"Please be there, please be there," she muttered under her breath, turning her head away from the noisy stranger. She heard a click. "This is Nick Knight, I'm either sleeping..." Natalie wanted to scream. He had to be there, didn't he. He was a vampire, and it was daytime. She waited, impatiently, for the message to finish and the beep to sound. "Nick," she tried not to sound anxious, "Pick up if you're there." Nothing. "Nick?" Again, nothing. She pulled the phone closer to her mouth. "Nick! If you're there, pick up now!" The voice on the other end of the phone had the bewildered tone of someone awakened from a deep sleep. "Nat?" "Nick, thank God you're there." Natalie's words spilled out quickly. Then she realized what she'd said. "Sorry." "No problem. I thought you were in Texas." The guard cleared his throat. "One minute." "I am in Texas. I'm in Plano. Main police station. I need you to post bail." "Bail? For what?" "Nevermind, Nick." "But surely it's a mistake. Let me talk to someone there, see if I can get a little professional courtesy established." Natalie could feel the color rising in her face. "I have to go. Please, Nick?" "Of course." At that point the guard pushed the disconnect lever. "Times up." Natalie's mouth drew into a thin line. She slapped the receiver into the man's hand, and headed back towards her cell. She hoped Nick would come through quickly with the bail. She was in no more of a mood to stay here in jail than to explain to Nick why she was here in the first place. But, given the choice between the two, she realized she'd rather remain locked up. ### Natalie waited to hear her name called. She passed the time trying to remain out of the reach of an overly attentive cellmate named Bubbles. Once Bubbles was gone, she turned to reviewing the musculature and innervation of the hand, arm, head and neck to pass the time. After all that, she was still left in the lockup. Every once in a while, a new person would be tossed into the cell. Natalie tried to watch what was happening without making eye contact. She realized that was her mistake with Bubbles. Eye contact. In ones and twos, they'd come and go. Meanwhile, Natalie was beginning to feel a biological need that she knew she'd rather not have to assuage as public a venue as the cell. So, trying to again concentrate on anything but her growing discomfort, she held it. It was with only a certain amount of relief that she stood when she heard her name called. "This way, Lambert." The officer was a stern looking woman. "Is it at all possible that I can use a rest room?" The woman gave a frown. "You had facilities in the holding pen." Nat summoned her professional demeanor. "I'm certain that you could be open to liability, were I to catch something from that fixture in its unclean condition." "What are you, a lawyer?" "Coroner." Natalie figured this woman must have some soft spot for her profession, because she led Natalie into a facility en route to wherever they were headed. The guard led Natalie into an interrogation room. There he was, seated at the table, his back to the door. Nick. She could feel the adrenaline levels rising in her system, her heart raced. The flee reaction had taken hold, and she was ready to turn on her heel and head back, even if it meant returning to the cell. The only thing blocking her was the guard. And she was a pretty effective blocker. Realizing that there was no way out, Natalie drew in a deep breath and took a step forward. "Hi, Nick." Nick looked up at her, an 'oh so cute' smile on his face. "Sorry it took me so long." "I thought you were just going to bail me out." She took a seat across from him, still feeling the burrowing eyes of the guard, still standing behind her. "I had to wait until it got dark enough to travel down here." "All I needed was the bail money." He reached out for her hand. "But I wanted to be sure you were okay." She raised her other hand up, shielding her face, the blush that was again coloring her cheeks. "I'm fine. Am I getting out of here?" "That's all been arranged." He looked back at the guard. "I spoke with Judge Cheeseman. He's seen that all charges were dropped." "I'll need to verify that," said the Officer. She went over to the wall and picked up a phone. "Of course." Nick kept that damn half-smile that Natalie was finding more than a little smug at this point. Why couldn't he have just done as she'd asked. It would have made her life so much easier. ### Thanks to the Nuts for the ideas and moral support. And to Texas, Alabama, and Georgia for passing laws to give me such ideas. "I don't suppose you want to tell me your side of the story." "You probably heard theirs, right?" Nick nodded. "Possession of an illegal item, I believe." Natalie shook her head, letting her hair cover her face. "I'm just embarrassed, Nick. Can we not go over this now." He stepped in front of her and pulled he hair back to where he could see her. "As you wish," he replied, planting a light kiss on her forehead. ### The rest of the trip was in silence. Natalie couldn't sit still. And Nick kept gazing over at her every chance he got, somehow enjoying her discomfort. As he opened the car for her back at her hotel, she mumbled something he couldn't quite understand. "I didn't quite catch that." Through gritted teeth she replied. "I said, I'm going to kill Grace when I get back." "Poor Grace. What'd she do?" Natalie walked swiftly to the door. Nick trailed a step behind, his black duster flapping in the light breeze. "Must have been pretty terrible, if it warrants death." Nick pressed on, hoping for more. Natalie stomped on to the front desk of the hotel. "I'm in room 239. I've locked myself out of my room. Can you give me a new key?" The deskclerk looked up from her computer screen. "I'll need to see some I.D." "That's locked in my room, also." The woman went back to her typing. "I'll have to wait for a manager to come escort you to your room." Natalie pinched the bridge of her nose between her thumb and forefinger. "Whatever. But please, make it quick." "You don't need to see her I.D." It was Nick's voice. Nick's voice sounding very calm and soothing. Natalie looked at him. He had the woman mesmerized. "I don't need to see her I.D.," repeated the woman. "You can give us a new room key," he looked down at the woman's name badge, "Jody." The woman nodded. "I can give you a new room key." Nick continued. "These aren't the droids you're looking for." "Excuse me?" asked the woman. He flinched as Natalie's blow connected with his shoulder. "The key will be fine." She nodded dumbly and handed a key over to Nick. Natalie waited until they got to the elevator lobby to speak. "Thanks for that." "What?" "The hypnotizing, the key." Nick thought it in his best interest given Natalie's day so far not to let her know he actually hadn't hypnotized the woman. Now was not the time for such a disclosure. ### As soon as they entered the room Natalie wet down a washcloth with cold water, and laid down on the bed, putting it over her eyes. "So, are you going to tell me now?" "Do I have to?" Nick took a seat on the bed beside Natalie. "You might feel better." She nodded her head 'no.' "I'll feel like an idiot." "Try me." "Ok, as long as you promise not to laugh." "Promise." "Cross your heart?" Natalie raised a corner of the washcloth and peeked up at him. Nick frowned. "Do I have to? That hurts." Natalie let the cloth drop back over her face. "A promise is enough." "I promise." "Ok. Well, when I got her, and started unpacking, I found a few items I don't recall putting in my luggage. When the room service guy knocked on the door bringing up lunch, I was trying to decide what to do with it. Not sure, I stuck it in my jacket pocket." "And that go you arrested?" "No, but then he left, and I realized he'd brought me the wrong thing for dinner. I hurried out of the room, trying to catch him. In my haste, I forgot my room key." "And that's criminal?" Natalie took another swat, this one hitting him in the leg. "Let me finish." "Ok, so I'm out in the hallway, no room key. No I.D." "But an item in your pocket?" "Yes. So, I head down to the lobby to ask for a duplicate key. As I step out of the elevator, I'm run into by a kid. Little do I realize, he's being pursued by five cops." "For what?" "I don't know for what, Nick. Do you want to hear the story or not." "I won't interrupt." "Thank you. Now, there I was, bowled over on the ground. As one nice officer helps me up, the," she paused, "item fell to the ground." "He politely informed that such things aren't legal in Texas, and I was arrested and booked right alongside the juvenile they'd been pursuing." "And Grace dies because?" Natalie groaned. "Grace dies because she must have packed the item, judging by the note left behind." Natalie felt the bed shift as Nick got up. "Is this the note?" She sprung off the bed, and reached for the slip of paper. "Give me that!" Nick held the paper above Natalie's reach. "'A toy in case you miss your blond boy toy,'" he read aloud. Natalie stopped trying to grab for the paper. "Fine. Just remember, it was Grace." "Grace packed you an item?" "Yes, Nick." "A vibrator?" He drew out the word. Natalie's hands covered her face. She nodded. Nick started laughing. "It's not funny," she protested. Nick laughed louder, wiping a blood tear from his cheek. "I'm sorry." "When this gets out, I'll never live it down." Nick stole behind her, and wrapped his arms around her. "It won't get around." "Promise?" "I promise. And again, I apologize." "But you didn't do anything wrong." Nick smiled. "Maybe one little thing." "What's that?" she asked, sinking back into his embrace. "I never realized vibrators were illegal in Texas, or I never would have packed the thing."
