Natalie just doesn't want to spend any time with me anymore. And couldn't she have given me a ride? She knows the Caddy is in the shop and her new pills give me vertigo so I can't fly." He continued to mumble as he turned off the street to trudge through the park. As he crossed an open area, he noticed a strange blue light in the trees to one side of the clearing. He glanced at his watch: 5:13 AM. He still had an hour or so to make it back home before daybreak; he could investigate. It was probably nothing, he knew, but he pushed through the underbrush anyway. The thorns of a wild rose bush tugged at his pant leg, and he snarled as he pulled away the branch. They were brand new trousers! Imported from Italy! He bent down, the light forgotten in his annoyance over the snags. He poked ineffectually at the little loops of thread, trying to push them back into the weave. A blue light bathed him. "Thanks," he said absentmindedly. "I can see bet--" He suddenly realized that he wasn't alone. Slowly straitening up, he saw several small gray beings amongst the trees. He sniffed the air and noted that they had a strange smell -- like hot chocolate and nutmeg almost -- definitely not the smell of mammalian blood. In the dim blue light, their grayish, thin bodies were almost translucent, with the outlines of what he presumed to be organs showing through their unclothed skin. Their large eyes in their oversized heads were all pupil, reflecting back a distorted rounded image of himself. "Uh...hi," Nick said, glancing behind him to see several more gray creatures. "Can I uh... help you?" The one being directly in front of him cocked his head to the side and held out his hand. Nick took a step backwards, only to be patted forward by numerous hands on his back. Nick decided that he had had enough. He bent his knees to leap into the sky and got only two feet off the ground before nausea set in. He thumped heavily to the ground, smacking his head on a rock. The last thing he saw, as the world darkened around him, was a gray, four-fingered hand reaching toward his face. ******** Nick awoke to a horrific buzzing. Rolling over, he knocked the alarm clock off the bed. Noting the time, 6:10 AM, he fell out of bed onto the floor. His limbs shook and he felt as if he had just drunk one of Natalie's more noxious "health drinks." After a few moments, he identified the buzzing as his intercom. He half-walked, half-dragged himself down the stairs to the intercom and security screen. After pressing the button to turn on the camera, he poked at the intercom button. "What?" he croaked. "Detective Knight? This is Officer Ron McDonald from the Toronto PD." Nick looked at the image and saw a young, clean cut officer. The officer continued, "We found your wallet in the park." Nick looked over to the table where he normally put his wallet when he came in. It wasn't there. Neither were his keys. "What was I doing in the park?" he wondered, and it suddenly came back to him. The light, the snags, the ... aliens. "Detective?" came the voice from the intercom. "Uh, yeah," Nick said shakily, "Come on up." He pressed the buzzer that unlocked the door, then stumbled backwards to collapse in a kitchen chair. Aliens. He'd been abducted by aliens. That was the only explanation. His wallet and keys must have fallen out when he knocked himself out. How long had he been gone? What day was it? Had he missed work? How had be gotten home? Who would believe him? Where were his keys? His thoughts were interrupted by the opening of the door by the young officer. The young man looked at him in concern. "Are you all right, Detective?" He asked after a moment. "Were you mugged? Assaulted? Should I call for medical assistance?" "No, no," Nick said, not knowing what he could tell this fresh-faced officer. "I just must have dropped it when I was walking home." He paused. "Did you have any reports of anything unusual happening in the park this morning?" "No, not this morning," the officer answered. "Yesterday we had a bunch of UFO reports, though. Just a bunch of nuts and street people, though. And some farmers in town for a show." "Yesterday..." Nick trailed off. So it had been yesterday that he had been abducted. He was missing an entire day's worth of memories. Wasn't that one of the signs of an abduction? Missing time? He thought he'd heard that on one of those sci-fi television shows. He hoped he hadn't been ... probed. He squirmed in his chair, trying to detect any discomfort, but couldn't tell. His whole body ached, really. "Detective Knight? Are you sure you wouldn't like me to call someone?" Officer McDonald asked, his forehead wrinkled in concern. "No, that's fine." Nick stood up and took his wallet from the man's hand. He began herding the officer toward the door. "I'm fine, really. You just woke me up." Nick finally got the officer out the door and locked it behind him. Now he had to figure out what to do. Who should he call? LaCroix? No, he would only mock him for fantasies and insist that it was due to the pressure of his self-imposed guilt. Janette? No, she would tell him to stop with his silly games and act like a grown vampire. Natalie? No, she, a scientist, would never believe him. Schanke? No, he wouldn't believe him either, and would just laugh. There was no one he could call. No one he could tell who would believe him. He was alone. ******** End Part 01/02 --Jessica/Kusine ===== --------- kusine@yahoo.com --------- http://home.earthlink.net/~kusine/ http://www.angelfire.com/oh2/russiancostume/ ***I REPORT ALL SPAMMERS TO THEIR ISPs*** Nick's Adventures With the Little People 02/02 Complaints, compliments, and chocolate may be sent to kusine@yahoo.com. Though still disturbed by his abduction, he found that he thought of it less often, and only relived it in his dreams. He had checked some books out of the library, but they had not been of much help. All of the scars and implants that they suggested he look for would have healed over within hours of his abduction. So he had no choice but to ignore the entire experience. He threaded his way through they gyrating dancers, human and vampire alike. As he arrived at the bar, he felt a familiar heavy hand on his shoulder. "Nicholas! How delightful to see you here!" LaCroix said cheerfully -- too cheerfully for Nick's taste. "Slumming, are we?" "Well, you're here," Nick replied nastily, pulling his shoulder from under his vampire father's hand. "That's not very nice! Not when I was going to tell you about a strange thing that happened to me." LaCroix's pale lips formed a pout. "I wanted to *share*" "What?" Nick asked testily as he sat on a bar stool. "What's wrong with you? Been in the curare again?" LaCroix tsk-ed at his wayward son and sat on a stool next to him. "I saw a wonder and all you do is spread foulness in your wake." He paused and looked despairing. "I just don't know what to do with you." "Nothing," Nick snapped. "Leave me alone." "Now, now, Nicholas. You would not have come here if you did not want company," the older vampire pointed out. Nick sighed. "Fine. What was your 'wonder'?" "A few days ago," LaCroix began, "Just before dawn, I saw the most beautiful light in the sky. It was blue. As blue as the skies I remember from the summers of my childhood. Instead of looking cold as blue can, it seemed warm and loving. I wanted to go to it, but I could not. I stood transfixed by wonder. I could not see from where it came, but it lit up part of the park near your loft. It stayed for several minutes, then faded away till I was not sure I had seen it at all." Nick stared at his maker in shock. Was LaCroix telling the truth? He most assuredly didn't seem to be himself. He was cheerful and playful. Normally, the older vampire would have stalked off or made a biting reply to Nick's display of temper. Nick had only rarely seen LaCroix ... rhapsodize. To say nothing of the fact that this matched up with his abduction... "What was it?" Nick asked nervously. "If I knew, I would find it again," LaCroix replied, and sighed. "It was as beautiful as ... a rose." It was too bizarre. Nick had to leave. He mumbled some excuse to LaCroix, who ignored him, seemingly entranced by his memories. Nick pushed his way into the night, and fled. ******* As soon as he was sure his child was out of the club, LaCroix stopped staring off into space and let the beatific look slide off of his face. He did, however, indulge in a small smile. He made his way to the back of the club, to the entrance to the subterranean apartments. Ignoring the darkness, he made his way through the darkness to a door with a line of soft blue light under it. Opening the door, he was greeted by a wafting breeze of chocolate and nutmeg scent. "You did wonderfully, my friends. My son has been humbled," he told the seven beings in the room. The gray aliens smiled with their thin mouths and waved their mugs of hot chocolate at the vampire. "Perhaps we can do this again sometime. Rosewell was ... entertaining, but this was a more personal sort of fun," LaCroix continued. "Now, you're sure you will not stay longer? Janette does not begrudge you the room." The beings shook their heads as one. "Well, then. I will take my leave of you. Please," he implored, "visit me again when you are next in the galaxy." He closed the door and shook his head. Alien teenagers. Silly in their addiction to their strangely spiced drinks, but useful nonetheless. He hadn't had as much fun with Nick since the incident with the dog. LaCroix smiled. It was so much fun to play with his children. ******* The End. ******* --Jessica/Kusine ===== --------- kusine@yahoo.com --------- http://home.earthlink.net/~kusine/ http://www.angelfire.com/oh2/russiancostume/ ***I REPORT ALL SPAMMERS TO THEIR ISPs***
