changed my mind about doing this. Let's just go home and come back tomorrow or the next day and have the babies then." Instead he kissed her and suggested that perhaps that would not be the wisest thing to do. It was almost noon when the last stage of the birthing process began. With Nick lifting her shoulders and supporting her with his touch and words, Nat took a deep breath and began to push. It only took three good pushes, before the air was filled with the health wail of a newborn. "Congratulations! It's a boy!" Her doctor announced. Nat felt her eyes fill with tears, "You have a son, Nick." She looked at her husband's face and saw such love there that she couldn't speak. Nick kissed her, "No, WE have a son. Thank you, Nat." He lifted her again as another contraction hit. "Come on, Nat just at little more," he encouraged. Nat grunted with the effort, and when the wail of a second newborn was heard, she collapsed against Nick in relief. "And a girl. One of each!" The doctor said smiling. Nick held Nat, overwhelmed by their good fortune. He could hear the nurses calling out Apgar scores or 9.7 for each of the babies. "I love you so much." He whispered to Nat. "Here you go Daddy," a nurse said as she placed a small, blanket wrapped bundle into Nick's arms. "Your son would like to make your acquaintance." Nick looked down at the baby in his arms and found a pair of tiny, blue eyes looking back at him. With a sense of awe, Nick placed a kiss on the tiny forehead. Holding the child so that Nat could also see him, Nick noted that the reddish hair curling on the infant's head was almost the same shade as Nat's. "I think he has your features." Nat said softly. "And your coloring," Nick added. Looking at the child, Nick again kissed him, "Hello, Richard. Welcome to the world." As a second nurse approached with the other baby, Nick watched as she placed their daughter into Nat's arms. Nat gently stroked the baby's face before kissing her. "And a welcome to you too, Tamsyn." Nick was pleased to see that Tamsyn appeared to have Nat's features, although the shock of blonde hair indicated that she would have his coloring. After they had traded bundles with one another and each had the opportunity to snuggle both of their children for a few minutes, Nick left to follow the babies to the nursery. There they would be weighed and measured and given their first baths. Once he had seen that the twins were safely delivered to the nursery, Nick slipped down to the Caddy and hastily drank another bottle of blood. Returning to the maternity floor, he first checked back at the nursery. As he arrived there, the pediatrician that Nat had chosen was just getting ready to give the twins a quick check up. After getting the doctor's assurance that he would come by Nat's room and let them know the results, Nick headed down the hall to find his wife. As he entered Nat's room, she was lying in bed resting from the events of the morning. Hearing him enter she turned to smile at him and reached out her hand. Nick went to her side and leaning over her kissed her softly. "So, how big are they?" Nat asked. Nick beamed with pride. "Richard is 6lbs. 5oz and 20 1/2 inches long. Tamsyn is 6lbs. 3 oz. and 20 inches long." "That's a nice size for twins," Nat said happily. "Yes, it is", Dr. Marcos, the pediatrician, said from the doorway. "I am happy to report that you have two extremely healthy babies. Unless something totally unforeseen occurs, you can take them home tomorrow morning." Nick and Nat smiled happily at the doctor. "How soon can I have them in here with me?" Nat asked. "The nurse should be bringing them down to you in just a few minutes. I'll see you in my office in two weeks for," he paused. "Have you decided on names yet?" "Richard and Tamsyn," Nick said. "For Richard's and Tamsyn's first check up," Dr. Marcos finished. With a wave he left. As he was going out the door, a nurse arrived with the babies. The rest of the afternoon was spent holding, cuddling, feeding and changing diapers. Nat laughed when Richard, who was having his diaper changed by his daddy, decided to wet a bit more and managed to hit Nick squarely in the face with it. "That'll teach you to keep a fold of diaper over him at all times," she teased. Nick only wiped his face and grinned. They also called those people they knew would want to know of the births. Grace and Tracy stopped by to visit and Tracy offered to drive Nat and the twins home in the morning, an offer that was gladly accepted. Reese telephoned, as did Nat's sister in law, Sara. As the sun set for the day, Nick left to go to the loft. There he would change his clothes, feed Sydney and himself, and bring Nat a nightgown as well has clothes for both her and the twins to wear home. Nat was expecting Nick to return any minute, when she looked up from where she stood watching Richard and Tamsyn sleep. In the doorway of her room stood LaCroix. "May I come in?" The aristocratic vampire inquired. "Yes, of course. Nat replied. "Nick said he'd left a message on your answering machine." LaCroix nodded, and entered the room. He stopped just inside the doorway, but his eyes were drawn to the two cribs across the room from him. "You are looking well. I trust that the children are also well?" Nat smiled, she could see how much LaCroix wanted to see the babies up close. She also realized that he was stay away from them until she gave him permission, a gesture that she did appreciate. "They are fine. Why don't you come over here and have a look at them." LaCroix crossed to where Nat stood and gazed down at the two tiny infants. After a moment he nodded again. "They are lovely," he said softly. "Almost as lovely as their mother." Nick said from behind them. Nat smiled and leaned against Nick when he walked over and hugged her from behind. After glancing at Nick, she turned to LaCroix. "Would you like to hold them?" LaCroix looked at the woman in front of him. "I would be honored." Nat indicated that he should sit in the large, comfortable chair that was a part of the room's furnishings. As he sat, she picked up Richard and Nick picked up Tamsyn. Nick placed his daughter in the hands of the man who he'd both hated and loved as a father for so many centuries. "This is Tamsyn Fleur deBrabant Knight," Nick said. "And this is her big brother by about two minutes, Richard Lucien deBrabant Knight," Nat said as she laid the sleeping baby in LaCroix's other arm. "Rather large names for two such small babies," LaCroix said looking at them. Raising his eyes to Nicholas and Natalie he added, "But I have no doubts that they will grow to fit them." He looked at Nicholas, "Thank you." Nick nodded. "We wanted them to have the names of people important to us." Nick had remembered his own mortal father Thomas by giving his daughter a feminine Welsh version of the name. As Tamsyn awoke and began fussing, Nat reached to take her from LaCroix. "You are welcome to come and see them whenever you wish. All children need grandparents, and you are the only one they have." "I will not abuse your generosity." LaCroix said as he handed the baby to her. Several hours after LaCroix had taken his leave, Nick stood with Nat watching the twins sleep. He kissed Nat on the cheek and turned her to face him. "Nat, when I look at them I can't believe that they are real. They are so beautiful and I love them more than anyone or thing in this world, except you." He lifted her hand to his lips. "To me, they are love's gift to us." Nat felt her eyes brimming with tears of happiness. She didn't speak, but instead reached up and wrapped her arms around her husband's neck. As she felt him encircle her with his she knew a peace that she had never dreamed of existing. The End. Thanks for reading this far! All comments, etc may be sent to me at the addresses below.
