Unless otherwise specified, the term "PC" means personal computers in the broad sense, including Macintosh, Amiga, etc., in addition to MS-DOS machines. Unless otherwise specified, all monetary amounts are in United States dollars. Canadian dollars are shown as "CA$," Australian dollars as "AU$," British pounds as "BR#," etc. A "$" with no country designator is US dollars (US$). Text written by others for inclusion in the FAQL has been reformatted to fit the margins and format I'm using. Text has not been changed (except spelling errors and some minor things in the archive retrieval section) or deleted, just moved to fit in shorter lines. The outline is given first, so you'll know where to look to find the question(s) you need/want answered. Any deviations from the rule that all headings must have at least 2 subheadings are deliberate. I want to keep the headings consistent, and allow for easy updates as new material is added. I have made reasonable (and sometimes more than that) efforts to ensure accuracy, but I can't guarantee that everything in this document is completely accurate. Also, new episodes will make some of this information inaccurate or dated. If you find inaccuracies, please let me know and I will correct them before releasing the next version. Please don't post FAQL comments to either of the lists. I. Introduction A. What is this FAQL thing, and why should I read it? This file attempts to answer many recurring questions that veteran listmembers would rather not see repeated. Also, many of the trivia items are a (hopefully) useful source of information to fiction writers. Hopefully, these two objectives will help reduce the number of unnecessary posts, making the lists more enjoyable for everyone. All list subscribers are asked to read this entire file (except the appendices which are optional) all the way through before posting anything of any kind to either FORKNI-L or FKFIC-L. If you've read a previous version, you probably don't really *need* to read this one, but it is recommended. B. What is Forever Knight? Forever Knight is a TV series revolving around the life of Toronto Police Detective Nicolas (Nick) Knight -- an 800 year old vampire who wants to be mortal again. C. What are FORKNI-L & FKFIC-L? Electronic mailing lists for discussion of Forever Knight, and fan-written Forever Knight fiction. FORKNI-L was started on December 9, 1992 by Jean Prior, to whom we are all eternally grateful. FKFIC-L was started on May 12, 1993 after numerous complaints about the number and size of stories being posted to FORKNI-L. Specific rules about what sorts of things may be posted to each list are in section II.B. below. D. Other FAQ files 1. Episode guide The episode guide is maintained by Allen Braunsdorf (ab@nova.cc.purdue.edu) and is available from the lists' FTP site. 2. Drinking game The Forever Knight drinking game is maintained by Amy Hull (amyhull@freenet.scri.fsu.edu) and is available from the lists' FTP site. This drinking game is based on the Highlander drinking game, which was based on the Star Trek: The Next Generation drinking game. 3. Quote list Amy Hull is compiling a list of favorite quotes from the show. If you have quotes to contribute and/or want a copy, please send mail to her at amyhull@freenet.scri.fsu.edu. 4. Trivia questions A rather long file of trivia questions and answers about FK is maintained by Laurie Salopek (LMS5@PSUVM.PSU.EDU) and is available from the FTP site. There is overlap with some of the story-related FAQL questions; this wasn't intentional, but a number of them are asked frequently and thus fall within the FAQL's purpose statement. 5. Actors' other roles list Linda Roth is compiling a list of the various things the FK actors have appeared in. If you want a copy or see someone in something and want to contribute it to the list, send mail to her at URCHIN@VM.TEMPLE.EDU or URCHIN@TEMPLEVM.BITNET or LROTH1@GENIE.GEIS.COM 6. Convention listing For a list of upcoming convention appearances by the FK stars, send mail to Linda Roth at URCHIN@VM.TEMPLE.EDU or URCHIN@TEMPLEVM.BITNET or LROTH1@GENIE.GEIS.COM 7. List of stations carrying the new season The list of stations which will carry the new episodes this Fall was posted to FORKNI-L in August. It can be retrieved from the archives using the database search procedures described later. E. Revision notes Changes since last version (September 20, 1994): New address for Nigel Bennett's fan club. Removed the Star Trek LISTSERV lists from list of other lists of possible interest, since they moved to a non-LISTSERV server. Various other clarifications and revisions Planned changes for future versions: Section listing and attempting to explain inconsistencies, historical inaccuracies, etc. Cast biographies Section listing times where footage from one episode is reused in one or more other episodes. II. Forever Knight-the mailing lists A. LISTS ERV & computer stuff (mostly technical) 1. General stuff Subscription requests, removal requests, etc. should be sent to LISTSERV@PSUVM.PSU.EDU. The only time you should mail something to the list address (FORKNI-L or FKFIC-L) is when you want to have that item distributed to the subscribers of the list. When sending commands to the LISTSERV, your mail should have no Subject: line, or it should be blank (If your system requires you to have a subject line, hitting the space bar once should be sufficient), and (if possible) don't include a signature or other non-command text. Also, don't include any punctuation in server commands. When sending multiple commands in a single mail file, each command must be on a separate line, with no blank lines between commands. Like most computers, LISTSERVs are extremely picky about commands being worded in the exactly correct way, so try to be careful. Sending server commands to a list address rather than the server will accomplish nothing except annoying the other subscribers. In the following sections, I'll be giving various examples of commands. Whenever an example uses the word "listname," that means to replace "listname" with the name of the appropriate list when you send actual commands. All commands shown here will work on the FK lists, but some may not work on all lists. Particularly, the DIGEST subscription option and the information on retrieving posts from the LISTSERV's archives. Not all lists allow the DIGEST option, and many lists don't keep archives of posts. This is not intended to be a tutorial in how and why LISTSERV works the way it does, and I will not go into all LISTSERV commands or subscription options. This is only intended to provide basic information on the most used commands and options. If you want more detailed information, instructions for ordering the LISTSERV manuals are given in question 12 below. Attention BITNET subscribers: The majority of subscribers to these lists are using Internet, rather than BITNET. Therefore, I am using PSUVM's Internet name in all examples. Just remember that wherever I say PSUVM.PSU.EDU, you only need the PSUVM part. Also, you probably have the option of sending LISTSERV commands as interactive messages rather than through e-mail (except for database searches). The commands themselves stay the same. If your system is on both BITNET and Internet, you'll need to be consistent about which address you send posts and server commands to. 2. Who's in charge & how are the rules enforced? The listowner is Jean Prior (JAP8@PSUVM.PSU.EDU), generally known as "Jaye" or "Jeanster." She's the one who sets the rules and enforces them. If Jean is unavailable for some reason, the assistant listowner, Lisa McDavid (D020214@UNIVSCVM.CSD.SCAROLINA.EDU), is in charge. Rules violators will be warned to behave. Continued violations will result in the offender(s) being removed from the list on which they're misbehaving. 3. Subscribing & unsubscribing a. How do I subscribe? Send this command to the LISTSERV: SUBSCRIBE listname Your Name For example: SUBSCRIBE FORKNI-L Deanna Troi The SUBSCRIBE command is the only time you should include your name with a server command. SIGNUP will work as a synonym for SUBSCRIBE. The listowners prefer that you use your real name rather than a pseudonym, but this is not currently enforced on the Forever Knight lists. You should be aware that some other lists do enforce that rule, sometimes very strictly. b. How do I unsubscribe? Send this command to the LISTSERV: UNSUBSCRIBE listname For example: UNSUBSCRIBE FORKNI-L Do NOT include your name in the UNSUBSCRIBE command. SIGNOFF will work as a synonym for UNSUBSCRIBE. 4. How do I post? To post to FORKNI-L, e-mail the item you want posted to the list to FORKNI-L@PSUVM.PSU.EDU Please be sure your subject line is reasonably descriptive, unless the post contains spoilers for new episodes. In that case, it is subject to special spoiler rules explained later. If you're using your mail program's "reply" function, chances are the subject will automatically be Re: the original subject. If you aren't discussing the same topic, change the subject line or start a new note, rather than replying. To post fiction to FKFIC-L, e-mail the item you want posted to FKFIC-L@PSUVM.PSU.EDU The subject line should contain the story's name (or a shortened version if it's too long), and, if a multi-part story, the part number. For example, if I post a 15 part story to FKFIC-L named "LaCroix Meets His Match," the subject line for part 2 should look something like this: Subject: LaCroix Meets His Match (02/15) Note that it's part 02 rather than just 2. For stories posted in more that 9 parts, the leading zero is necessary for people whose mail programs sort by subject line. If it were (2/15), it would get sorted after part 15. 5. Subscription options a. I thought my post got through okay, but I got bounced copies of it. What's going on and how can I be sure my post got through? Most likely, your post went through fine and there's someone on the list whose account has been deleted or their mailbox is full. Such bounced mail is supposed to go to the listowner so she can remove the offending account from the subscription list, but it doesn't always work out that way. To be sure your posts are going through correctly, send the following command to the LISTSERV: SET listname ACK This will tell the LISTSERV to mail you a note saying: "Your message dated ... with subject ... was successfully distributed to list ..." EVERY time you post something. If you get such an acknowledgement, your post went through fine. Don't repost! If you got an acknowledgement, but still get bounced copies of the same post, send a copy of the headers from the bounced note to the listowner, so the person whose account is causing problems can be removed from the list. b. How do I have copies of my own posts sent to me? On the FK lists, this is already set up as the default. If you're getting copies of your own posts and want to continue getting them, you can skip this question. I'm including this for your use on other lists, as well as if you turn it off and want to turn it back on later. Send this command: SET listname REPRO For example: SET FORKNI-L REPRO To turn this off and NOT have a copy of your own posts sent to you, send this command: SET listname NOREPRO For example: SET FKFIC-L NOREPRO If you are receiving your mail from a list in DIGEST format (see next question), how the REPRO option is set doesn't matter; you will receive your own posts as part of the digest whether you want to or not. c. What is the "digest" people keep talking about and how do I get on and off it? The DIGEST option has the LISTSERV combine all posts for a day into a single mailing, which is sent out once a day. DIGESTs are sent from the LISTSERV each night at 23:00 Eastern (0300 or 0400 UTC, depending on time of year). If list traffic is heavy during the day, "Special Issue" digests will be sent out when there are 1000 or more lines of text waiting to be distributed to the DIGEST subscribers. To set your subscription to DIGEST, send this command: SET listname DIGEST For example: SET FORKNI-L DIGEST If you want to get off the DIGEST, and go back to getting each message as it's posted, send this command: SET listname MAIL d. I'm going to be gone for a few days. Is unsubscribing the only way to temporarily turn off the mail? No. If you're going to be gone for a reasonably short period of time, send this command to the LISTSERV: SET listname NOMAIL When you get back and want to start receiving mail again, send the command: SET listname MAIL (or SET listname DIGEST, if that's how you want to get list mail. See the previous question for more information on that.) If you're going to be gone for more than about a month, you should UNSUBSCRIBE rather than setting NOMAIL. e. I want to subscribe, but I don't want my name & address to show up on the subscription list. Can I do that? Yes. Send this command to the LISTSERV: SET listname CONCEAL You will still be subscribed, and still receive mail as before. If you post anything, your name and userid will still show up in the posting, just as before. The only difference is that you won't show up on the REVIEWable subscription list; only the listowners can get a list of the concealed subscribers. (See question 7 below for more information on the REVIEW command.) To unconceal yourself, so you show up on the viewable subscription list again, send this command: SET listname NOCONCEAL f. My mail program strips off the headers of mail, so I can't see who originally sent posts. Is there anything I can do about this? Yes. This is a very common problem, particularly for PC based mail programs. Send the following command to the LISTSERV: SET listname DUALHDR For example: SET FKFIC-L DUALHDR This will tell the LISTSERV to include the original Sender:, From: (renamed "Poster:"), and Subject: lines as part of the body of the mail. Your other option is to subscribe using the DIGEST format described above. g. Can I change more than one option at a time? Yes, but please include all new options as a single command to save yourself (and the LISTSERV) some time. For example, let's say I want to change my subscription to DIGEST format and turn on the ACK option. I would send this command: SET FORKNI-L ACK DIGEST The LISTSERV will then send back a summary of my subscription's settings like the one described in the next question. Note: the options can be given in any order, so long as they're all valid. If you request mutually exclusive options (i.e. NOMAIL and DIGEST), the one specified *last* will be taken. 6. How can I get a summary of my subscription's settings of the above options? Send a "QUERY listname" command. For example, I sent the command QUERY FORKNI-L to the LISTSERV and it sent me back the following summary: Subscription options for Steve Fellows , list FORKNI-L: Ack=Yes, Mail=Digests, Files=Yes, Repro=Yes, Header=Short, Renewal=Yes, Conceal=No, Topics=All The options discussed above are set the way I want them, and the others, that I didn't discuss, are set to the default settings. I won't go into the other options here. If you're interested in more information, look it up in the LISTSERV manuals (see question 12) or send me mail privately. Note: The exact format of the summary may vary slightly for different lists, depending on which version of LISTSERV a particular site is running (1.7f or 1.8a) and exactly how the site's postmasters have configured it. 7. How can I get a list of subscribers? Send this command to the LISTSERV: REVIEW listname You will be sent a file containing technical information about the list, the addresses of the listowners, the list of unconcealed subscribers (see question 5.e above), and a statement of how many subscribers there are. If you don't want to see the subscription list, but want to know how many subscribers there are, send this command: REVIEW listname (SHORT 8. Why did the LISTSERV send me mail, saying I had to "confirm" my subscription? Once a year, the LISTSERV will automatically send you mail asking you to renew your subscription. Failure to renew within the time period stated in the request (7 days) will result in the LISTSERV automatically kicking you off the list. (If you don't renew in time, you can just resubscribe.) The instructions for how to do it are included in the note from the LISTSERV asking you to renew, and should be reasonably self-explanatory. However, if they're not, this is the essential part: Send this command to the LISTSERV: CONFIRM listname For example: CONFIRM FORKNI-L The primary reason this is required is to get nonexistent accounts (and accounts that have been set to NOMAIL for an extended period) out of the subscription list. Secondarily, it's also to be sure everyone who's subscribed actually wants to be. 9. How do I get copies of old FORKNI-L posts? Since July 22, 1993, all posts to FORKNI-L have been automatically archived by the LISTSERV. However, due to disk space considerations, PSUVM only keeps logs for the current month and the previous two months online. Older log files are available on request from LMS5@PSUVM.PSU.EDU and may be made available on the FTP site at some time in the future. The list is archived monthly, with filenames following this pattern: listname LOGyymm To retrieve them, send a GET command to the LISTSERV. For example, to retrieve the October 1994 log, send this command to the LISTSERV: GET FORKNI-L LOG9410 For the list of available files, send an INDEX command. For example: INDEX FORKNI-L will return a list of the FORKNI-L files available from the server. WARNING: These files are rather large (see table below), and you may be unable to retrieve them if your mailbox and/or disk space is not large enough. You also may be unable to edit them due their size, depending of the type of software you're using and how much RAM you have available. Kilobyte figures are rounded to the nearest whole number. How do I get copies of old FKFIC-L stories? Like FORKNI-L, FKFIC-L has been automatically archived since July 22, 1993, but, unfortunately, like FORKNI-L, the older archives are no longer available from PSUVM. FKFIC-L archives are kept online at PSUVM for the current month and the four previous months. Older archive files are available on request from LMS5@PSUVM.PSU.EDU and may be made available from the FTP site sometime in the future. Also, many older stories *are* available elsewhere. See section IV.C.4.b.(3) for description and ordering information of the fanzine Forever Net. If you're looking for specific posts, use the LISTSERV database search procedure described below. If you want "everything from the 3 months I was away" or something like that, request the appropriate archive(s) from the LISTSERV, using the procedure described above for retrieving the FORKNI-L archives. (Just replace FORKNI-L with FKFIC-L in your request.) If you can't get the LISTSERV to send you what you want, send e-mail to the author, and ask her/him for copies of what you're looking for. If you don't know who the author is, post an inquiry to FORKNI-L (*NOT* FKFIC-L). The following examples of LISTSERV database searches are slightly modified versions of posts made to FKFIC-L by Jae Walker on October 15, 1993 and February 17, 1994 and are reproduced here with her gracious permission. Please note that the exact searches shown below are no longer possible due to older files being removed from the LISTSERV archives. However, the concepts and procedures are still the same. Editor's note: I didn't completely redo this whole section because with older files being removed regularly, keeping it updated with only currently available material would take time I can't afford to devote to this. People have been asking the authors (or the list) to send those parts, and while that works, it's not terribly efficient, and in the case of some of the authors (who pay to send mail), it can even be a hardship. Fortunately, FKFIC-L is on a Bitnet listserver, and our Grand and Glorious Listowner has managed to wheedle system administration into letting us have storage space, as well as distribution. Bitnet listservers have database capabilities, and that means that with a few simple commands YOU can get copies of whatever you've missed, as quickly as PSUVM can send them. Here's how: First off, let's say I wanted the chapters of HUNTER that I accidentally deleted (or lost in a disk crash, or whatever). First, I'd ask the listserv to give me a list of every posting with "hunter" in it. (Like so:) ((note - I ran these examples on Oct 9th, so they don't reflect changes since then)) To: LISTSERV@PSUVM.PSU.EDU Subj: // Database Search DD=Rules //Rules DD * Search hunter in fkfic-l Index /* What this is telling the listserv is that I want a list of every message posted to the FKFIC-L list containing the word "hunter" (case is irrelevant). Please note that *everything* is needed, including the spaces (and the *right number* of spaces). You might want to cut'n'paste the search template right into your message and just change the search terms. The message is *very* similar, substituting "print" and the numbers of the messages for "index". You also only get ONE copy, which is nice as well. The database will let you use multiple words (ie: round robin). Authors, you can help by giving your chapters distinctive and separate names -- most of you do anyways. ALL MAIL FOR A RANGE OF DAYS ---------------------------- If you went away for a week or lost email for a weekend, you might want to just pull in everything for the days you missed. For that you'd use something like this: // Database Search DD=Rules //Rules DD * search * in FKFIC-L from 94/02/12 to 94/02/14 print all /* Now, some weeks (such as during the FK Wars) there can be a LOT of mail, so you might want to just get a list of the messages, so you can pick and choose what to retrieve. All you need to do is replace 'print all' with 'index' and you'll get a list of subject lines (see example above for how to print specific messages). ALL MAIL BY A PARTICULAR AUTHOR ------------------------------- Say I've been away for a few weeks, and Susan Garret is one of my *favorite* authors (which happens to be true). I want to have a list of everything she's posted to the Listserv that's still available. // Database Search DD=Rules //Rules DD * search * in FKFIC-L where sender contains susang index /* This is telling Listserv to search the FKFIC archives since the beginning, for any messages where the "Sender" field contains susang. Note that I didn't use Susan's entire email id - just the first part. This would most probably be too long for me to just 'print all'. I'd have to pick and choose from the index list. ALL CHAPTERS OF A STORY ----------------------- Now, this one only works if the author has been consistent in putting the title on the subject line... but when it does work it's a great way to get an entire story in one message. Be advised - you may hit a number-of-lines cutoff, and then you'll have to ask for each chapter individually or specify a larger cutoff point. // Database Search DD=Rules //Rules DD * Search * in fkfic-l where subject contains (sleep AND of AND the AND Undead) Index /* Here I wanted all the chapters of Sleep of the Undead. If you need to, you can move the whole 'subject contains' down to the next line. Here's the result - if I think I want everything, I just resend my search with Print All instead of Index. If you order a large amount of stuff at once, you may exceed the default 2000 line limit for orders. To override this limit, you must specify a new limit. If you have a small mailbox, you may want to go with the default limit (or set a smaller one if you like) and submit several requests, rather than overfilling your mailbox with a few huge files. For more information, see question 12 below. 11. I'm still having problems getting server commands to work. Send mail to the listowner (JAP8@PSUVM.PSU.EDU). If you don't get an answer within 48 hours, send mail to the assistant listowner (D020214@UNIVSCVM.CSD.SCAROLINA.EDU). When sending problem reports to a listowner, please describe your problem in as much detail as possible. 12. Where can I get detailed descriptions and manuals for LISTSERV commands and operations? An INFO REFCARD command will send a short (16K) summary of all major commands and many minor ones. For more detailed information, send an INFO ? command for a list of available manuals. The beginner level manuals are clearly written and relatively easy to understand. However, the more advanced manuals are highly technical, so if you're not good with computers, find someone who is to help you with them. If you're going to be doing database searches, I recommend you order the database functions manual (91.3K). Just send the command INFO DATABASE 13. How many people are subscribed to the lists? As of this writing, FORKNI-L membership is about 400. FKFIC-L membership is around 220. To see exactly how many people are currently subscribed, see Question 7. 14. How much traffic can I expect from these lists? FORKNI-L traffic is highly variable. The overall average number of posts per day is around 18, but actual traffic fluctuates widely. Don't be surprised to sometimes see several days with 40 or 45 posts per day, followed by a week of 10 or 15 posts per day. FKFIC-L traffic is lower, and less variable. It averages about 4 posts per day. As a point of trivia, the record number of posts in a single day for FORKNI-L is 99 on September 20, 1994. The record for FKFIC-L is 47 on January 24, 1994. 15. How can you have a list to distribute fan-written fiction? Isn't that illegal? Technically, distribution of fan-written fiction (any genre, not just FK or Star Trek or whatever) without permission from the copyright holder is a violation of the copyright holder's intellectual property rights and is thus illegal. However, neither Sony/Columbia/TriStar nor Paragon has shown any desire to stop or restrict Forever Knight fan fiction. In fact, the fanzine Forever Net, which prints fiction posted to FKFIC-L is mentioned in the studio's publicity material for the show. The definitive document regarding copyrights as they apply to Internet is available by FTP from rtfm.mit.edu in the directory /pub/usenet/news.answers/law/Copyright-FAQ 16. How is FORKNI-L related to the newsgroup alt.tv.forever-knight? FORKNI-L and the Usenet newsgroup alt.tv.forever-knight share the common purpose of discussing Forever Knight, and some people read both the newsgroup and the mailing list. There is no other connection between them. *Please* do not forward posts from the list to the newsgroup or from the newsgroup to the list without permission from the person who wrote the post being forwarded. This is considered a serious breach of netiquette. 17. Is it really necessary to pick apart every tiny detail of every second of every episode? Yes. B. Posting rules, suggestions, & conventions 1. FORKNI-L a. No stories If you're interested in writing (or reading) Forever Knight stories, poems, etc., you are not alone, but send them to FKFIC-L rather than FORKNI-L. FKFIC-L is devoted entirely and exclusively to fan-written Forever Knight fiction. b. Netiquette (1) Spoilers Forever Knight is syndicated, so it airs at different days and times in different places. When discussing new episodes, you have to be careful not to "spoil" the episode by giving away information, without adequate warning, about an episode which others may not have seen. There is an absolute BAN on posting spoilers about new episodes until the second Tuesday after the episode's first satellite feed. (The first satellite feed is on Monday mornings, and most stations air the show 4 to 6 days later.) Starting at noon Eastern time on the second Tuesday, posts containing spoiler information are permitted as long as they follow the rules below. The listowner is stricter about enforcing spoiler warning rules than most of the other posting rules, and the penalties are stronger too. Violaters of this policy will be forcibly set to NOMAIL for a period of one week, after which time they will be returned to their previous mail setting (MAIL or DIGEST). Repeat offenders will be forcibly removed from the list. Starting at noon Eastern on the second Tuesday after the first satellite feed, posting of spoilers is permitted if the following rules are obeyed: (a) The Subject: line of your post must be in the form SPOILERS: "episode name" For example: Subject: SPOILERS: "Love You to Death" Do not include ANYthing else about the episode in the Subject line until its spoiler protection period expires. The SPOILERS: prefix is necessary so those who do not wish to receive any spoiler posts at all can tell the LISTSERV to not send them those posts. Editor's note: I will include information on filtering out spoiler posts in the next regular version of this FAQL. Until then, send private mail to one of the listowners for help and/or more information. (b) Include a line at the beginning of the message which also warns of spoilers for a specific episode. If more than one episode is being discussed, list them all, even if they're from series other than FK (particularly Star Trek, Highlander or X-Files, all of which have large followings on FORKNI-L). (c) Follow this with 10 blank lines. (For those of you familiar with using ^L's in Usenet posts, those won't work in mail for many operating systems, so you have to use blank lines.) (d) New episodes must have full spoiler protection until the third Tuesday after the satellite feed. At that time, spoiler warnings are still required in the Subject: line of posts, but leaving spoiler space within the post is no longer required. Starting the fourth Tuesday after the satellite feed, open discussion with no spoiler protection at all is permitted. Most stations will air it the weekend of the 6th, 7th and 8th. Posting any spoilers at all for episode X is prohibited until noon EST on the 10th. (The second Tuesday after the first satellite feed.) Starting at noon on the 10th, spoilers can be posted with full spoiler protection. A week later (noon on the 17th, the third Tuesday after the first satellite feed), the 10 blank lines can be dropped but the Subject: header rules are still in effect. A week after that (noon on the 24th, the fourth Tuesday after the first satellite feed), open discussion with no spoiler protection at all is permitted. This may sound like overkill, but it's the only way to keep from ruining episodes for those whose stations are a week or more behind the first broadcast date. An example of acceptable full spoiler protection follows: Subject: SPOILERS: "The Immortals" SPOILERS for the FK episode "The Immortals," the HL episode "The Vampires," and the X-Files episode "Deep Throat Lives." S P O I L E R S . . They finally found what it takes to make Scully believe. I would too if I saw LaCroix bite an Immie Deep Throat while he was in the middle of receiving a Quickening. :) Editor's note: If anyone wants to use this idea in a story for FKFIC-L, HLFIC-L, and/or alt.tv.x-files.creative, you are welcome to do so as long as I get proper credit. (2) No flames. If you want to criticize someone for something they've said, please send it through private mail to that person. Even if what you're objecting to was said publicly, send responses privately. Better yet, write down your response and then burn the paper. Please never send "flames" to the list. The listowners have very little (i.e. no) tolerance for public flames on lists they own and will not hesitate to remove subscribers who choose to ignore this policy. We're not talking about polite critical discussion & disagreement about a story point -- that's the sort of thing the list is here for. We're talking about calling someone stupid for holding an opinion, or something of that nature. (3) Delete unnecessary mail headers & quoted text from responses. If you want to reply to something someone has posted, you may want to include some text from what you're replying to, so we'll know what you're talking about. If you do this, please include only an ABSOLUTE BARE MINIMUM of text. 5 lines or less is almost always enough, plus another 1 to identify the author of the thing you're responding to. Quoting large sections of text is unnecessary because this is a mailing list, so it's safe to assume those reading your reponse have read the original post as well and only need a gentle reminder of what was previously said. Also, unnecessary duplication clutters up the archive files and eats the LISTSERV's disk space. If you don't know how to edit items you're quoting, ask the appropriate people at your site. If you still can't edit down text for quoting, write a 1 or 2 sentence summary of the item you're replying to, and don't quote any of the original text. (4) Combine multiple responses and topics If you want to reply to several things and/or talk about several different topics, combine your remarks into a single large post rather than making several small posts. (5) Put address at bottom of all posts Always put your e-mail address at the bottom (or somewhere else in the body) of anything you post. Mail software for some systems doesn't properly include the e-mail address of the sender of an item, and not many people know about setting the DUALHDR option mentioned in the subscription options section. (6) Read all list mail before responding to requests Before responding to a post, especially a simple information request (like "What's the address of GWD's fan club?"), read all of the mail from the list you've received so far. If it's an information request, it may very well have been answered already. Of course, if you're getting the list in DIGEST format, you won't know, but there's not much you can conveniently do about that. (7) Wait at least 24 hours before asking after a "lost" post If you post something and expected, but didn't get, an acknowledgement quickly, don't post something asking if everyone got it. Wait at least 24 hours (longer if it's a weekend or holiday), and if it hasn't shown up by then, either: (a) Try retrieving it from the list archive using the database search procedures previously described. (b) Send mail to one of the listowners asking about it. They can then check the list archive and tell you if your post got through. c. Can we talk about non-FK vampires here? You can make and discuss direct comparisons between FK & non-FK vampires, but that's all. Other discussion of non-FK vampires is strictly prohibited. This is an FK list, not an Anne Rice (or whoever) list. If you're interested in discussing non-FK vampires, I suggest you look at the Appendix to this FAQL for directions to appropriate places for such discussions. d. Keep it on topic!! All posts should have some DIRECT relation to Forever Knight (or the _Nick Knight_ TV movie) AND be of general interest to the list at large. The most common problem here is a comparison of FK to another show which branches out into a full-fledged discussion of the other show and has little or nothing to do with FK. Comparisons are fine, but if it's not *directly* related to FK, take it off-list. This is a Forever Knight list, not a Highlander (or whatever) list. Also, short 1 or 2 line posts saying something like "yeah, I agree," or something similar are completely useless. In general, if what you have to say takes less than 10 lines, please reconsider whether or not to post it. Non-FK vampires, spin-off topics (like the Highlander example above), mail directed to and/or of interest only to specific people, etc. should be taken to a more appropriate list or to private mail. e. Don't post GIFs or other binary or encoded files Such files are too large to post without overloading many subscribers' mailboxes and many people don't want them and/or can't decode them into a usable form. f. Why is the episode "Only the Lonely" discussed so much? Veteran listmembers discuss this episode frequently, but people still keep finding interesting things to say regarding it, and further discussion is certainly welcome. The episode contains large amounts of character development, which is what most of the fans want to see. Also, the membership of the FK lists is predominantly female, and the issue of sexual assault is something which, unfortunately, women in our society have to be very aware of. This episode has led to some interesting things, including very well thought out speculations that Natalie may have been sexually assaulted before, the overwhelming popularity of Sidney Lambert, and followup stories on the FKFIC-L list. g. Correct spellings of character names (1) Nicolas It was shown on screen in "Killer Instinct," and is historically accurate, since it would have been spelled this way during Nick's mortal lifetime. (2) LaCroix Nigel Bennett spells it this way. (Rather than the common variants "Lacroix," "La croix," or "La Croix.") Editor's note: The executive producer has spelled it "Lacroix" in some posts on AOL. I suppose we'll have to wait until the Companion book comes out to be sure. (3) Janette Based on the way they usually pronounce it on the show, it really should be spelled "Jeanette" or "Jeannette," but the official spelling shown in the second season opening credits is "Janette." In the Highlander episode "Turnabout," Geraint's character's girlfriend was named "Jeanette," the spelling of which was shown on screen. h. What's all this Cousin/Knightie/FK War, etc. stuff about? Early in 1993, someone took a survey to see which characters were the favorites. During the voting period, some people started labelling themselves by nicknames reflecting their preferences. At some point, some of the LaCroix fans began "harassing" Nick's, pretending to be following LC's orders. This eventually evolved into the "FK War" on FKFIC-L at the beginning of 1994. The occasional flare-ups of "hostilities" do sometimes (but not always) get out of hand, but the listowners will step in if it gets too bad. The whole thing is meant in fun (even if they don't always do a good job of telling that to new people) and can be safely ignored (or you can try, at least) if you don't want to participate. The characters and their "factions" are as follows: Nick: Knight/ie LaCroix: Cousin Janette: Raven/ette Natalie: NatPack Schanke: FOD ("Friend Of Don," pronouced "food") Sidney: FOsSIL ("Friend Of SIdney Lambert") Refuse to be tied to one character: Die-Hard Note: The "Cousins" generally refer to LaCroix as "Uncle." The name "cousins" and the appelation "uncle" are a list in-joke and completely unrelated to the show itself. i. Acronyms and abbreviations People are basically lazy, and don't like to type out things like "Geraint Wyn Davies" or "Forever Knight" when acronyms are easier to make and use. Therefore, a number of acronyms and abbreviations have evolved. I'm including all the Forever Knight ones I can think of, as well as some common ones in general use around the networks. Stories only! FKFIC-L is for Forever Knight fiction !!**ONLY**!! Anything that's not a story should be sent to FORKNI-L or through private mail. Questions or comments about stories should be sent directly to the author. If you don't know who the author is, or just feel you have to comment publicly, send it to FORKNI-L, *NOT* FKFIC-L. Narrative prose is the most popular format, but scripts, poems, songs or whatever are welcome, as long as they relate to Forever Knight. For info on getting past stories or sections of stories, see sections II.A.10 and IV.C.4.b.5. Editor's note: I realize (and understand why) there is great temptation to discuss FKFIC-L stories on that list, but when Jean created the list, she said such comments and other non-story items are supposed to go to FORKNI-L. Until/unless she publicly posts an official change, that rule stands. b. No reposts As mentioned in section II.A.9., all posts since July 22, 1993 are automatically archived. Please do not repost anything which has been posted since then. Rewrites or other major revisions are ok, but if there aren't any changes, or changes are very minor, please don't repost it. If you post a rewrite of something you've posted before, please put "revised" or "rewrite" or something like that in the subject line of each section. c. Label sex, violence, and language Stories containing explicit sex, graphic violence, or profanity worse than what would be in a PG-13 movie are acceptable for posting, but you must put a warning at the top of the story. If you're posting the story in parts, put a warning at the top of each part. d. Formatting suggestions These are suggestions to help make your stories more readable. These are NOT rules. While I'm putting this in the FKFIC-L section, most of these suggestions are applicable to any type of post to any electronic mailing list or newsgroup. I'm including them here because the problems caused by poor formatting are compounded in a story type post, where you want the reader to closely follow what you're saying instead of merely scanning over it. (Veterans of the SUPERGUY and VAMPYRES lists can attest to that.) (1) Single space everything!! Double spaced text is extremely difficult to read on a computer screen, and can unnecessarily cost readers money for various reasons (charges for mail based on size, printer charges, etc.). A blank line between paragraphs will tend to improve readability, but within paragraphs, please single space! (2) Left justify everything! Like double spaced text, fully justified text is very difficult to read on a computer screen. Also, the extra spaces make the overall document larger, which uses more disk space. (3) Don't hyphenate. As with double spacing and full justification, hyphenated words are much more difficult to read on a computer screen than on paper. If you have a long word that won't fit on the line, just let that line be short, and take the word to the next line. This also applies to e-mail addresses. If an address is too long to fit on one line, it's somewhat common to split it at a "." but it's really preferable put the whole thing on a new line. (4) Size of posts For FORKNI-L and FKFIC-L, the LISTSERV does not enforce a limit on the size of individual posts. However, due to size limitations which may be imposed by network gateways, recipients' mailboxes, etc., it is generally suggested that individual posts to mailing lists be no more than 200-250 lines each. (5) Line length Ideally, each line of text should be no more than 72 characters. It makes things much easier for those of us using IBM mainframes who read mail online rather than downloading or printing it, and the wide right margin permits quoting of posts without cutting off the ends of the lines or making lines longer than 80 characters. However, as long as you keep your lines under 80 characters, you shouldn't cause any serious problems. Lines longer than 80 characters can cause all sorts of problems with mailers in many operating systems. Be particularly careful if you type a story in a PC word processor and upload it for posting. If not saved properly, each paragraph may be saved as a single line, causing the over 80 characters per line problem in a big way. Also, if you use a word processor, be sure to set your left margin to 0 rather than the usual 10 spaces or whatever. (6) the TAB key Avoid the TAB key! Different systems treat tab characters differently, which can cause very strange, and undesirable, results on different computers. If you want to indent or center something, use spaces instead of tabs. Many people avoid this problem entirely by not indenting anything. (7) Quotes To indicate that a character is thinking something, rather than speaking, you might want to consider using something other than standard double-quotes ("). In print, this is usually done with italics, but that's not possible here. Many people use single quotes ('), asterisks (*), angle brackets (<> or ><), or tildes (~). (8) New speakers There is an extremely important, but often ignored, grammatical rule that whenever a different person starts speaking (or thinking) something, you start a new paragraph. (9) Check spelling & grammar This one is pretty basic. Poor spelling and/or grammar makes things very difficult to read and can alienate your audience. (i.e. they may tend to place less value on what you have to say if you don't care enough about your writing to be sure its spelling and grammar are correct.) The biggest problems here are homonyms like there/their, its/it's, your/you're, soul/sole, etc. Also, the words "alot" and "alright" *do not exist!* These are separate words which are commonly, but improperly, combined. (10) Electronic writing conventions Since we're using only letters, numbers, and the more basic special characters to write things for the lists, certain conventions have evolved to help get around that. To emphasize a word that would normally be italicized, put *asterisks* around it. To indicate underlining, put an _underscore_ before and after the word/phrase. And, most importantly, don't yell unless you mean to. TYPING IN ALL CAPS IS THE WRITTEN EQUIVALENT OF YELLING AND IS VERY ANNOYING, AS WELL AS DIFFICULT TO READ. III. Forever Knight-the show A. Behind the scenes 1. The Rick Springfield TV movie The TV movie _Nick Knight_, starring Rick Springfield in the title role, was aired by CBS on August 20, 1989. It was intended as a pilot for a series, but wasn't picked up. The movie is available on home video (ISBN 1-56068-217-5). The same script, with only minor changes (at least one of which was an ad-lib by Mr. Bennett), was used in the "Dark Knight" episodes of Forever Knight. When discussing this movie on the list, it is usually referred to as either "NK" or "Rick's Nick." 2. I just discovered FK this fall, what's all this about old episodes? Where was it before syndication? The first season aired in the US on CBS, as part of their Crimetime After Primetime lineup. From May 1992 to August 1993, it was on Tuesday nights at 23:35 Eastern/Pacific. When David Letterman moved from NBC to CBS, the show was taken off the air entirely, but returned November 9, 1993 on Tuesday nights following Letterman, and ran in the timeslot until August 23, 1994. CBS' broadcast rights to these episodes expire won't expire until September 1995, so they can't be broadcast elsewhere in the US until then. All but one of the original cast returned for the second season; Gary Farmer did not return to the role of Captain Joseph Stonetree. 3. When and where is the satellite feed for the stations? As of this writing, the known feeds are (all times are Eastern US): Monday 0300-0400, G4/21 Tuesday 1900-2000, T1/01 Wednesday 1?00-1?00, T1/17 4. How many episodes are there? The first season had 22 episodes. The second season will have 26. 5. Footage cut by CBS from first season episodes The versions of first season episodes aired in Canada, Australia, Germany and wherever else outside the US the show has run are 47 minutes each; the versions aired in the United States were 40 minutes. (Please note that running times include opening and closing credits.) According to people who have seen both the US and Canadian versions, the main things cut are flashback sequences, present-day Nick asking Janette for advice about various things, and big chunks of the opening and closing credits. Transcripts of most of the missing material have been posted at various times to FORKNI-L. The second season episodes are the same length wherever they are broadcast. 6. Where can I get tapes of the longer versions? Currently, legal tapes are not available anywhere. Large amounts of illegal swapping happens, but I will not give information on who to talk to about that in this FAQL. For a while, Ashland Video in Toronto was selling high quality copies of the Canadian versions, but these are/were extremely illegal bootlegs. If you ever have the opportunity to buy some of these "Ashland Tapes," please *don't*! If the second season is successful, Columbia may release the Canadian versions of the first season on home video. 7. I have a script I want to submit. How do I do this? You don't. They aren't currently accepting scripts, nor are they likely to in the foreseeable future. If/when they do, they will require scripts be submitted through an agent. Also, if they do start accepting scripts, since the show is made in Canada by a Canadian company, they will have to follow the Canadian government's regulations which require them to only accept scripts from Canadian citizens or residents. (They are allowed a very few exceptions, but those will very likely go only to people who know the executive producer personally, so your chances of being one of those exceptions are pretty much nil.) 8. Should I post it to FKFIC-L? **!!NO!!** If you seriously want to submit a script, don't post it or let people you don't know read it. If you have a script you don't want to submit, go right ahead and post it--we'd love to read it. But if you're thinking you might want to actually submit it at some point, keep it off the list!! The same applies to posting any script or book or whatever in any genre, especially Star Trek. The reason for this is the extremely high chance for plagiarism. Something posted to an electronic list or newsgroup will be distributed around the world, completely out of your control. If someone wants to download something and submit it as their own, proving that it's yours can be difficult (if not impossible) as well as expensive. Also, publishers and studios will usually automatically reject anything they receive which has previously been posted as a matter of policy (assuming they know it's been posted, which they may ask you about). The fact that it's been posted means that hundreds or thousands of people already have copies and/or have already read it, reducing the potential market, and hence the amount of money they can make from it. The only place this has really come up in a big way is with Star Trek fiction, so I'm generalizing a bit, applying Paramount's policies to other studios and publishers, but this has come up elsewhere as well. A subscriber to the VAMPYRES@GUVM list was unable to get a book she wrote published, partly because the editors didn't like it, and partly because she had previously posted it to that list. (She ended up publishing it herself, at a monetary loss.) Quanta (ISSN 1053-8496) and Intertext (ISSN 1071-7676) magazines (both of which are distributed by e-mail through Internet) have semi-firm policies against accepting stories previously posted to lists or newsgroups, and it's reasonable to assume that professional magazines probably have similar, but firmer, policies. Others may have different policies, but as a general rule, it's a good idea to restrict distribution of your writings if you want them professionally published or filmed or whatever. However, rejected things originally written for professional publication or filming do occasionally show up on the network. These are distinctly different because the publisher/studio has turned them down, so the author has nothing to gain from continuing to restrict distribution of their work. The examples I'm thinking of here are the various rejected Star Trek novels and scripts that are posted to alt.startrek.creative by their authors after being rejected by from Paramount. 9. How do they do the eye color change thing? In the first season, this was done with special yellow contact lenses. They were very painful for the actors and special eye- numbing drops had to be used to make it possible to wear them for any period of time. However, when used repeatedly, the eye drops cause tissue damage, which the actors weren't told about until they had been using the drops for some time and were scheduled for appointments to check for any damage to their eyes. In the new episodes, they are using different lenses, made in Italy, which reflect any color shone on them, instead of just yellow and were supposed to be easier to wear. Unfortunately, they are at least as painful as the old lenses, if not more so (so they're still using the eyedrops) and they can't really see anything with the lenses in. The first time Geraint wore them, he ran into a camera during filming. Ever since, he has worn the older lenses in scenes which require him to move around while wearing them. 10. What about the yellow glow around their eyes? In the first season, that was done by shining a flashlight in the actor's eyes -- a flashlight with a yellow lens and pieces of cardboard taped to the front to make the beam rectangular. In the second season, they are using lights attached to the cameras. 11. Who performs all that really cool music? All music on Forever Knight is written and performed by Fred Mollin, using a Kurtzweil synthesizer. All female vocals are performed by Toronto singer Lori Yates. 12. Can FK vampires be seen in mirrors? They didn't originally intend for them to be visible in mirrors, but it was shown on screen in several episodes, including the premiere. (The necessary special effects were too expensive.) However, in one of the scenes cut from the US version of "Father Figure," Nick says he can be seen in mirrors "only sometimes." 16. What do they use for blood? Ribena, a black currant drink not generally available in the US. It is supposed to be diluted with water before drinking, but in order to have the approximate consistency of blood, they use it undiluted, which makes the actors sick because it is so sweet. 17. Is the George Kapelos listed in the credits of "Dead Issue" related to John Kapelos? Yes, it's his brother. George played Arthur, the guy with the bow tie who mispronounced Schanke's name as "Shank." 18. Do the producers of FK know about FORKNI-L and/or FKFIC-L? Yes; one of FORKNI-L's concealed subscribers is a castmember, though he reads mail only irregularly due to lack of time. We also have friends of other castmembers, at least one writer, and rumors of production company people. Also, the fanzine Forever Net, which prints fiction posted to FKFIC-L, is mentioned in the show's publicity material. 19. Who are Roland and Sharibet, and which episode did they appear in? If you're new to FORKNI-L and/or FKFIC-L, you may be a little confused about occasional references to characters called Roland and Sharibet, and if you haven't seen all the episodes, you may think you've missed something. Fortunately, this isn't the case. Roland d'Agincourt (Nick's cousin, also a vampire) and Sharibet, who converted both Roland and LaCroix, are non-canon characters who have appeared in several FKFIC-L stories. These characters are property of Marian Huntsman Gibbons, and may not be used in any fiction without her express permission. 20. Forever Knight references in other shows a. Highlander In the episode "Turnabout," special guest star Geraint's character's girlfriend was named Jeanette. In the episode "The Vampire," the vampire was named Nick. b. The X-Files In the FK episode "Dead Issue," one of the guest characters was a cop named Tony Fiori, who was involved in a murder. In the XF episode "Born Again," one of the guest characters was a cop named Tony Fiore (pronounced the same as "Fiori"), who was involved in a murder. Editor's note: We have no official confirmation that any of these are deliberate references, so they could just be coincidence. B. Story related stuff 1. When did Nick move to Toronto & where did he live before that? 1989 and Chicago. ("Dark Knight," when he talks with Janette the first time.) He is a Cubs fan and says he would have stayed in Chicago if he'd known they would be putting lights in Wrigley Field. 2. How old is Nick and where is he from? As far as the Toronto PD is concerned, he's 36 (January 1, 1958) and he's from Chicago ("Hunters"). We don't know for sure where he's really from or exactly how old he is. He says he's 800, which matches with a conversion date of 1228 and puts his birth date sometime around 1200. As to where he's from, in the "For I Have Sinned" flashback, Joan of Arc called him "Nicolas of Brabant." (Which would have been "de Brabant in French; see next question.) When asked at TorontoTrek, Geraint said he didn't know if that meant Nick is actually from Brabant, or if he was just calling himself that. He could very well be from France, or Britain, or some part of the Empire other than Brabant. 3. If we assume he's from "Brabant," what's that & where is it? The Medieval duchy of Brabant, in the northwestern part of the Holy Roman Empire. The area that was Brabant is now in the southern part of the Netherlands and central and north Belgium. If Nick really is from Brabant, the fact that he was a knight using the surname "de Brabant" implies he is/was probably part of its royal family. 4. How old is LaCroix and where is he from? Again, we don't have much firm information. In a flashback sequence from "Dark Knight part 2" (cut in US version) which was reused in "I Will Repay," he said he knew Nero, so that makes him at least 2000. This also matches with the executive producer's belief that LaCroix was originally Roman. 5. How old is Janette and where is she from? 1000 and Paris. ("Fate Worse Than Death") 6. How old is Natalie & when is her birthday? She was born in June 1962 ("Only the Lonely"), so she's 32. 7. What kind of car does Nick drive & why that kind of car? "The 1962 Cadillac has more trunk space than any car built in the last 30 years." -- Nick in "Dark Knight" 8. What is Nick's address? 101 Gateway Lane ("Dark Knight" and several others), which is supposedly in the vicinity of the corner of Duluth and Superior ("I Will Repay"). However, other addresses are given on his badge and the precinct computer. 9. What is Nick's license plate number? 35H MV6 ("Father Figure") 10. What is the call sign of Nick's car? 81-Kilo 11. Will Schanke ever find out about Nick? "Are you NUTS?!?" --Geraint's answer when asked that question at TorontoTrek '93 He elaborated a bit, explaining how it would ruin the show and eliminate the Schanke character's dramatic purpose. "He's too busy eating souvlaki to know what's going on--he's the foil. Nigel is the dark foil and he's the comic foil." 12. What is that "souvlaki" stuff Schanke talks about all the time? Very spicy Greek shish kabob, usually made with lots of garlic. 13. What is Schanke's favorite TV show? _I Dream of Jeannie._ ("Father Figure") 14. What's in those bottles in Nick's refrigerator? Cow's blood ("Cherry Blossoms"). In "Father Figure," there were IV bags of human blood in the freezer. (The girl mistook them for pasta sauce.) However, the human blood was apparently removed sometime after that, since he wasn't questioned about it during the Internal Affairs investigation in "Killer Instinct." 15. When & why did Nick stop killing people for food? This is explained in episode 22, "Love You to Death." For the full story, I suggest you see that episode. Sometime in the 1890's, Nick fell in love with a ballet dancer. LaCroix convinced Nick she wasn't the paragon of purity he imagined her to be, but was a prostitute. With that belief, Nick seduced and killed her, only to discover that LaCroix had been lying and her statement that she was in love with Nick as well had been the truth. The resentment he felt for LaCroix was so strong that he vowed never to kill for food again and he started searching in earnest for a way to become human again. 16. What are all the things Nick's remote controls? The window blinds, the entertainment center, the answering machine ("Last Act"), and the fireplace. 17. What is Nick's answering machine message? First season: "Yeah, Nick Knight. I'm either in bed or incommunicado, so if you want to leave your name and number, go ahead." --"Dark Knight" Second season: "This is Nick Knight. I'm not in or I'm asleep. Leave a message and don't take it personally. --"Killer Instinct" 18. Is the guy in the "Hunters" flashback John Kapelos? No. Mr. Kapelos believes it's his stunt double. 19. Will Dr. Alyce Hunter ("Dark Knight") be back? No. She was originally supposed to make 3 appearances, but the producers didn't like her, so they bought out her contract for the others. When asked at TorontoTrek, Geraint said he didn't know why they didn't like her. We generally assume it was because of the severe lack of chemistry between Christine Reeves & Geraint. 20. Who is this Richard person people keep talking about? Crown Prosecutor Richard Lambert was Natalie's brother. The episode "I Will Repay" centered on his conversion to vampirism by Nick (after being fatally wounded and Nat begged & pleaded with Nick to bring him over), and his inability to deal with it. 21. Who is this Sidney person people keep talking about? Sidney Lambert is Natalie's housecat -- a very passive gray tabby. So far, he has only appeared on the show in one episode ("Only the Lonely"), but he is very popular with many of the people on these lists, and has appeared in numerous FKFIC-L stories. 22. What is the opening narration and whose voice is it? It's Nigel Bennett's voice, but whether it's supposed to be LaCroix or just Nigel has been a point of some debate. "He was brought across in 1228, Preyed on humans for their blood. Now, he wants to be mortal again, To repay society for his sins. To emerge from his world of darkness, From his endless forever night." 23. When did Nick join the Toronto police force? The computer screen in "Hunters" said he transferred from the Chicago police force in 1991. Obviously, since he arrived in Toronto two years earlier, he didn't really transfer from the Chicago police, but he must have joined the Toronto force in 1991 since Stonetree would have known if that part was wrong. However, his badge in "Dances by the Light of the Moon" says he was hired October 1, 1990. 24. Did Captain Stonetree know about Nick? There has been quite a bit of discussion about this. The general consensus is that he suspects Nick is hiding something, but there is a great deal of disagreement about exactly what he thinks is going on. Some think he knows or suspects Nick is a vampire and isn't saying anything because Nick is a good cop. Others think he knows something's strange, but he either doesn't know or doesn't want to know what's really going on. Unfortunately, the question is strictly academic now, since Gary Farmer didn't return to the show. 25. What does Nick's badge in "Dance by the Light of the Moon" say? Name: Nick Knight Address: 7 Curity Avenue 37th Precinct Date of Birth: (blank) Age: 31 In the lower left corner, is the date October 1, 1990 26. What's on the computer screen in "Hunters?" At the end of "Father Figure," what happened to Daniel? We don't know. The Canadian version of the episode leaves that question just as open as the US version. There has been speculation that he's still wandering around, while others think LaCroix and/or Janette got tired of playing "loving" parents and killed him. 28. Background newspaper caption in "Spin Doctor." In the tabloid publisher's office, on the wall behind him was the front page from an old issue of his paper. The caption for what looked like a picture of an old Elvis Presley was: DECEASED ROCK STAR ALIVE HE IS 400 YEAR OLD VAMPIRE This could be a reference to NK, where Nick was only 400 years old, and he was played by rock star Rick Springfield. 29. How are vampires created in the Forever Knight universe? The "Exchange" of blood is all done through the fangs. Just as they can ingest blood through them they can also inject blood back the other way. When a vampire brings another person over, he/she is passing on their blood into the system of the victim. It is true that in the first season, we were all over the map when it came to vampire rules. When do fangs come out?: When do eyes turn yellow?: Vamp hearing?: etc. Jim is trying this year to be more consistent and adher to established or soon to be established vampirisms. Our idea for FOREVER NET is "an electronic zine in a paper format." Only fiction posted on FKFIC-L (and FORKNI-L, if vignettes and such show up there) shall be considered for publication. Posting to these lists does NOT automatically ensure that an item will be printed, only that it will be considered. 2. "Electronic" tends to rule out illustrations. For the time being, Allen B.'s computer graphics from Photosurrealism are all we are using as illustration and cover design. However, if you are a computer graphics wiz, talk to us. 3. What we're looking for for "Forever Net" are stories that are well-plotted, well-written, and well-planned out. We may ask for minor changes or re-writes of promising stories before we print them. Don't be offended if we do, we just want to help you improve an already good story. AT NO TIME will the editor make changes to a story (other than spelling and punctuation) without the express permission of the author; and if you can put up a good enough defense for a scene or section or phrase we want changed to stay the way you wrote it we might even back down. 4. No story will be published without the author's permission. Therefore, if you simply want to post to FKFIC-L, no one will force you to publish in FN. 5. After publication, all rights revert back to the author. (So if you want to get your story printed somewhere else after it has appeared in FN, you have every right to do so. We'd like to be told, though, as a courtesy.) 6. Only fiction original to FKFIC-L and FORKNI-L will be published in this zine (i.e., no reprints from other zines). 7. No explicit sex--if it couldn't get a PG-13 rating, we won't use it. There are other zines for that. 8. No "slash" (explicit same-sex) stories. See comment on no. 7. 9. At this time, we are considering prose submissions only. However, we may make allowances for alternative submissions of exceptional quality. 10. At this time, we aren't considering cross-over universe stories. If you have a good one you want published, we might know of a few places you can submit it. Or if a lot of good ones show up, we might do a special issue. 11. We do not have any minimum or maximum lengths set. However, we only have about 200 pages of space, and it is the editor's personal preference to avoid serialized stories (sequels are okay, even encouraged, but I like to have complete stories in each issue).
