"Technology in the Wrong Hands is a Dangerous Thing" (01/02) by S. Clark Natalie scooped up the last bite of cheesecake, but hesitated before popping it into her mouth. "You're kidding, right? Not Jody from the lab." Grace laughed and dabbed at the corners of her mouth with a napkin. "The very same. Last year, during the Christmas party." Natalie savored her last bite of dessert, and followed it with a deep swig of coffee. "I'm surprised she didn't lose her job over that." "I don't think they wanted to be that strict. But I do know she was banned from using the copier." "I'm not sure that's such a punishment." Natalie thought back to her own battles with the evil machine. "I've heard of people who've done something like that, photocopied their face or other parts..." The way Grace started laughing confirmed to Natalie that this had definitely been a case of 'other parts'. "I didn't know anyone ever got caught doing it." "The girl would have been ok if she hadn't collated, I think. She left behind a few copies." "How'd the recognize it was her?" Natalie was still a little skeptical at this point. "I guess she'd made the original, then written a note on it. Something about 'so-and-so could kiss her,' you know, and she signed it." Natalie burst out laughing at the thought. "But," Grace continued, "she didn't grab all of the copies in the little bins. Someone found one the next day, and turned it in." "Poor kid. I suppose that's why they've discouraged any drinking while at work parties." "I'm sure that incident didn't help." The waitress, Micki, came over to the table. "More coffee, ladies?" Natalie glanced in her cup. "I think I have enough. Grace?" Grace waved her hand over her cup. "None for me, either, thanks." Micki left the bill and went on to take care of other customers. "You know Nat, although I wouldn't suggest such a stunt for your superiors, something like that might get the attention of a certain blond fellow we both know." "Grace!" Nat couldn't believe her friend would even suggest such a thing. Still, she thought about it for half a second, and then couldn't believe she'd even thought about such a thing. "I'm sure he'd enjoy it." A thousand thoughts ran through Nat's head, all related to Nick, and how best to explain their relationship to Grace. "Grace, we're just friends." "Mmm hmm," replied the other woman. "You just keep telling yourself that. Someday you might even believe it...no one else does." Natalie put down enough to cover the tab and got up. "We're going to be late if we don't get moving." Grace didn't comment further on her suggestion, but it did get Nat to start wondering. Would Nick actually appreciate something like that? Or, would it just make him withdraw. She never knew how he was going to react to her overtures. She'd tried subtle, only to be ignored. She'd tried overt, only to have him go running from the room. And anytime he started anything, he quickly ended it, too, apologizing for his actions. All in all, they might as well be just friends. Nothing else was happening, physically, at least, between them. ### Later that night, it just so happened that Nat ended up in the copy room. Usually one of the lab techs did the administrative work. Tonight, though, they were short staffed, with only one tech and one trainee. Natalie let out a little giggle. She wondered 'what if?' She went to the door and peeked into the hallway. Empty. Closing the door she noticed it had a lock that she could lock from the inside. Surely it would take someone at least a minute to unlock the door. Plenty of warning. She held her breath and turned the latch, hearing the lock 'click' into place. With relative privacy ensured, she returned to the machine. Sizing up the thing...she didn't really like the thought of sitting on it. She wondered it it'd support her weight, and she didn't really want to explain it to someone if the glass broke. Of course, then came the whole issue of medical attention and explaining the cuts. No, sitting was most definitely out. But then she got another idea. She grabbed a chair that was sitting in a corner of the room. If she knelt on that, she could lean foreword, and make a copy of her breasts. That decided, Nat went and fetched the chair. Then she slipped off her labcoat and jacket, unbuttoned her blouse and unfastened her bra. She was glad that today she'd decided on wearing one that fastened in the front. Then, leaning on the glass, she took a copy. She felt a little foolish as the lights flashed under the glass. But couldn't help but giggle as she saw the results. But she felt the copy was a little dark. Just what those two circles were wasn't so readily apparent. So she adjusted the contrast, and made a second copy. In this one the objects that had been copied were unmistakable. She quickly dressed again. Then, just as she was ready to leave, she noticed the odd-shaped smudges that she'd left on the glass. Nat quickly buffed it with her lab coat, made sure she'd grabbed both copies, and headed for the door. As she was leaving the room, someone else was entering. Nat didn't recognize the person which was just as well. Her own thoughts were causing her to blush furiously. She wouldn't want to have to try to explain to someone why that might be the case, as she exited the copy room. ### Nat grabbed an empty file jacket from her desk. She wrote up the paperwork so it looked like it was a case assigned to Nick, and slipped in the copy, the light one. She'd shredded the dark one, just to be safe. They'd made plans to meet for lunch. At that point she'd hand him the file, acting like it was just any file, but making sure he'd check out the 'results.' She couldn't wait to see his reaction. Actually, she hoped it'd be a reaction. Anything. Natalie settled back in her chair, ready to get busy with the 'real work' when she got a call from Grace. It seemed that one of the day shift coroners had neglected to send out some results, and if the Crown prosecutor couldn't make a case within the hour the suspect would be released. Nat understood the urgency, and headed off to find the delinquent files. She got everything sorted out, but it was about twenty minutes before she could return to her own lab. Just about time to leave to go meet Nick. She went to her desk to collect her little surprise. It was gone! In fact, all the files from her desk were gone. Natalie felt faint with fear. She phoned Grace, asking if she'd been in the office. Grace told her that hadn't left her desk, but she'd seen the trainee in there not long ago. Natalie thanked Grace and hung up the phone. She put a call into the lab, asking for the trainee. She was told that the trainee, Lisa, was taking case results over to the 96th precinct. Natalie looked at the interoffice envelope that sat, prepared, and placed as results always were. She took a deep breath, and explained that the woman must have grabbed the wrong files. She'd taken the 'in progress' work, not the completed work. The person in the lab apologized profusely, and explained that they'd have the woman get the files as soon as they could contact her. It seems she'd also forgotten to bring a pager. But, they'd call the station, maybe someone would see her and let her know. Natalie hung up the phone, inwardly fuming. She was mostly mad at herself for trying such a stunt. But, the woman had, clearly, grabbed the wrong files. Nat grabbed her coat and purse and rushed towards the door, waving a quick 'good-bye' to Grace. Maybe she could find the file at the station, and save herself quite a bit of embarrassment. ### This one's mostly tame, but I'm posting adult just to be on the safe side. "Technology in the Wrong Hands is a Dangerous Thing" (02/02) by S. Clark Natalie parked in a visitor spot and ran for the door. She hurried through the bullpen, trying not to look like she was rushing, and headed straight for Nick's desk. He wasn't there. The top of his desk was clean. She looked over at the desk facing Nick's. There sat his partner, Don Schanke, reading through a file. "Hey, Schank. Where's Nick?" Schanke shrugged. "Took off somewhere." Natalie moved to behind Schanke, peeking over his shoulder at whatever he was reading. Schanke looked back at her, and slammed the file shut. "I don't like it when people read over my shoulder." Natalie took a step to the side, and perched up on the corner of his desk. "Sorry about that, Schank." She let her hand slide over until it was near the stack of files sitting before Schanke. "Is there something you're looking for, Nat?" She pulled her hand back. "Excuse me?" "Or should I say someone?" Schanke gave her a wink. "I thought he said he was meeting you for lunch." "You know, you're right." Natalie hopped off the desk. As she did, she 'inadvertently' pulled the stack of files off the middle of the desk, and onto the floor. "I can't believe what a klutz I am sometimes." Natalie quickly dropped to her knees and started rifling through the folders. The one she was looking for wasn't there. "I am so sorry, Schank." Schanke grabbed the files and pulled, trying to get them out of Natalie's hands. "I'll take care of it." "Are you sure? I can help." "Just, let go, will ya? I'm trying to get through these reports." "I am sorry, Schank." "I know, accidents happen. But please, just go to lunch. He gets so crabby when his 'friend' is delayed." Natalie noted the emphasis on the word friend. Just what she needed, someone else playing matchmaker. "Will do." She felt humiliated. She'd never been a good liar, and not even Schanke bought the fake 'accident.' All she did was make more work for the poor man. And none of her missing files were in the stack. As Natalie headed to the exit, she was flagged down by a desk sergeant. "Excuse me, Doctor Lambert?" "What's up?" "The lab called. Left a message about some files." "What's the message?" "They said they left them with O'Rourke." "And where's O'Rourke?" "He went on break." Natalie wondered how much better this could get. "And where might he have left the files?" "Probably here at the desk." Natalie ran her tongue over her top lip. "Are there any files over there?" The man looked around for a minute. "Nope, don't see any. But I'll have O'Rourke give a call as soon as he gets back in." "You do that," Natalie agreed. She headed out to her car, now feeling an odd mixture of humiliated and angry. She put in a call to the lab. The lab tech had returned, but was off somewhere doing something. Again, no pager. The files were missing. The lab tech was missing. Natalie felt the only thing that could make this evening any more interesting would be a homicide. Then her pager beeped. ### She looked at the number. Nick's cel phone. No surprise. He could just wait, as far as she was concerned. After all, she was doing this for him. And it'd be a lot easier not trying to explain if she didn't talk to him. Natalie climbed in her car and headed back to the morgue. She breezed by Grace, who shouted something about Nick calling, and headed straight for her office. There, sitting at her computer and playing Tetris, was a blonde woman she could only assume was the new lab technician, Lisa. "What are you doing?" Nat's words may have been phrased as a question, but they were most definitely an order. "I'm almost getting the high score. This is cool! Look." Nat reached over and switched off the monitor. The woman looked up at Natalie. "Hey! That wasn't nice!" Natalie counted to three before speaking, not having the patience to continue all the way to ten. "Are you the person who misdelivered my files this evening." "Sorry about that. I mean, they all look the same." Nat picked up the interoffice mail envelope. "Completed files are packaged for a specific precinct, and left in the 'out' box." The woman didn't seem affected by Nat's attitude. "I just thought you were messy." "This is a government laboratory. Those are important evidence files. I need to know where they are." The lab tech pointed towards Nat's desk. "I put 'em back." Nat rubbed at her throbbing temples. "Good. Now, leave." "Do you want me to take the right ones?" "I want you to send down your supervisor, and have that person deliver my files." "Your choice." The tech gave a shrug and walked out. Nat rushed over to her desk. The files were all replaced. All but one. That special one. Just as she thought things couldn't get any worse, the phone rang. She grabbed it after the first ring. "Lambert." "I'm glad to hear your voice. I thought you should know your dinner's getting cold." Realizing she was sunk no matter what, and hoping she didn't have any obvious identifying marks like moles or freckles, Natalie gave up all hope of ever seeing the file again. "I'll be right over." She hung up the phone and headed out to her car. The sooner this evening was over, it couldn't be soon enough, as far as she was concerned. ### Natalie dragged herself off the lift and entered the loft. As promised, there was dinner, Chinese, sitting out and waiting for her. Nick was over by the couch pulling on his coat. "I guess we got our wires crossed this evening." "I had something I needed to check on." She decided on vague. "Sorry about that." He walked over to her. Then, totally unexpected, wrapped his arms around her and gave her a big hug. "What's this for?" she asked, not really sure if she should return his grip. He leaned down and gave her a kiss. Not on the temple, or the cheek, but a deep, on-the-lips kiss. Natalie was caught off-guard by his actions. "It's a start of a thank you. I was hoping to have a better one, but I need to rush back to the station. Schanke just called. He was babbling something about a mess, a deadline. I'm not sure exactly what's up, but I think he needs my help." Nat nodded. "And why are you thanking me?" Nick got into the lift. "For the present; the one O'Rourke gave me." He gave her a wink. "We can discuss the breast of it, I mean rest of it, later." With that, the lift door shut. Natalie rushed over to the couch. There, on the coffeetable, was her file. And her photocopy. He'd most definitely seen it. And, he'd most definitely expressed an interest. Nat froze. And he was gone. She sunk down onto the couch. It was here all along. When it came to matters related to Nick, she just couldn't win. Even times like this when it seemed like she'd won, something still kept them apart. She packed up the food and headed out the door. Her stomach wasn't near a state where she felt like eating, due to both the earlier anxiety, and the promise of what might be. He'd found the file. And his reaction was good. She smiled, as she started back towards work. She hoped the rest of the shift would just fly by. She had a lot to look forward to.
