He knocks on the windshield.] MI: Hey, Lady, are you alright? [cut to drummers. She wakes up and gives an anguished shout.] MS: Emite hanc mulerium! MI: What? [cut to drummers and back to MacIssac.] Hey? Hey, lady. Dispatch, this is Badge 1037. I'm on Delany and Sundance. I have an unconscious female, mid thirties in a Dodge Aries. License number, Romeo, Kilo, Papa, Nine, Six, Eight... [The lady wakes up and starts the car, putting her foot on the accelerator. MacIssac is thrown into the street and screams in pain.] Aaah! Aah! It explodes.] OPENING CREDITS He was brough across in 1228. Preyed on humans for their blood. Now, he wants to be mortal again. To repay society for his sins. To emerge from his world of darkness ... from his endless, forever night. COMMERCIAL [Delany and Sundance: Police and ambulence are at the scene where MacIssac was hit by the car. Nick and Tracy walk up to Reese.] N: How's MacIssac? R: Oh. Broken arm, broke and concussion. Otherwise, okay. [He looks at the two of them.] Shouldn't you two be on the Slater homicide? N: Yeah. We're waiting on the prelims and there could be more to this than it seems. T: We got a squawk from 89. A car went over the expressway, little after Brian radioed it in. The license plates matched. R: Someone in the car? N: We have to wait on the autopsy to get a positive ID. The car was regestered to a Melanie Sawchuck. She lives over on Homewood. [Gesturing to MacIssac] Can we talk to him? R: I doubt you'd get anything. Hardly knows his own name. [Tracy goes up to him.] T: Hey, Brian, feel like talking? [He stares ahead blankly.] R: I told you so. N: [Walking up to MacIssac] Let me try. [He stares at MacIssac's eyes.] Tell me what happened. [He looks up at Nick.] MI: She's alive. Her pulse. N: The woman in the car? MI: I can't understand what she's saying. N: Try to remember. MS: [vo] Emite hanc mulerium B: Emite... hanc... mulerium... [He's out cold] N: [Gesturing to the paramedics.] He's all yours. R: Did that make any sense to you? N: Sounded like Latin. Who knows? [He starts to walk away.] R: Well, until something moves on the Slater case, you might as well run with this. [Coroner's office: Nick and Tracy walk into Natalie's lab. She's in there with a covered body.] NA: Burn victims. My worst nightmare. Here, put a little of this wintergreen gel under your nose. [She hands a small jar to Tracy.] N: How are you doing? NA: Oh, that's the second jar I've gone through tonight. N: Do we have anything? NA: It's Melanie Sawchuck alright. Dental records confirmed it. T: You had to go into her mouth? [She's beginning to look a bit sick.] N: [to Natalie] What else? NA: I'm about to start the internal, but I don't think you want to stick around for that. N: No, it wouldn't be my first choice. NA: Oh! Records called in with a "next of" for you. The only living reletive is a brother. Name is Eric Sawchuck. [She hands them a paper.] Here's the number. N: Thanks. [They leave. Natalie takes a quick look at a badly burned hand sticking out from under the cloth, and quickly covers it.] [They drive up in front of an adult place. A man (Eric Sawchuck) is standing in front, handing people pamphlets as they walk by. Nick and Tracy walk up to him.] N: Mr. Sawchuck? Detective Knight, Metro Homicide. This is Detective Vetter. [He gestures to Tracy, next to him.] E: I'm not interfering with the patrons of this establishment, Sir. Ishiah, Chapter 55, Verse 7, "Let the wicked forsake his ways, and the unrighteous man, his faults, for the Lord sayeth, 'There is no peace unto the wicked.'" N: This is about your sister, Melanie. I'm afraid she's dead. T: [Seeing no response from Eric.] You DO have a sister nemed Melanie, don't you? E: [calmly] Yes. What happened? N: She drove her car off the Gardener Expressway. T: Do you have any reason to believe that Melanie was suicidal? E: As there is God within us all, so too must there be the Devil. And we do not know what shall prevail. T: [muttering] Great. E: She was a woman of sorrows, and acquainted with grief. N: [cutting in] Ishiah. Chapter 53, Verse 3. [nonchalantly] It's paraphrased. T: Do you know of anyone who wanted to hurt Melanie? E: [Without feeling] No. I'm sorry she's dead. God rest her soul, but I can't help you. [He walks away. They walk back to the Caddy.] T: For a fanatical, he does have his emotions under control. Do you think he knows something? N: Probably. Or it could be just what it looks like--another suicide. [Coroner's office: Nick and Tracy are back there with Natalie.] N: There wasn't a whole lot of work on, but I did come up with one fascinating anomoly. She had traces of lamb's blood in her stomach. T: Lamb's blood? N: And no traces of anything else. My guess is that she drank it, but for the life of me, I can't figure out why. [Nick gets a faraway look, which leads into a:] [Flashback] [The Spanish Inquisition: A dungeon cell. Nicholas and LaCroix are thrown into the cell, that is already occupied by two other prisoner--Sancho, and Ario (chained to a wall). LaCroix is pushed into a stream of sunlight, singes hims hand a bit, and rears back, hurt. The jailer, takes a bucket of blood and paints the frame of the door to the cell with it.] S: La sangre del cordero. La sangre de Jesu Cristo. [Spanish: The blood of the lamb. The blood of Jesus Christ.] Tell me my friends, how you came to be with us. N: They took us as we slept--said we were in league with the Devil. A: [Mumbles something unintelligable in Spanish. The gist of it is:] And offered no evidence? Such is the way with all their victims. They have done that to thousands of other people. LC: This God and this Devil are a mere human contrivance. A convience. They are for the justification for slaughter without the tricky business of accountablity. S: You are also a non-believer. N: [getting lose to Sancho] If there is a God, he has not yet shown himself to me. [LaCroix laughs.] S: For the sake of your souls, do not abandon your faith. Though there may be evil within you, there is God also. You must believe this. It is all that will save you from the excorcism. A: When you speak of the God. To be a free man. To be a deman and face excorcism, how will your pleas save you when you are made to drink the blood of the lamb and your flesh is confisigned to the fire? [Present] [Same as before, Nick snaps out of the flashback.] T: Nick, are you in there? N: Yeah. [hesitantly?] I think we should find out more about Melanie Sawchuck. T: [looking at him funny] Sure. Any particular reason? N: Never hurts to be thorough. Come on. [They leave.] [Nick and Tracy arrive at Melanie Sawchuck's home.] T: So, would you mind telling me why you are so familiar with biblical quotes? N: It's always a good idea to know what the other side is up to. T: So, do we have a murder here? [She goes over to the window, and looks at it.] Hey, there's blood on this glass. Like someone fell through the window. N: Or was thrown? [Nick is studying the window. Tracy goes over to the nightstand to pick up a book. All of a sudden, it gets colder.] T: Did you feel that? [Nick picks up the book and reads the title. Its a book on excorcism.] What? N: The lamb's blood Natalie found in Melanie Sawchuck. In medieval times, certain Christian denomonations used lamb's blood in...excorcisms. Tracy and Captain Reese are in the observation room.] R: Nick's serious about this excorcism thing? T: That room got cold, Captain. We can't explain it. R: There's got to be a rational explanation. Didn't you say the window was smashed? And it IS October. N: Thanks for coming down, Mr. Sawchuck. Okay, we'll get straight to the point. We have reason to believe that your sister, Melanie, was undergoing an excorcism around the time she died. Can you confirm that? [No answer.] Do you know if your sister, Melanie, underwent an excorcism recently? [No answer.] Mr. Sawchuck, you'll feel better if you tell me the truth. I know you're a spiritual man-- you don't want to tell me lies. I know that. E: She was sick, tormented. I tried sending her to doctor, psychiatrists, no one could help. But I knew...her sickness was one of the soul. The goodness in her was being consumed by evil. There is a Devil, Detective, and he is every bit as real as you or I. [Flashback] LC: Tell me, Sancho, how does a man with faith such as your's come to be called a demon? S: I owned valuable land near Barcelona, that I refused to give to the church. That was my heresy! LC: Ah, yes. None greater in the eyes of the Inquisitor. And Ario. S: He is said to be marked by the devil. A: I am no more a demon than you! LC: [small laugh] I quite agree. Why give glory to a Devil other than yourself? [The inquisitor comes in with guards.] I: [pointing to Ario] El es el proximo! {He is the next one!} Fuego! {Fire!} [The guard leads Ario away. He screams and continues to profess his innocense. The Inquisitor looks at Sancho] Beware, for you are next. [Present] [Police Station: Interview room: Nick snaps out of his thoughts. Eric continues speaking.] E: Satan takes hold of people, Detective. He sends forth his angels to seek out the weak--those who no longer have the Lord's light within them. And through his angels, Satan promisses strength, power, and eternity. He is a seducer. He seduced my sister and captured her soul. There is only on way to deal with that. He had to be driven out. N: You sent her to an excorcist. E: I wasn't there. N: The priest... E: At one time he was. N: Have you any idea why your sister would drive off the expressway? E: To free herself from the demon's influence. Isn't it obvious? Our beliefs compell us to act out against Satan. If we do not, his darkness will continue to devour the world until the world is dead. N: A name. What is the excorcist's name. E: Vanderwal. Doctor Max Vanderwal. [Nick leaves the room.] [Nick, Reese, and Tracy are walking through the station.] R: Do you buy a word of what Sawchuck said? N: I really don't know the answer until I see what Vanderwal has to say. T: Do you really believe the Devil exists? N: Well, a lot of people do. Maybe that's all it takes. R: You can bet on it. You just have to look around these days, it's not hard to see the signs. Although if the Devil _did_ make her do it, I would like to see anyone try to prosecute him. We just confirmed Sawchuck's story. If Vanderwal has just as strong an alibi, we'll be able to put this one to bed as a crazy lady suicide. N: Right. [Nick and Tracy arrived at Vanderwal's house. He answers the door.] N: Dr. Vanderwal? V: Yes? N: Detective Knight. Detective Vetter. V: [calmly] I see. T: May we come in? V: Actually, now isn't a very good time. I'm busy. N: This shouldn't take too long. [Nick walks in.] We've been informed that you used to be a priest. Did you retire? V: Excommunicated. The Church frowned rather considerably on my adherance to the old ways of our religion. N: Such as using lamb's bloodin excorcisms? [He takes a glance at a door.] V: Yes. An obscure practice, now condemned as sacraligous, but one I find very effective in instances where Satan has a particularly strong grip on a person. T: So, are you an excorcist? M: Sounds rather frightening, doesn't it? Sometimes, it is. At any rate, I... I've never denied it. I go where I can do what must be done. T: Don't you live in Toronto? V: If evil took up perminent residence here, then so will I. N: Did you know that Melanie Sawchuck was dead? [No answer] You don't seemed surprised. V: No. She was here last night, for a session that didn't go at all well. The demon in her was very powerful. I had hoped with a few more attempts we might suceed. She went home. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. That's all I know. T: Are you suggesting that the Devil killed Melanie? V: Isn't that what you are suggesting? Tell me how she died. T: Her car went off an unfinished section of highway. V: Suicide. If that's what you want to call it. How many suicides are ever fully understood? N: We're not sure it was a suicide. V: Perhaps you never will. I don't suppose you know what it's like to be tormented by evil, Detective Knight. You're wondering what's in that room. I'll show you. [He opens the door. There is a man strapped to a table. Religious objects are all over the room.] You should see for yourself what evil can do. This is Michael. He's in the middle of his fourth session. To a psychologist, he exhibits all signs of clynical depression, but I knew the moment he came to me. T: You think he's possessed? V: If you doubt it, watch. [Leaning over Michael.] I'm speaking to Michael. M: Too bad, Michael isn't here just now. V: Then who am I speaking-- M: I have many names. Take your pick. V: Der octortanten Domini patris quoro nunc omnes demones in ov loco. I seal this room with the blood of Jesus and bind all demons to return whence they came. M: Stop it! You're hurting him! You'e hurting Michael! V: We do not wrestle with flesh and blood, but with powers. With the rulers of darkness of this age. En niminae Jesu. En pero. Un eum oc corpus nos. Release this man. M: [screaming] Must stop it! Stop it! V: I command thee! Corpus eum en pero. [Michael stops struggling. He looks up at Nick.] M: You... are... MINE! [He lunges forwards and Nick staggers backwards. Nick's vampiric nature reveals itself for a brief second. He gets it back under control.] V: En nominae de Patris, de Filio, y de Spirito Santo. [He makes the sign of the cross over Michael.] He is clean. The demon has been driven out. That it was some very elaborate show. Like the wizard said, "Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain." N: What? T: You know? From the Wizard of Oz? You know, I've had my eyes open to some pretty wierd things lately. Stuff that I thought happened in the movies or books. But, I can not accept what we saw at Vanderwal's was a demon being excorsized. You know, Vanderwal is a charlatan. And a very dangerous one at that. What he puts people through [Nick sees a man in black and white standing in the street and swerves not to hit him. Tracy sees no one.] Nick? Nick! Are you okay? What's the matter? N: Nothing. Nothing. I thought there was a cat. [They hear gunshots behind them. Nick and Tracy both pull out their guns and run to the convience store. A man with a shotgun, (Barnes) runs out.] Police! Freeze! [Barnes grabs hold of a girl.] Put your gun down and let her go. B: I swear. I'll blow her head off. N: Let her go. [Hypnotically. In a deep voice.] Put your gun down and let her go. [Barnes lets go of the girl, but still holds his gun. To Tracy.] Take her inside the store. Make sure no one else is hurt. I've got this. Go! [Tracy goes. In a very deep, menacing voice.] Put your gun down. B: My God! What are you! Stay away from me! [Tracy comes out of the store.] God. Sorry, Lord. Forgive me, God. [He shoots himself in the head with the shotgun.] T: Oh my God! [Police station: Nick, Tracy, and Capt. Reese are walking through the station. Tracy's talking to Reese while Nick trails them.] R: Now, this guy, Barnes, was wanted for homicide, rape. He did time for armed robbery too. IA won't be a problem. T: It looked like he was gonna put his gun down. But I don't know. Guess he just lost it. R: No big surprise there either. Suicidal tendencies. See, while he was on the inside, he tried to kill himself on two different occasions. Psyche reports claimed the voices told him to. I don't know. Third time lucky, I guess. Look. The point is, you saved that woman's life tonight. That's all anyone cares about. Period. [Nick walks away.] Damn! Is it freezing in here, or is it just me? T: Um... You don't look well. R: Me and half the precinct. I had to send five guys home tonight. T: [rubbing her nose] So, they still haven't found that smell? R: No. They think there's a sewer pipe ruptured somewhere in the building, that's coming through the system. T: Yeah. I can't believe it. No wonder everyone's sick. This can't be healthy. R: [coughing] Tell me about it. T: [Tracy walks up to Nick's desk. He's shaking.] Nick? Nick, are you okay? [The maintenance man next to them is electricuted and falls off the ladder. Tracy and Captain Reese rush to him.] R: Get the paramedics in here! T: You're gonna be alright. Just don't move. [At his desk, Nick starts to shake uncontrollably.] [Nick's loft: Nick walks out of the lift. He staggers over to the regriderator and takes out a bottle of blood and starts to drink it. Suddenly, he begins to hear screams and cries. He looks around. The strings of the piano have been ripped out of the framework. The bottle falls from his hands and shatters. [He starts to pace around Sancho.] S: It is not for me to question. LC: Of course not. For once the question is asked, it must be answered. S: God is in all of us. Even you, though you serve the Devil! LC: [turning abruptly to face him] I...SERVE...NO ONE! S: Then you are without purpose! LC: Perhaps, but at least I do not decieve myself. [Nick moves to stand behind Sancho.] S: [frightened] Please. N: You have nothing to fear from me. S: You who can not walk in the daylight? The lamb's blood and crosses repell you? Tell me you are not an angel of the Devil. LC: Yes, Nicholas. Do tell. [The inquisitor walks in with his guards.] I: [pointing to Sancho] Es la hora. [It is time.] LC: Enjoy. LC: My thoughts on the matter are irrelevant. I'm mearly indulging Nicholas. M: Look. Whether we speak literally or figuratively, God and the Devil reside in each of us. M: Yes. Of course you did. LC: [Holding up a finger hypnotically.] This never happened. [He turns and leaves. Vanderwal wanders over and stares at the cross.] COMMERCIAL [Nick's loft: Natalie walks in. Nick is leaning on a post, drinking from a bottle in his hand. The lights are dim.] NA: Nick? I, ah, was just on my way to the office. You booked off, right? Look, I can stay with you if you want. N: No. NA: No trouble, really. I... I could just... N: I'm fine. NA: It's over, Nick. Hey. You beat the Devil. Not bad for a day's work. N: You can't imagine what it's like. NA: Maybe not, but we all have our demons. N: Not like this. [He turns towards her. His eyes are glowing yellow-green and he puts his hands on her cheek.] NA: Don't... don't do that. N: It's alright. Don't be afraid. [He turns away from her.] I think that what happened set me back a bit--set us back a bit. I don't know how much, but I haven't felt such a need for human blood in a long time. [He takes a drink out of the bottle.] [Broadcast booth: LaCroix as the Nightcrawler.] LC: In courts and palaces he also reigns. In the luxourious cities where the noise of riot ascends above their loftiest towers; And injury; And outrage. And when night darkens the street, then wander forth, the sons of Belial, flown with insolence and wine. Paradise, Lost. END CREDIT
