She glanced down the street as she heard a car coming-- but no, it's wasn't her husband. She looked back at the sky. She was worried. She was _always_ worried. Don had such a dangerous job. Oh, she knew he loved his work, and she was _awfully_ proud of him, but still... sometimes, like now, she got this terrible feeling in her heart and she wondered if he would get to be there to watch Jenny grow up. As if she had read Myra's mind, the door opened. "Mom? Is Daddy home, yet?" Myra turned and smiled at her daughter. "No, honey. He's been very busy, and he said they might be giving him a new case." "You mean that vampire thing?" Myra looked at her daughter in amused surprise. Sometimes she forgot how smart Jenny was. Of course she would have seen the story on the news. "Maybe. The police are very worried about catching whoever is doing this, so they're going to put their best people on it." "And that means Daddy!" Jenny crowed happily. "And that means Daddy," Myra echoed softly. "Now go get ready for bed. I'll send Daddy up to kiss you good-night when he gets home." Jenny was halfway up the stairs when she suddenly gasped, "LOOK!" Myra whirled in alarm, then smiled as she saw what her daughter was pointing at. A brilliant shooting star streaked across half the sky before disappearing. "Make a wish," she prompted Jenny. Jenny quickly closed her eyes to wish. Myra traced the trail of the star with her eyes. , she thought impulsively, Just then, headlights filled the front yard as the car turned into the driveway. "Daddy!" Jenny yelled, and raced to the car as the engine was cut and Don Schanke stepped out. Don picked Jenny up and swung her around, then set her down with an "Oohf!". "You are definitely getting too big for that!" he exclaimed. Jenny just giggled. "No, I'm not!" "Well," Don said as he kissed her cheek, "maybe not for a few years, yet." Myra watched with love as her husband and daughter laughed together. "So, what's the news?" she asked as she fell in step beside him and they entered the house. "Yeah, they handed me the case. But you will _never_ believe who they set up as my partner! Nick the Knightmare!" "The loner you're always complaining about?" "Yeah, can you believe it? That guy is about as friendly as a snake! At least it's only for a few shifts." Far above, the stars stood watch over the world, and winked knowingly. End "Eternal nights too short, How quickly melt away, With all the love we shared once, Forever in a day." ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
