In the midst of it, a small light breaks through. Chunks of rock give way as a man (Hamid) breaks into a room. It is an ancient Egyptian burial chamber.] HK: [In Egyptian] I'm through the stone. H: [On the radio. In Egyptian also] We only have an hour before the security patrol returns. HK: You're sure it's the middle sarcophagus? H: Yes. Look for Re'-Atum -- the Sun God. [Hamid finds the sarcophagus and dusts off the top.] HK: What if the legend is true? What if Ah-Hotep (?) decides my soul is not worthy and I am destroyed? H: The only thing you have to worry about deals with the treasure. [Hamid breaks the seal of the Sun god. A crack grows wider across the width of the sarcophagus. A bright light eminates from it.] Hamid, what's going on? Hamid?! [Hamid screams.] Hamid!! [Darkness] OPENING CREDITS He was brought across in 1228. Preyed on humans for their blood. Now, he wants to be mortal again, to repay society for his sins. To emerge from his world of darkness...from his endless, forever knight. COMMERCIAL [Outside the Raven. LaCroix walks up to the door and is about to open it. He hesitates, then looks around. Something is watching him. He shrugs and walks in. It leaves.] [Exterior-Police station. Nick walks in to the precinct and up to his desk. Tracy is sitting at her desk and Captain Reese is standing next to it. They're having a discussion.] T: Jeffrey Dalhmer or John Wayne Gacy? [Quickly to Nick] Hi. [He sits down at his desk.] R: Betty-Ann McKinsey. [Nick gives them a questioning look.] T: [To Nick] Most deranged serial killers. [To Reese] Who's Betty-Ann McKinsey? R: August 16, '74. Betty-Ann murders three children. She binds and gags the parents and makes them watch -- kills the children slowly. The parents commit suicide in the next two years. N: Why'd she do it? R: She said it was fun. T: You're making this up, Captain. R: No, no. You've got to remember, back in those days, that kind of sickness was reserved for the underground tabloid rags. I mean, we bitch about the news nowadays, but we have things like childwatch. We've got stalker laws now. First defense against evil, open your damn eyes. [He walks into his office. The phone on Nick's desk rings and he picks it up.] N: Homicide. Detective Knight. Female Voice: There's a corpse in the Raven. N: Who is this? [The caller hangs up. Tracy gives him a questioning look.] [The Raven: LaCroix walks through the Raven, looking around. He smiles and opens the door to his office. On the couch is Urs, cuddled next to Vachon. They wake up.] V: Um... It's not what you think. LC: How disappointing. V: Ah. Actually it's a -- U: [Cutting him off] I asked him to come here. I was afraid. LC: Of? [He turns to open his "wine" cabinet.] U: I was asleep downstairs and I had a nightmare of children with their heads cut off. [LaCroix looks startled. He quickly recovers and masks his emotions.] And when I woke up -- I'm sure I was awake -- and there was a headless child standing over me. And then she was gone. So I came up here to call Vachon, and that's when I felt a presence. LC: A presence. U: Something was here. I don't know what, but it was evil. LC: Yes, well, this all seems very interesting, but I do have a club to open. [He takes out two bottles. They walk out past him. Something is watching them from above. Urs and Vachon walk out of the Raven. LaCroix walks out of the office with the two bottles, looks around for a few seconds and walks towards the bar. He places the bottles on the counter and opens a beer fridge. he quickly closes it and opens the next one. In both of them is the remains of a headless, mutalated body. Next to the beer fridge is a small box {size of a hatbox}. He places it on the counter, looks at it for a moment and quickly opens it. Inside, is a layer of green tissue paper. He takes it off. Under it is another layer of green tissue paper. On top is a large chain necklace. It is the same cameo that Divia had. He picks it up.] [Flashback] [LaCroix and Divia are moving through the tunnels of an Egyptian tomb.] D: Can you not feel the presence in here, Father? LC: Yes. D: What do you feel? LC: Evil. [Present] [The Raven: LaCroix takes off the next layer of tissue paper. Beneath, is a decapitated head. The doors of the Raven crash open as Nick and Tracy enter with three officers. All guns, except Nick's, are pointed at LaCroix. He slips the cameo into his jacket pocket. N: [cordially] Put your hands where we can see them. Please. LC: I think you'll find what you're looking for here, [indicating the box] and there [indicating the fridge]. [Police Station: Interrogation room: Reese is pacing in front of LaCroix, Tracy is standing in the front and a little off to the right, and Nick is leaning on the wall in the far left corner.] R: You have no idea how the body got there? LC: [raspy voice] None. R: No thoughts on who the victim might be, Mr. LaCroix? LC: No. T: Who has access to your club after the off hours? LC: No one. R: You *DO* have a staff, don't you? T: Presumably, the beer fridges were stocked after closing time. When was that? LC: Six AM. Although I don't recall any of my staff reporting a decapitated corpse in the beer fridge. R: Assuming you didn't put it there after they left. LC: [Looking hard at him. Very quite, raspy voice.] Yes, assuming that. T: You spent the night at home? LC: [Normal voice] The club is my home. I went for a stroll shortly after sundown. I can only assume that the body was deposited while I was away. R: [Sarcastically] Right. Someone breaks in, stuffs the corpse into a fridge, and gift-wraps the head for you. Just for the hell of it. LC: It is my understanding that discovering a motive is your job. N: Perhaps you should call a lawyer. R: Of course, we'd have to read you your rights in that case. The charge is murder one. LC: [Small laughter] You may charge me with murder if you wish. Based on the evidence...naturally. R: [Pause] I want him held as a material witness. [He leaves the room, followed by Tracy. Nick walks towards LaCoix from the corner. They meet, face to face, by the door.] LC: Your associates are not without character. N: And your associates, who might've been sleeping in the basement? LC: They had nothing to do with this, Nicholas. You know that. I have a question for you. How did your people come to know about the body in the first place? N: An anonymous tip. [The door opens as Capt. Reese and Tracy walk in with officers.] [Tracy and Capt. Reese watch as LaCroix is being led to the holding cells from a nearby desk.] R: He may not be guilty of this, but he sure as hell guilty of something. [Exterior: Police Station: Back enterance. Traacy looks around as she walks out the back of the station towards her car. Vachon meets her there.] T: Thanks for coming by on such short notice. V: [Flipping a coin.] You forget. Time is reletive. T: The guy who owns the Raven -- LaCroix? V: Uh huh. T: We got a tip about a murder there. All we found was LaCroix and the victim. And the head was severed from the body. We're holding LaCroix as a material witness. [Two officers exit the station. Vachon flies off. Tracy picks up the coin Vachon dropped. Vacchon knocks on the window of Tracy's car -- from the inside. She opens the door.] V: It's warmer in here. [She gets in.] T: Is LaCroix one of you? V: [Thinking for a moment.] No. T: There was something -- it was a presence -- it felt evil. If it wasn't LaCroix, then what was it? V: Tracy, it's not [inaudible]. T: Don't run me aroundhere, Vachon. You know what I mean. Evil's a part of you. That's why we'd never work. V: What? T: It's in you. I can feel it and it scares me. V: What's that got to do with what happened at the Raven? T: I don't know. I was hoping you could tell me. V: [Running a hand through her hair.] Sorry. T: Would you do me a favor? V: Sure. T: [Hesitates as if she was going to say something and decides to stop.] Give me a call when you get home. [ Vachon gives her a little look and gets out of the car.] V: [Something is watching them.] See you later. [He walks down the street, away from the station and turns in to an alley where he hears a little girl crying. He walks up to her.] Hey! You okay? [She's still crying.] Did someone hurt you? D: [Grabbing his arm and twisting it. Vachon is much weaker than her.] Lucius hurt me. My father. My son. He betrayed me. Even after I raised him from the ashes of Pompeii. You will pay for his sins. [She bites him. Vachon screams and slumps over. Divia flies off.] COMMERCIAL Date: Tue, 17 Dec 1996 00:29:49 -0500 (EST) From: Amanda Sridasome Subject: Ashes to Ashes, transcript (2/5) To: syren@interaccess.com, fkarchiver@fkfanfic.com Ashes to Ashes, transcript, part 2 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= [Coroner's office: Natalie, at her desk, puts her phone on speaker. Nick and Tracy are standing by the exam table.] N: Yeah, Captain. What's the news? R: The word is -- are you sitting down? [Nick and Tracy exchange looks. Cut to Reese sitting at his desk.] Egyptian police came back with a positive on the Raven fridge crasher. His name is Hamid Karam. He and his brother, Hashim, are, ah, grave robbers. N: Egypt? R: [on speaker] They were searching a sarcophagus in a burial chamber or something. [Cut to Reese in his office] Some priest named Ah-Hotep in the valley of the kings. According to the report, [cut to coroner's office] the brother lost radio contact with Hamid about 24 hours ago. When he checked the tomb, there was no sign of Hamid. Only his radio and the blood. [Silence. In his office] Are you there? T: [Coroner's office] Yeah, Captain. Just a little dumbfounded, I guess. R: [His office] We have a major problem here, people. See, we're not the only ones wondering how in the Hell an Egyptian nationalist [Coroner's office] in the tomb of the dead, winds up in a Toronto beer fridge. {inaudable} {What's the verdict?} NA: Oh, well, time of death is about twenty-four hours. Cause of death, not to get too technical about it, I, ah, [Reese's office] think he was torn to shreds. R: By what? NA: [Coroner's office] Well, I was going to say that it was a wild animal, but considering he was in a burial chamber, I guess that wouldn't make much sense, does it? R: Well, time frame is enough to smuggle the body into Canada. No wild animal did that. [Coroner's office] Figure out who did. Later. [Hangs up] NA: [Looking at Nick and Tracy, trying to lighten the mood an reason with them] Oh come on. There has got to be some kind of a rational explanation for all this. N: [quickly] I guess that clears LaCroix. T: Yeah. I guess so. [Police station: Holding cell: The people are huddled together on a bench as far away from LaCroix as possible. He stands in a corner, closest to the door. Nick walks up to him.] LC: [Glancing at the huddled people.] Clearly I have a future as a sobering influence on the disenfrancised. N: [Quietly, trying to smother a grin] You're to be released. Lack of evidence. You're refridgerator friend was Hamid Karam--a grave robber. He was looting an ancient burial chamber in the valley of the kings. The tomb of Ah-Hotep. [Flashback] [LaCroix and Divia are standing next to the sarcophagus.] D: The tomb of Ah-Hotep, chief priest of the Pharoah Rac, son of the Sun God, Ra, Lord of Heaven, or some such nonsense. It is the middle one, flanked by two other priest, or so the people believe. LC: Why have you brought me here, Divia? D: It is him, my master, my true father. He chose me. Created me before Vesuvius erupted. LC: The healer. The ancient one. D: Kahaha, said to be among the first of our kind. He lived before the pyramids were build. Long before. LC: [confused] Why is he in this place? D: It is here that he was destroyed; staked, scorched by the sun, and interred, with the symbol of the sun god. LC: But who did this? Did you take revenge on his killer? D: [small laugh] I could hardly have done so, Lucius, since *I* killed him. [LaCroix looks horrified] [Present: Same as before flashback. LaCroix is still in his flashback.] N: LaCroix? [He snaps out of it.] LC: [briskly] Yes, well, I played according to yor rules for long enough, Detective. If I am to be released, release me. N: [amused. He supresses a grin. To the officer at the door.] Officer. [He comes over to open the cell.] [Vachon's church: Urs walks around slowly, cautiously.] U: Javier? Vachon? I know you're here. [She walks around. Vachon comes up from behind and grabs her.] What are you doing?! V: [He's in pain.] Leave! Ah! Make it stop! Make it... make it. Make it stop. [He doubles over] U: [rushing over to him] Make what stop, Vachon? Make *what* stop? V: The killing. I can't stop the killing. Men, women and children, especially children. I've been killing and being killed. I can't stand the pleasure. U: Vachon, look at me. Look at me. V: Urs... U: Who did this to you? V: [getting a myriad of scenes] Daughter. Mother. Daughter. U: What's happening to you. V: I see her visions--her memories. U: Who's visions? Who's memories? Vachon, who did this to you? Who's got you? V: She was so sweet. Evil. [He screams.] Get out, Urs! Get out! Before you are destroyed here. Staked, scorched by the sun. U: {inaudible} V: Urs. Go. Please. [She hurries out.] [Police station: The phone rings on Tracy's desk. She picks it up.] T: Vetter. V: [cut to the church] Tracy, I know who's doing this. I know why that body was at the Raven. T: [cut to station] Vachon. [Cut to church. He drops the phone, grabs his waist, and screams in pain.] Vachon? To be left alone in the darkness? Humph. I didn't think so. But you will know soon enough. As your friends die, and the fear of death drives those still alive away from you. LC: Twenty years after Pompeii, I thought her dead and buried, along with the guilt, and the secret one dare not share. Or perhaps it is time to share that secret. [Flashback] [The Egyptain tomb] D: I've upset you. I didn't mean to. LC: Does it not trouble you to have killed your own master? D: Why should I be? LC: He was an ancient. His knowledge of our past, our very beginnings, was worthy of respect. D: You think I was wrong. You think I'm cruel--unfeeling. LC: I didn't say that. D: Yes, you did! I see the way you look at me. After all I've done for you. How can you stand in judgement? LC: Divia, I know that I am here because of you, and I am eternally greatful, but *he* *made* *you*. D: He thought he could control me. He said he brought me across because I was young, and my evil was purer than he'd ever seen. Then he tried to harvest it. To make me in his image. After Pompeii, I would choose my own way. I would do what I had to do to ensure that. [gently] Lucius, I wanted so to explain everything that our nature offered. You understand, don't you? We are free to do as we please. To kill as often as we desire. Bathe in mortal flesh and blood. To do everything that is forbidden. No one can stop us. Everything we lust after can be ours. Including love. LC: *I* had a choice! I could've done as Divia asked. N: And dispised yourself for it. LC: No more so than I do now. As a general in the Emperor's army, I visited suffering upon my enemies in unspeakable ways. I've seen evil on this earth in all it's forms. And yet, there was an evil in my own childe that I could not bear to look upon. An evil that she inherited from me, magnified a hundred times by the one who brought her across. [sorrowfully] My beautiful daughter. N: How did she regenerate, let alone survive all those years? LC: Perhaps the evil that permeated the tomb sustained her. [losing patience] I don't know. Does it really matter? N: Do you think she'll come after you? LC: Not quite yet. There's more killing to be done. N: [He turns to leave, then puts a friendly hand on LaCroix's shoulder.] If you need me. LC: [looking at he hand] Thank you, Nicholas. I never imagined you would rise to the lofty position of ... inkeeper. But, in my brief taste of freedon, I found that nothing in the world is as I expected. LC: Why are you here, Divia? To gloat? D: [gloating] Why not? I've won. You're alone. Now, perhaps, you can begin to feel what it was like for me. The centuries, I expected to spend loving you and caring for you, then to spend it in darkness, and isolaiton. You could not imagine the hatred I have for you. How could you have done that to me, Father? I loved you! [She throws him over the bar.] LC: [on his knees, trying to stand. hoarse voice.] You are a sick, depraved, little girl! LC: Then my wish has come true, and all that remains is for you to kill me. [She releases her hold on his neck.] D: And deny the pain and lonelyness? No. You must exist forever, with the knowledge that you destroyed everyone who is dear to you. Your friend, lover, daughter, mother, and now, your son. LC: What do you mean? D: Nichola, I believe, was his name. One always recognizes family. But he was your favourite, wasn't he? [He gets up and tries to strike, but she grabs his arm and twists it. He gives a throated scream in pain.] Your son is dead! How does that feel? Tell me how it feels. [She hurts him even more.] LC: I'm not going to let you leave here, Divia. There's enough misery in the world already. D: Oh, but there's always room for more. [She throws him against the studio booth.] Are you going to stop me, General? You and as they say, "who's army?" [She throws him through through the glass of his broadcasting booth and holds his neck over the jagged glass.] Poor, Father. Does it hurt? How does it hurt? You feel it. Say you feel it. Say you're sorry. Tell me that you love me. Go on, face it. LC: You kill me, my suffering will be over. [She releases him.] D: You know, I'm not sure that's true. Damnation, when I come to think of it is a fitting sentence for your crimes. [She pulls out a scythe.] Remember this, Father? LC: When we were mortal, I loved you more than the Gods. [disgusted] And now, how can anyone love anything as grotesque as you? [She raises the scythe. All of a sudden, a stake protrudes through her. She turns to the side, and there stands Nick, fully healed. She falls to the floor. Nick moves to stand next to LaCroix, who is standing up.] D: [She gasps for breath, pleading with LaCroix.] Father... LC: Divia. [He tries to move to her.] N: [Restraining LaCroix.] No. D: [weakly] Don't let me die. LC: Divia. [He tries to move to her again.] N: [Restraining him.] No! D: Father... [She coughs and gasps for breath, and dies. Both Nick and LaCroix release held breaths.] COMMERCIAL TAG [Nick and LaCroix are standing in front of a funeral pyre. Divia's body is wrapped up and lying on top of an old car. Obviously, they are in a junkyard. Nick is standing to LaCroix's right. Steele drum fires are lit nearby. LC: They say that there's no greater suffering for a parent than to outlive his childe. Fortunately, there ARE exceptions. I never thought I'd say this, Nicholas, but for once, I'm glad of your incessive search for your humanity. Perhaps your resurgent goodness was all that was needed to defeat Divia's evil. N: Urs and Vachon were young. They didn't know how to deal with it. I'm sorry for your loss, LaCroix. LC: Thank you. [sighs] Urs' body? N: I had Natalie take care of that. LC: And Vachon? N: Tracy buried him next to Screed. LC: Indeed. [pause] Is this going to be a problem? N: Vachon once told me she's a resistor. [He moves to LaCroix's left side.] But, [grinning] I've seen you work around that. LC: What exactly would you like her to remember? N: Taht Vachon was a good friend--a vampire who decided it was time to move on. LC: A vampire? N: Her knowledge of our existance was Vachon's gift to her. We have no right to take that away. LC: If that is what you wish. [He turns his attention to the body.] I will stay here with Divia, until her body is turned to ashes and then commit them to the wind. I may even say a prayer. [Nick looks startled.] N: [Taking a long look at LaCroix, then puts a reassuring hand on his shoulder. LaCroix holds it ofr a second.] Good night, LaCroix. [He turns and starts walking away.] LC: Nicholas... [Nick flies off. LaCroix takes a burning piece of wood from one of the drums and torches the body. He watches it burn.] END CREDITS
