She sat tall on her knees and looked at her father very matter-of-factly. It was obvious she had something on her mind. "What is it, mon petite Fleur?" "Daddy, how did you and mommy get married? Did you fall in love in kindergarten?" Smiling, he thought back on how everything got started. He tried to find a place to begin. For all those times you stood for me, For all the truth that you made me see, For all the joy you brought to my life, For all the wrong that you made right, For every dream you made come true, For all the love I found in you, I'll be forever thankful baby. You're the one that helped me up - -never let me fall. You're the one who saw me through - -through it all. [ I was rolled into the morgue dead. Nat found me and wanted to learn more. ] "Well honey, I met mommy when she was at work." "You mean in her class at college?" "No, a long time ago when mommy worked for the police department in Toronto." "Oh okay, then you got married?" "We didn't get married right away. We'd only just met." [ Plus I was a vampire which made any relationship impossible. ] You were my strength when I was weak, You were my voice when I couldn't speak, You were my eyes when I couldn't see, You saw the best there was in me. Lifted me up when I couldn't reach, You gave me faith because you believed. I'm everything I am because you loved me. "After I met mommy, she and I worked together for five years. We were just friends . . ." ". . . Friends? You mean friends like me and Molly?" " That's right, just like you and Molly." [ Nat tried to cure me and constantly put up with my obsessive guilt and my many bottles of backsliding. ] " Before mommy and I could get married I had a few bad habits I had to stop. [ Like drinking blood.]" " Did you smoke like Marvin's dad ? " " Smoke? [ Only in sunlight. ] No, but it was like that a little. " " So then what happened ?" [ Well, I found out Janette became mortal by being loved. At first I didn't figure I'd be able to stop like Janette did so I refused to try Janette's way. Nat convinced me that she wasn't afraid of me and wanted this to work. ] " Mommy helped cure me. She took really good care of me like she does when you get a cold. " You gave me wings and made me fly, You touched my hand like you touched the sky. I lost my faith you gave it back to me, You said no star was out of reach. You stood by me and I stood tall, I had your love ... I had it all. I'm grateful for each day you gave me. Baby, I don't know that much -- -- but I know this much is true, I was blessed because I was loved by you. [ She did cure me, then I got a surprise visit from a very angry Janette. I'd stolen her mortality and then used the same means to regain my own. She wanted me back in the fold but when she saw how happy we were together she let me go. I still love her for that. But the problems weren't over. I hadn't been mortal for eight hundred years, I was a little confused. Nat had to keep me from doing stupid things I could do when I was a vampire . . .] " Daddy? Did you fall asleep? You had a silly look on your face, like you were dreaming." " No honey, I wasn't sleeping. I was thinking about mommy and me. " " Did you marry mommy after you were cured? " " No, first we dated like grownups do. " [ Nat wanted to make sure I wasn't only cured temporarily. She was still afraid of Lacroix. ] " I took mommy out to dinner for Valentine's Day and asked her to marry me." [ She was scared to death of Azure -- it was definitely not her favorite restaurant but it seemed apropos for the occasion. I'd bought the entire restaurant for the evening. I ordered a bottle of the finest Champaign and offered her a glass and a small box. The ring I gave her had belonged to my mother, she'd given it to me in hopes I'd bestow it upon my wife. Janette brought it back to me on New Years Eve and told me it should be Nat's. I didn't know if I should cry or laugh. I cried. Janette walked out of my life ten minutes to midnight and I have not seen her since. Nat smiled at the beautiful ring and was more than a little shocked. Of course she said yes and we made plans for an outdoor wedding around her birthday in June. ] You were always there for me, The tender wing that carried me. What happened after you asked her to marry you? " " She said yes. We decided to get married around her birthday. She looked so beautiful -- like a princess. It was the happiest day of my life. " " Did you look like a prince? " [ No, actually I looked like an eight hundred year old knight who'd finally found happiness. ] " Yes honey, I looked like a prince. Your mommy made me a prince. She climbed off the couch and went back to playing with her brother on the floor. When she heard the garage door open, Cindy ran to greet her mom. Nick continued to sit on the couch remembering his new life. [ ' Nick, you're going to be a dad.' __ ' It's a girl ! ' __ ' May I present Cynthia Donna Knight ! ' __ ' It's a boy ! ' __ ' May I present Richard Nicholas Knight ! ' . . .] " Mommy ! Mommy ! Daddy told me all about how you got married. He told me you looked like a princess. " Nick looked up at his wife and offered a wry smile. Nat picked up his hand and laid it on her abdomen. Kissing him, she smiled and said : " Monsieur de Brabant you are going to be a daddy ! !
