For some unknown reason, she didn't feel that she was in danger. Rather, the presence comforted her. She knew it couldn't be Nick. Since that night at the Azure, Nick had been distant . . . and she had been attracted to LaCroix. She could still feel LaCroix's hands on her, caressing her neck . . . and that deep kiss from Nick. Her heart stung once again as she recalled his words, "I do not love this woman." She sighed as she entered her apartment. ** Like any hot-blooded woman ** I have simply wanted an object to crave She prepared for bed then crawled into it, exhausted from her day at work. She relaxed, hoping to fall asleep immediately. It didn't happen. She had always wondered about the master vampire, but Nick offered as little detail as was possible. Prying never worked and Nick never volunteered any information. She closed her eyes. LaCroix's face filled her thoughts. She recalled the play of the candlelight on his mouth as he spoke to her. The softness of his lips teased her and contrasted with the images Nick had portrayed with his stories of horror. 'Vampires', she mused, 'must be sensual creatures by necessity in order to catch their prey.' Desire . . . she wondered if they felt it: the painful pleasure of infatuation, or love. She was startled out of her reveries when a cool breeze crossed her body. She opened her eyes to find LaCroix towering over her. She grabbed the bedsheets, covering herself. ** But you, you're not allowed ** You're uninvited ** An unfortunate slight "Good evening, Natalie." He said softly. The silky tones washed over her. He sat down beside her and leaned over to whisper into her ear. "Forgive me for the intrusion upon your home." His cool breath caressed near the nape of her neck. His long, graceful fingers touched her hair, running through the auburn curls. ** Must be strangely exciting ** To watch the stoic squirm She sat up and leaned against the headboard, breaking the contact. "Who are you? What do you want?" Natalie asked, trying to play the charade, pretending to act frightened. "Tsk, tsk. I should rather have hoped that you remembered." He shook his head as he leaned closer to her. His luscious lips parted slightly before they met hers. Natalie moaned as his tongue intruded into her warm mouth. His cool tongue melted and moved within as she pulled his head closer, caressing the back of his neck. ** Must be somewhat hard telling ** To watch them burn me shepherd He broke off the kiss, and she gasped in protest. He chuckled as he said, "You do remember, don't you?" "Damn you, LaCroix." She said, wiping her mouth. She reached for her phone, intending to call for help from Nick. "And do you think your *chevalier* will rescue you?" He sat next to her, grasping the hand that held the phone. "That he *cares* for you?" The words hit like ice water. Tears welled up as she sat there in pain, both physical and emotional. "My dear Doctor, Nicholas has never cared for anything other than himself." He released her hand, kissing it in apology. "Leave." Her voice shook. "Just leave." ** But you you're not allowed ** You're uninvited ** An unfortunate slight "And if I refuse?" His eyes smoldered with some unknown emotion. She didn't reply. She should be fighting for her life. She didn't understand why he just didn't kill her. ** Like any uncharted territory ** I must seem greatly intriguing "I've never met anyone as exquisite as you; both in mind and in body." He pulled the covers back and gazed at her appreciatively. Sitting in silence, she allowed him to come closer once again. Those lips called to her. The pink fingers of dawn began to show through her windows. She watched in wonder as the light slowly crept in. "I have not been drawn to someone in a very *long* time as I have with you." She felt his breath on her cheeks as he began to nuzzle them with his own. ** You speak of my love like ** You have experienced love like mine before "And you *are* drawn to me . . . are you not?" He planted soft kisses along one side of her jaw, caressing the other side with his cool fingers. He stood to close the drapes, preventing the impending dawn from reaching the privacy of the room. He returned to the bed and sat, facing her. He held her arms, restraining her. She quelled the fright that threatened to overcome her as he pulled her closer to embrace her. "Nicholas was wrong to have hurt you. A long time ago, he took away something very precious to me." She was pliant in his embrace. She whispered the name, "Fleur." ** But this is not allowed ** You're uninvited ** An unfortunate slight "Will you let me into your heart?" he asked, leaning back to look into her eyes. ** I don't think you unworthy ** I need a moment to deliberate. "Did I ever have a choice?" she whispered in reply. http://members.tripod.com/~EngrCj
